28 TH ANNUAL OREGON FIRE APPARATUS & EQUIPMENT MECHANICS SCHOOL ATTENTION: MARCH 10-14th, 2008 APPARATUS SUPERVISORS SHOP SUPERINTENDANTS FLEET MANAGERS AMBULANCE TECHNICIANS FIRE APPARATUS TECHNICIANS FIRE APPARATUS ENGINEERS FIRE FIGHTERS The annual Oregon Fire Apparatus & Equipment Mechanics Association annual mechanics school is here again. The School is being held at the Marion County Regional Training Facility, 4910 Brooklake Rd. N.E. Salem, Ore. 97305, (take exit 263 on I-5, and go east one mile, and the training center will be on the right), Class study materials, lunches, and refreshments will be provided. **Students do not have to be a member of O.F.A.E.M.A. to attend Classes.** ALL CLASSES AND REGISTRATION WILL BE ON OUR WEBSITE, WWW.OFAEMA.ORG Each year the Oregon Fire Apparatus and Equipment Mechanics Association awards the Gerald Nordlund Memorial Scholarship, which is a full scholarship for one person, it includes lodging, meals, and all week attendance to the school. H&W Emergency Vehicles is sponsoring a $500 tuition only scholarship again this year. The only criteria for this, is that the scholarship applicant must be in good standing with a paid or volunteer fire department, and must be involved with the maintenance and operation of emergency apparatus and equipment. Applications will be available at www.ofaema.org. For students needing overnight accommodations, we have a block of rooms at a special discount rate at the Phoenix Inn North, at the Market street exit on I-5 in Salem, Oregon. Room rates will be $75 +tax; to get this rate you must call 1-888-239-9593 and tell them you are with the Oregon Fire Mechanics School. The reservation deadline to receive this rate is February 9, 2008. Continental Breakfast included with rooms. Students are welcome to visit the Hospitality room at the Phoenix Inn, room 101, starting Sunday evening the 9 th, and every night after classes for networking with other technicians and the instructors. Refreshments and snacks are being provided by Wilson-Heirgood Associates Insurance Company. The Vendor show this year will be on Thursday, the 13 th, from noon until 4:00 p.m. at the school location. We invite you to come and see what s new and meet with your equipment dealers. The Vendor Show is free & open to anyone to attend, food and drinks will be provided, along with door prizes throughout the show. The Annual Membership Meeting & Banquet will be held on Thursday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Phoenix Room, at the Phoenix Inn North. Dinner will be served at 6:30, with Busters Barbeque providing the dinner. Students and guests are welcome; cost will be $20.00 per person. Due to requirements by the caterer, there will be a very limited number of banquet tickets available at the door, so please order your dinner tickets early. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the evening.

We are also providing an Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification testing program. Students wishing to take the EVT exams on Friday morning or Saturday morning must be pre-registered with the EVT Certification Commission. Students may now log-on to www.evtcc.org to download registration forms, reference material lists and learning objectives. If you don t have Internet access, you can call O.F.A.E.M.A. at 503-369-2053 to get your EVT exam registration form or Info. EVTCC Special Test site #31008. Students need to be registered with EVTCC by February 22nd, 2008. Class Information and Registration available on line at www.ofaema.org. Registration will be handled on a first come, first served basis. CLASS DESCRIPTIONS Heavy Duty Electrical: ( 2 days, Monday-Tuesday) 8:00-5:00 F4 & E2 prep. Class on basic electricity including electrical theory, battery theory, meters, wire and cables, alternators and cranking motors, advanced electricity, the application of the above theories plus troubleshooting of entire systems. The class covers the basic design and performance requirements of the fire and ambulance electrical systems, components of electrical systems and preventive maintenance and troubleshooting activities. The technician will understand the use of diagnostic equipment, batteries, the construction and operation of starting systems, charging systems and components, and the accepted practices used to diagnose and repair electrical systems. Instructor; Mike Santilli, Firehouse Electrical Services LLC. Mobile Equipment Hydraulic Systems: (3.5 days, Monday-Thursday) 8:00-5:00 F-8 prep. This class is a review of basic open & closed center mobile hydraulic systems. Will cover orientate component identification, reading schematics, and troubleshooting techniques. Work book provided. One day of hands on with hydraulics trainer board at Linn Benton College. EQUIPMENT REQUIRED: Recommend that students purchase Mobile hydraulics CD, and Certification CD for study, both are available for $50.00 each at www.fluidforce.net. Instructor:GeorgeLonner; Fluid Power Training&Associates. Apparatus Design & Performance: (1 day, Monday) 8:00-5:00 F2 prep. This Class covers the standards for fire apparatus as described in NFPA 1901, Standard for Automotive Fire Apparatus, and in NFPA 1911, Standard for the Inspection, Maintenance, Testing, and Retirement of In-Service Automotive Fire Apparatus. Study Material: NFPA 1901, Standard for Automotive Fire Apparatus, 2003 edition, chapters 1-25 & Appendix. NFPA 1911, Standard for the inspection, Maintenance, Testing & Retirement of In-service Automotive Fire Apparatus 2007 edition. IFSTA, Pumping Apparatus DRIVER/OPERATOR Handbook, chapters 3,4,6,10,11,16, Glossary & Appendix.A Instructor: Jack McCann, Jack is retired Battalion chief from Corvalis Fire Dept. he was responsible for maintenance and purchasing, and is now a Dealer for HME Ahrens-Fox. Detroit Diesel 60 Series: (3 days, Monday-Wednesday) 8:00-5:00 This class will cover the new emission standards enacted in 2007, and maintenance requirements, and engine electronics EQUIPMENT REQUIRED: Instructor: George Paradis, Pacific Power Products.

Fire Pumps & Accessories: (1 day, Tuesday) 8:00-5:00 F3 prep. This class covers the general design, performance, maintenance, service and testing standards for pumper apparatus. Study materials: NFPA, 1901 Standard for Automotive Fire Apparatus, 2003 edition: NFPA 1911 Standard for the Inspection, Maintenance, Testing, and Retirement of In-Service Automotive Fire Apparatus, 2007 edition: IFSTA, Pumping Apparatus Driver/Operator Handbook, second edition, 2006. Fire Department Pumping Apparatus Maintenance, by Don Henry. (8:00-5:00) Instructor: Dan Wehrman, Dan is a Lieutenant with Corvallis Fire Dept. and teaches pump operator classes for Linn- Benton Community College. Darley Pumps & Accessories: (2 days, Wednesday-Thursday) 8:00-5:00 Class will consist of pump theory, pump accessories (relief valve, primer, etc.), Major repair, & troubleshooting, on Darley Pumps. Class will consist of classroom and hands on Pump repair on a Darley training pump. Instuctor: Larry J. Normand, Sales Application Engineer, W.S. Darley & Company. NFPA 1911 Update : (1/2 day, Tuesday) 8:00-12:00 Class will cover the new NFPA 1911, This standard defines the minimum requirements for establishing an inspection, maintenance, and testing program for in-service fire apparatus. 1.1.2 This standard includes guidelines for fire apparatus refurbishment and retirement. 1.1.3 This standard identifies the systems and items on a fire apparatus that are to be inspected and maintained, the frequency of such inspections and maintenance, and the requirements and procedures for conducting performance tests on components. 1.1.4 This standard provides sample forms for collecting inspection and test data. Instructor: Jim Johannessen & Mike Chiburis, Field Specialist III, Underwriters Laboratories Ground Ladder Testing: (1/2 day, Wednesday) 1:00-5:00 Class covers the requirements for the use, maintenance, inspection, and service testing of in-service fire department ground ladders to ensure reasonable safety for fire fighters and victims climbing on those ground ladders. The Standard applies to all fire department ground ladders used by fire departments for rescue, fire fighting operations, and training. It provides the means to determine if in-service ground ladders meet the standard for continued service. Instructor: Jim Johannessen & Mike Chiburis, Field Specialist III, Underwriters Laboratories O.H.D. Ambulance Requirements & Stretcher Maintenance: (1/2 day, Thursday ) 8:00-12:00 Class will cover the Oregon Health Department requirements for Ambulances and EMS Equipment, And Stretcher and Equipment Maintenance Instructor: Elizibeth Morgan, Prehospital Standards Rep. OCHHP, Ems & Trauma System & Russ Walls, Firemed Northwest. Elkhart Valves and Nozzles: (1/2 day, Thursday) 8:00-12:00 Class will cover Elkhart Nozzles, Valves, & Appliances Instructor: Brian Scott, Elkhart Brass Apparatus Pump Testing: ( 1 day, Friday) 8:00-5:00 This Class follows the NFPA 1911 Standards for Service Tests on Fire Department Apparatus. A Handson Pump test will be conducted in the afternoon. Study materials: NFPA 1911, Standard for Service Tests for Pumps on Fire Dept. Apparatus, 2002 edition, provided.????

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED: gloves and helmet for actual test. Instructor: Don Gleason, Master Level III Technician, Eugene Fire & EMS Allison Transmission: ( 1 day, Friday) 8:00-5:00 F6 prep. This Allison Program will be geared to prepare participants to take the EVT F6 Test. Transmission types covered: MT600 series, HT700 series, 3000 and 4000 series. The Allison EVT F6 action packed day will cover the following objective areas; Operating Principles, Preventative Maintenance Support, Troubleshooting Procedures, Electronic Controls, Output Retarder, and Reference Material. Please note that you need to come prepared for the test and utilize this program to enhance your understanding of the objective areas. Instructor: Al Conkle, W.W. Williams Detroit Diesel, & Ohio Association of Emergency Vehicle Technicians. Stihl Saws: ( 1/2 day, Friday) 8:00-12:00 Class will cover chainsaw safety & maintenance, engine theory, and hands on demonstration of field maintenance procedures. Class will break into groups to allow attendees to perform common maintenance that should happen after each use. This includes air filter, fuel filter maintenance, cooling and drive system maintenance, minor repairs starter rope, fuel filter, etc. Instructor: J.D. Small Engine Maintenance & Repairs; (1/2 day, Friday) 1:00-4:00 Class will cover small engine maintenance, repairs & troubleshooting of all major engine brands, gas & diesel.
