CIFS NetApp Migration Quick Start Guide using PeerSync Prerequisites This is a step-by-step configuration guide for CIFS NetApp migration (from 7-Mode to Clustered Data ONTAP) using PeerSync. In order for FPolicy real-time event detection to work with a 7-Mode NetApp source, please follow the list or pre-requisites outlined in this document prior to configuring a Migration Job within PeerSync: http://www.peersoftware.com/resources/tech-briefs.html?task=document.viewdoc&id=57 Install PeerSync Download the latest PeerSync version available from the link provided in your Trial or Registration email. A trial request may also be submitted from the following link: http://www.peersoftware.com/trial-software.html Run the installation file that was provided in your Trial or Registration email. No reboot is required if prompted. When completed, launch the PeerSync Profiler. Copy (Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) the license information into the Registration screen (Help menu > Register PeerSync). Create new PeerSync Job(s). Configure a NetApp Migration Job 1. Start the PeerSync Profiler (PSProfiler.exe). 2. Click Add New Job to define a unique set of source and target folder pairs and settings. 3. Enter the Source and Target paths for the Job on the Folder Selection screen. Optionally, use Job Data Import to dynamically create Jobs based on pre-defined Source and Target locations. To do this, create a source.txt file containing a list of all the source folders or shares you wish to migrate. Then create a target.txt file for the target folders or shares. Add these files to the Source and Target fields in the PeerSync Profile (see screenshot below). Copyright 2013 Peer Software, Inc. All rights reserved. P. 1
4. Click on the Configure button located below the Source Folder selection field and select NetApp FPolicy from the Detection Method for Real-time Monitoring list to enable NetApp 7-Mode real-time detection. Copyright 2013 Peer Software, Inc. All rights reserved. P. 2
5. Check Use real-time monitoring in the Automation screen to enable real-time detection. 6. Check Use Enhanced Scanning in the Automation screen and set the depth level to Level 3 to boost scan performance while not overwhelming the CPU of the Windows server. 7. Check Replicate Delete unmatched files to make sure PeerSync deletes files from the target that are deleted from the source. If enabled, adjust the location of the PSDeletions folder and enable the deletion folder auto-cleanup cycle if desired. 8. (Optional) Tweak the Read/Write Buffer Size in the Performance screen that is used to read and write files. Increasing this setting may help increase transfer speeds for larger files. 9. (Optional) Enable Use block/byte level synchronization in the ByteReplicator screen to send byte-level changes from the source to the target machine without sending the whole file. Use this option for migrations over the WAN only. It is faster in a LAN environment to copy the whole file. This step requires the installation of the PSListener service on a Windows server as a relay between PeerSync and the target NetApp filer. Follow the instructions on this page to setup the PSListener for byte-level replication with a NetApp target: http://www.peersoftware.com/resources/tech-briefs.html?task=document.viewdoc&id=77 10. (Optional) Enable Transfer NT security descriptors (ACLs) in the Miscellaneous screen to replicate Owner, Group, SACL, and SACL folder and file settings in real-time or during scans. Care must be exercised when propagating security descriptors to avoid rendering files inaccessible on the target, especially if the source and target reside on different Active Directory domains. 11. (Optional) Add files and/or folders you wish exclude from the migration process in the Exceptions screen. 12. (Optional) Enable email reporting by checking the Create administrative email messages option in the Email Reporting screen. Click on the Email Configuration button to set your SMTP settings. Click on the Advanced Settings button to set email notifications based on errors/alerts or when the scan completes. Copyright 2013 Peer Software, Inc. All rights reserved. P. 6
13. (Optional) Tune the Job Threads and Copy Threads in the Options/Commands screen to define the maximum number of simultaneous file transfers allowed to be performed in real-time (Copy Threads) or during scans (Job Threads). 14. Enable Install as an NT Service in the PeerSync Startup/Service screen to run PeerSync as a service and ensure the Job is automatically re-initiated during a server reboot. Be sure PeerSync runs under a domain user account that has Read + Write access to the source and target data sets. Follow the NetApp Prerequisites guideline for more information. 15. Save the Profile when the configuration is complete and start the Job by clicking on the Start Service or Launch Current Profile button located on the Run/View PeerSync screen or Tool Buttons menu bar. 16. Click on the Show Advanced Display link on the Run/View screen to see all the dynamically created Jobs and related statistical information. Copyright 2013 Peer Software, Inc. All rights reserved. 17. When you are ready to cut-over to the new target server, check the Failed Events tab for any files that could not be synchronized and click the Reprocess Failed Events button (after resolving any issues which caused the original failed event) to manually re-attempt the synchronization of those files without having to perform a scan.
