managing director s review Hans Sundqvist Managing Director s review Dear Partner, In your hand, you are holding a copy of our brand new communications channel. I hope you enjoy it. I began working as Managing Director of Turku Repair Yard on 1st June 2008 after the previous incumbent retired. I have been working in the marine industry for more than 30 years, not only in ship repairs, but I consider our trump card to be our also in the service of a shipping company ability to adapt to tight schedules and a classification we have good reason to be society. My curproud of this fact. rent job is a good combination of my previous positions; I understand the pressures that the customers are facing. Moreover close co-operation with customers is something I enjoy. One of my most important roles as Managing Director is to create resources for Project Managers and Supervisors, so that they can successfully implement customer projects. I am also very proud of their professional skills - what my people promise to the customers, they deliver. For liners and passenger vessels in particular of which our customers own many - trouble-free and prompt repair is of vital importance. I see the future as being a challenge for the whole marine industry. Competition will increase, hence we will be busy safeguarding our continuous development. Although the majority of our order book comprises annual repair work, our yard must be able to rapidly respond to customer needs should an average occur, for example. With an eye on the future, I see our joining the BLRT Group as an advantage; we have access to a flexible, skilled work force for our customer projects, whatever the situation or the time. Over the years, Turku Repair Yard and its staff has become familiar to me as a competitor, employer, and customer, so I know that I am getting involved with a professional and motivated team. It is my pleasure to work with people whose word I can trust. I consider our trump card to be our ability to adapt to tight schedules we have good reason to be proud of this fact. Now and in the future. Welcome onboard!

TURKU REPAI R YARD One of the biggest in Northern Europe one of the most flexible on the market Big and flexible Finland has a long tradition in shipbuilding and repairs. Turku Repair Yard Ltd., established in 1989, proudly continues this long tradition in the biggest dry dock in the Baltic. Our dock 265 x 70 metres accomodates ships up to Aframax size, but vessels of any size are welcome at our yard. Our team is skilled in repairs, maintenance and conversions of big as well as small vessels. Our yard is ready to meet the needs of our customers all year round. The weather does not affect our performance. In Finland we are prepared for all possible weather conditions. Our quality is consistently high, and we stick to our schedules come rain or shine. We are praised for our flexibility in even the most demanding repairs, conversion projects and maintenance. Our yard employs about 100 people and an additionally up to 300 in our local partner companies. With our two yards in Finland, our voyage repair team and local partners, we can offer flexible service to all our customers.

H ELSI N KI REPAI R YARD HELSINKI REPAIR YARD Helsinki Repair Yard owned by Turku Repair Yard Ltd, is the only dry dock in Finland east of Hanko. The yard s location is significant in terms of traffic flow. In addition to repairing and maintaining naval and coast guard vessels, the Helsinki yard also deals with the ferries that sail the local waters, local tugs, and vessels based in the waters of Lake Saimaa. If necessary, the yard s personnel also carry out harbour and voyage repairs. The solid co-operation between the Naantali and Helsinki yards of Turku Repair Yard Ltd is flexible in relation to both machinery and personnel should unforeseen situations arise. In all projects, the long experience of the staff in ship repair is of great value; skilled workers can be found for every project and, when needed, the personnel resources of Turku Repair Yard are also at the company s disposal. Key measurements: Dry dock: 120 x 20 m, 5.8 m Erkki Miettinen Helsinki Repair Yard Ltd. Erkki works as Managing Director of Helsinki Repair Yard and is responsible for coordinating all the projects for the yard. His career, which began in the 1970s at the Kotka shipyard, has taught him that an overall picture of a project can easily be created, and the best workers can be sourced for any project. Helsinki Repair Yard is the only dry dock east of Hanko before Tallinn and the Russian yards, so there is a clear demand for this yard, says Erkki. In addition to safeguarding our own general service readiness, such as in the fields of the Navy, the Border Guard, and the Coast Defence, our location is strategically significant when considering benefits to the environment, for example in the case of an average.

TURKU REPAI R YARD Ismo Rantanen Project Manager Ismo is responsible for carrying out major projects at Turku Repair Yard. He began his career as an apprentice at a shipyard in Stockholm, and has been involved in ship repair since 1973. His career at Turku Repair Yard began soon after the yard was established in 1989. Because modern vessels are being docked less frequently than before, the routines associated with docking are not always as familiar to customers as they used to be. Therefore, the expertise and quality of a repair yard is more important for the customer than ever, says Ismo. Something that may seem exotic for the customer can be an everyday routine for us.

MAI NTENANC E

MAI NTENANC E Turku Repair Yard carries out annual maintenance and demanding construction work on ships, such as vessel lengthening and other service and repair work. Of these, the most common are service and repairs on large propulsion systems and engines. The continual development of propulsion and engine systems requires the continual training of personnel. This training and our specialisation in the maintenance and repair of systems enable us to offer our customers the best expertise in the business. Furthermore, the company s machinery and the area s infrastructure provide the best opportunities for handling large propulsions systems and engines. The yard s shaft hauling apparatus and hoisting equipment enable the safe and efficient removal and installation of propellers and propeller shafts for even the heaviest icebreakers and tankers. In addition to the necessary training, our personnel also have decades of experience in the performance of demanding maintenance and service work on such items as the variable-pitch propellers of different suppliers.

TURKU REPAI R YARD 10

PROJ ECT TEAM Oskari Kosonen Project Manager Teppo Reilimo Project Manager Oskari is the newest member of the team at Turku Repair Yard, having begun his work with us in 2007. However, he has already had close contact with the field of shipbuilding, as, prior to coming to the yard, he worked on building new vessels. Oskari s areas of responsibility are chiefly naval vessels such as minelayers, and repair projects for oil-combating vessels. The ships are in our dock for one to two weeks, so the pace of work and the variations in jobs really make our work interesting. What s more, we have really great customers with whom it s easy to co-operate, says Oskari. He mentions the importance of language skills as an added bonus: It s nice to do business in different languages. Teppo has been working at Turku Repair Yard in different roles since the early 1990s. As a Project Manager, Teppo is responsible not only for the repairs to a customer s ship, but also for creating the framework for projects with a representative of the customer. Together with an inspector, he will go through the different work stages, decide what must be done and when, and set deadlines. Although surprising situations may arise during a project, such as the expansion of the project, it must be possible to complete jobs within the promised timetable. What is promised must be fulfilled. 11

SURFACE TREATMENT Surface treatment specialist LTT-Tekniikka Oy, owned by Turku Repair Yard, specialises in the surface treatment of ships and industrial targets. The work covers the planning of surface treatment, washing of the target object, surface treatment, and reporting. This company has long experience in ship repair work, in which deadlines and conditions change rapidly. This is why service flexibility plays a key role. Work carried out by LTT-Tekniikka is both cosmetic: such as painting above the surface of the water, and obligatory: surface treatment of parts beneath the water, the aim of which is to reduce fuel consumption and increase the life expectancy of the vessel. 12

SURFACE TREATMENT Ari Soini LTT-Tekniikka Ari Soini has been involved in the shipyard business since 1983, and has been Managing Director of LTT since 1994. He describes LTT s trump card as its skilled and flexible work force and highly competent work supervision. The same guys have been doing this work for us for years now - they know what standards we must meet, and the experience of ship repair that they ve gained over the years has put them in a class of their own, even on a national scale, says Ari. The work of LTT-Tekniikka often produces considerable added value for customers, or, in the best cases, for the customers customers, as in the case of painting luxury cruise liners. Fortunately the value placed on surface treatment is growing all the time, and nowadays customers understand that a skilled inspector must be tasked with checking surface treatment, as is the case with other kinds of repair work. 13

PROJ ECT TEAM 14 Erkki Mikkola Project Manager Erkki began his career at Turku Repair Yard in 1990, and before that he worked for 10 years on fitting out new-build vessels. What I learned in fitting out was beneficial to my current work in the sense that it helped in the perception of a vessel as a whole, Erkki says. I see co-operation with the customer as an essential part of repair work. As far as possible, we go through the work on board a ship with the ship s captain, chief engineer, and foremen before the ship is docked. That way we can be sure we are talking about the same things. These days the crews on board ships are so professional that it s a pleasure to do business with them. Although many things are also handled electronically, there s still nothing better than personal contact, Erkki admits.

PROJ ECT TEAM Göran Fleege Project Manager/Estimations Göran s job description includes calculating offers and marketing. He has been working for Turku Repair Yard for 18 years, so he has become very familiar with the different requirements of customers. In offer calculations, the most important thing is to genuinely identify the customer s needs and build an offer based on them that will withstand anything thrown at it. According to Göran, the most important things for customers of ship repair are costs and delivery time. If a customer s ship happens to be in the vicinity of our yard, we can usually make an offer that is difficult for the customer to refuse, Göran says with a laugh. Anatoly Antti Gruba Project Manager Anatoly has been working at Turku Repair Yard since 2007, and his tasks mainly entail looking after projects with the yard s Russian-speaking customers. He is proud of the reputation attached to his job: This yard has a really good reputation in the marine industry, and so it s a pleasure to work here. We keep our promises to our customers, and that s what our good reputation is based on. The resources of the yard, such as the way Aframax vessels can be accommodated in the dock, have greatly impressed Anatoly. In the future, we will definitely attract many new Russian customers, because this yard can offer facilities that don t exist anywhere else in the Baltic states or Russia. 15

A GREEN ER TOMORROW We make it greener. Every day. Quality and environmental care are matters to which Turku Repair Yard pays great attention. The quality of our operations is ensured by our skilled work force and our ISO 9001 quality management system. AQAP 2120 certification the NATO quality management system used by the Finnish Defence Forces is being certified in a near future. 16

A GR EEN ER TOMOR ROW QUALITY AND THE ENVIRONMENT The state of the Baltic Sea and its protection are matters close to all our hearts. In Finland, Turku Repair Yard is taking part in the Baltic Sea Challenge organised by the cities of Helsinki and Turku, by supporting the Archipelago Sea Protection Fund. ISO 14001 environmental management system was certified in 2005. We have paid particular attention to sorting our waste and introducing environmentally friendly procedures and methods. In 2007, more than 90% of our waste oil went for recycling and, for other types of waste, the corresponding figure was more than 65%. In addition, in the painting and cleaning activities of LTT-Tekniikka, we have made sizeable investments to be more environmentally friendly. 17

VOYAGE REPAI R Our voyage repair team operates 24 hours a day The Show must go on! Things happen. Sometimes you run into problems that are not particularly serious but need attending to before they become unmanageable. Or maybe the nature of the problem is not all that clear. Small repairs can turn into big bills if you ignore these problems or have to dock the ship to fix them. Fortunately there is an easy solution to minor ship repairs. Turku Repair Yard Ltd conducts voyage repairs in the Baltic area. Our mobile teams consist of professionals, highly experienced in vessel repairing and checking. The typical repairs that we do are small jobs that take only a couple of hours. If the damage is severe or cannot be fixed on location, the team can make the necessary repairs so that the vessel can safely be transported to one of our docks for a thorough check. 18

VOYAGE REPAI R Toni Lindström Site Manager Toni s area of responsibility is the voyage repair team. This team is available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, and handles as many as 140 projects a year, so Toni knows how the best workers for each project can be quickly assembled. The most It s a pleasure to work with guys who typical jobs for the team are steel and understand what rapid-response pipe work, engine and 24-hour-a-day service hydraulics, but also really means to the customer cleaning, painting and even decorating are done. Toni considers the strongpoint of the team to be the impressive professional and language skills of the members, who make it a point of honour to complete a project based on a short deadline. It s a pleasure to work with guys who understand what rapid-response 24-hour-a-day service really means to the customer. Authorized service provider in Finland 19
