The In2Uni Program significantly contributes to the University of Wollongong s commitment to widening participation to higher education for students from diverse backgrounds. 214 has seen a significant commitment to the University of Wollongong s regional communities with Outreach Officers being employed in Batemans Bay, Bega, Shoalhaven and Southern Highlands to provide contextualised outreach and support to local school students. Increased investment has also been placed into Year 12 students from our local schools in 214, with the launch of the Summer Master Classes and University Preparation Program to provide students with tangible pathways to higher education. The results from our Year 12 students in 214 have exceeded expectations, with 93% of students who completed the Year 12 University Preparation Program receiving university admission offers. The involvement of current university students, who have attended our local schools as In2Uni Mentors, has significantly increased over the last four years. The journeys shared by these mentors, together with their enthusiasm and passion for working with local school students are transforming the lives of students in our local community. The partnerships that have been developed through the In2Uni Program with local schools and education authorities and the richness that students from our local schools bring to our university environment is invaluable to the University of Wollongong. I would like to personally thank all of the schools, principals, teachers and parents for working so closely with us in 214. We look forward to continuing our partnerships with you in 215. Connecting with individuals and communities to foster a culture of lifelong learning through aspiration, access, transition and support programs. WHAT IS IN2UNI? In2Uni is a partnership between the University of Wollongong, Department of Education & Communities (DEC NSW) and the Catholic Education Office (CEO) Wollongong and Goulburn/Canberra that engages with individuals in targeted schools and communities to build their awareness and aspirations toward higher education and to provide them with the knowledge and skills to get there. At the University of Wollongong, we understand that the journey to what you want to be when you grow up can take individuals in many directions. That s why our programs start working with students early, in year one, and continues to support individuals through high school, vocational pathways and to ensure their successful journey to higher education. Our focus is on lifelong learning and engagement with education, whilst providing tangible outcomes for individuals. That s why we not only offer individuals with university preparation programs, but also vocational pathways to encourage them to remain connected with education. WHY IN2UNI? The In2Uni Program is funded by the Australian Federal Government s Higher Education Participation Program (HEPP). In2Uni will support the Government s objective of ensuring that Australians from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the ability to study at university get the opportunity to do so and succeed. This is part of a comprehensive reform of higher education that is designed to make sure that all Australian s have access to a higher education system that is amongst the best in the world, is high quality, fair and sustainable. UOW S STRATEGIC PLAN 213-218 UOW s In2Uni Program aims to meet the objectives of UOW s Strategic Plan in the following areas: 3.1: Promote high quality regional partnerships as an integrated educational outreach strategy involving our Faculties and regional campuses 3.2: Embed our framework for Social Inclusion, aligned with clear student targets and support mechanisms, including our Indigenous education strategy 3.3: Play an active role in advancing and championing social, cultural, environmental and economic developments in our regional communities DEC S STRATEGIC PLAN 212 217 The University of Wollongong and the Department of Education and Communities have high level strategic agreements to ensure the successful delivery of the In2Uni Program in their schools. UOW s In2Uni Program is guided by the Department of Education & Communities Strategic Plan in the following areas: Increase the numbers of students eligible for university entrance Increase in achievement at all levels of education and training, including completion of higher level qualifications Increase the proportion of tertiary education students from underrepresented groups e.g. Aboriginal students, students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and rural and remote students. STUDENT & MENTOR EXPERIENCES IN2UNI UNIVERSITY PREPARATION PROGRAM STUDENT 214 HECATE JERRETT CORRIMAL HIGH SCHOOL Successful entry into a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Visual Arts & Design) and Creative Arts (Creative Writing) I never really considered going on to university but art has always been a passion of mine. My high school experience was not the best, I didn t really enjoy school. My involvement with UPP was great, it is a really helpful program. The experience has definitely helped me prepare for university. I believe I did well in my exams because of it (UPP). Without the program I probably never would have gained an interview. I am already recommending the program to other students! I m now going to uni to follow my life s passion - art. IN2UNI SUMMER MASTER CLASS STUDENT 213 ANGELI JAMMAL WARRAWONG HIGH SCHOOL In2Uni Mentor 214 Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Law University of Wollongong University has always been my main goal, it was heavily encouraged and both discouraged at the same time. I think the In2Uni Summer Master Class really was the big turning point for me. Just being on campus triggered the notion of how badly I did want to end up here and the constant reassurance from the program that I could make it. I wanted to make my family proud, and proving to everyone that told me I couldn t do it that they were wrong, was worth it! I am sure I wouldn t be here having completed my first year of law school without it. As this was a life changing opportunity for me, I decided to apply for a position with such a great and motivated team as I wanted to help students just like me realise how great they are and that they can achieve anything through encouraging them and tutoring them the way I was, by the brilliant In2Uni mentors. KEY STATISTICS 31 In2Uni Scholarships were awarded in 214 (11 in 212 and 18 in 213) $43, was raised throughout the year to put towards In2Uni scholarships in 215. 352 students from In2Uni high schools were successful at gaining entry to UOW at the time that Main Round Offers were released. During the Transition Calling Campaign, 294 of the 352 were successfully contacted, resulting in an 83.5% call success rate. In 214, 157 students were supported on their pathway to university PATHWAYS, TRANSITION & SUPPORT FOR IN2UNI STUDENTS The In2Uni Program is focused on lifelong learning and engagement with education, whilst providing tangible outcomes for individuals. In 214, In2Uni offered individuals with both transition and support initiatives to ensure a successful transition to UOW, also vocational pathways to encourage students who weren t successful in gaining an offer to UOW to remain on a pathway to higher education. IN2UNI SCHOLARSHIPS The In2Uni Scholarship has been established since 211 as a means to provide a tangible connection and support for the successful transition of students who have attended In2Uni Schools into tertiary education. The In2Uni scholarships are to the value of $1 for students in their first year of an undergraduate degree at the University of Wollongong. Funds for the In2Uni Scholarships are contributed by private donors, UOW Faculties and funds were also raised through events run by COMM39 Interns and In2Uni Mentors. If you would like to assist UOW students by making a donation please contact the In2Uni Outreach and Pathways Manager at in2uni@uow.edu.au TRANSITION CALLING CAMPAIGN The Low SES Outreach & Mentoring Phone Campaign was designed to target students from In2Uni high schools and provide them with a first point of contact once the UAC offers have been released. The call centre was staffed by In2Uni Mentors who attended In2Uni high schools and had developed a mentoring relationship with the students. The call centre operated after business hours and provided advice on UAC offers and acceptance, alternative entry pathways, In2Uni scholarships, transition advice and employment opportunities including In2Uni mentor recruitment. SUPPORTED PATHWAYS TO HIGHER EDUCATION In 214, UOW launched its supported pathways to higher education program. In2Uni school students who were not successful in gaining entry into UOW this year, were offered a supported pathway to their degree to keep them on track to achieve their career goals. Students were provided with a sponsored place into a Certificate IV or Diploma program, participated in a bridging and transition program and received career and admission advice. 1 : IN2UNI ANNUAL REPORT 214

YEAR 1 UNIQUE EXPERIENCE DAY In2Uni, Woolyungah Indigenous Centre & AIME worked together to deliver an onsite experience day for Year 1 students from low socioeconomic and indigenous backgrounds. Students from In2Uni Schools took part in faculty taster sessions; alumni experience talks; information sessions and study skills sessions about transition into their senior studies and university. OTHER PARTNERSHIPS The In2Uni Program also partners with the following organisations to increase opportunities with local students: Smith Family Supporting the Tertiary Induction Program to ensure that students from equity backgrounds have a successful transition to higher education. Early Start Working with students in the early years of primary school and early childhood centres to deliver outreach programs to increase aspirations towards higher education. St. George Illawarra Dragons Working with primary schools to develop their understanding about the relationship between sport and education. Youth off The Streets Working with Year 9 & 1 students through the delivery of school based workshops and university visits to increase aspirations towards higher education and re-engagement with education. AIME Careers Interviews Working with AIME s Year 12 students to identify career paths and provide them with tangible opportunities to engage in higher education. FUTURE DIRECTIONS In 215, the key priorities for the In2Uni Program are to: 1. Increase the representation of students from rural/remote, low SES and Indigenous backgrounds at UOW campuses to meet UOW and Government targets 2. Build on and foster existing external partnerships with the Department of Education, Catholic Education, UOW College, TAFE NSW, government agencies, schools and private registered training organisations to develop and deliver programs that build capacity and provide tangible opportunities for individuals from diverse backgrounds 3. Increase the number of primary and high schools participating in the In2Uni Program 4. Launching the Summer Master Classes across all five Faculties at the University of Wollongong 5. Increase the number of students participating in Year 12 University Preparation Program 6. IN2UNI - MY WAY WEBSITE The In2Uni - My Way Website has been developed to engage with a broad audience that encourages individuals from diverse backgrounds to aspire to higher education. The website acknowledges that individuals take different pathways to university, whether that is directly from school or taking advantage of alternative entry pathways such as TAFE, UOW College etc. The In2Uni - My Way website is an interactive website to allow engagement from individuals from diverse backgrounds through: 1. An online resource portal for school teachers that includes Australian NSW Board of Studies curriculum linked modules and activities for teachers to utilise in their classrooms. The online resource portal also encourages interaction from teachers from different schools in implementing these modules and activities within their classrooms 2. An e-mentoring portal for Year 12 students to assist them with their HSC studies and to make the transition to university studies 3.
