Bachelor of Health Sciences ABOUT THE PROGRAMME DURING THE PROGRAMME CORE CURRICULUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Our programme trains and develops professionals (apart from physicians) who want to establish careers in health promotion, administration and para-clinical services. Graduates may occupy roles in the management of healthcare facilities or may use science and technology that aids in diagnosis, education, forensics and treatment of persons. While at the UWI Cave Hill Campus, you will learn through a combination of lectures, tutorials, and laboratory sessions over a 3 year period to achieve 96 credits of courses. The programme has a strong biomedical core of courses and is infused with interdisciplinary courses inclusive of research experiences, which enable concentrations based on your particular interests. Structure & Function (Cells, Tissues, Organ Systems) Human Development & Behaviour Fundamentals of Human Nutrition Essential Patho-physiology Biological Principles of Treatment & Prevention Health Care Systems Health Science Research Admission is based on the following criteria : t 5 CSEC subjects/ GCE O level Mathematics, English Language, Biology, Chemistry & Physics t 3 CAPE/ GCE A Level Biology & Chemistry and a non science subject t Associate degree and certificates from other health science programmes will be also be assessed for entry. Exemptions with credits may be granted.
Community Health This is a discipline of Public Health, which focuses on the study and improvement of the health characteristics of biological communities. You will learn about concepts of health in the geographical setting, with emphasis on the social, psychological, physical, mental, environmental and ethical components of health among inhabitants of communities. After the programme Bachelor of Health Sciences graduates who specialize in Community Health may move on to careers including health promotion, research and also careers addressing health policy implementation in government ministries. These individuals can also specialize at the graduate level in Public Health.
UWI UWI CAVE CAVE HILL HILL CAMPUS CAMPUS Biomedicine, Ethics, Humanities & Society The concentration introduces students to the ethical and philosophical views of health in today s society. It starts with a foundation in understanding the history of biomedicine in our society and the ethical issues that can arise in biomedical settings. You will also have the opportunity to reflect on how societal developments have led to specific kinds of ethical concerns, and how different groups in society have been, and continue to be, affected by differential treatment in science and medicine. Bachelor of Health Sciences graduates who specialize in Biomedicine, Ethics, Humanities and Society may move on to careers in health policy, health administration or biomedical research or take up positions on institutional review boards. They may also go on to specialize in Biomedical Ethics at the graduate level.
UWI CAVE HILL CAMPUS Healthcare Administration & Management This concentration exposes you to important aspects of the health sciences in order to develop your ability to function as an effective manager of a health care facility. The core health-related courses are complemented by courses in cost and management accounting, microeconomics, human resource management, business law, organizational behaviour and management information systems. Bachelor of Health Sciences graduates who specialize in Healthcare Administration & Management may move on to careers managing healthcare facilities such as hospitals, polyclinics and private healthcare institutions. These individuals can also specialize at the graduate level in Business Administration.
Nutrition & Society This concentration is designed for students who are interested in specializing in nutrition at the graduate level. The nutrition component compliments the core health science-related courses and provides you with a solid grounding in the basics of human nutrition, nutrition and the life cycle, nutrition education, nutrition and metabolism and nutrition in the treatment and prevention of disease. This concentration also has an infusion of sociology and psychology courses, which offers the important knowledge-based aspects of nutrition and its role in modern society. Bachelor of Health Sciences graduates who specialize in Nutrition & Society may move on to careers in health promotion and also work along dieticians and nutritionists in establishing nutrition interventions for managing diseases and for preventative measures. These individuals can also specialize at the graduate level in Nutrition.
UWI CAVE HILL CAMPUS Health Informatics This concentration will offer you the opportunity to undertake a learning experience geared toward the use of health information technology to improve and maximize the efficiency of health care. The concentration includes courses in computer science, information science, social sciences, and management sciences among others. It deals with the resources, devices, and methods required to optimize the acquisition, storage, retrieval and use of information in health. Bachelor of Health Sciences graduates who specialize in Health Informatics may move on to careers managing health-related data and electronic medical records in healthcare facilities such as hospitals, polyclinics and private healthcare institutions. These individuals can also specialize at the graduate level in computer science and information technology.
Environmental Health This concentration exposes students to the environment and its association with and impact on health. The environment and people within that space are mutually connected. Alongside the core health related courses, you will learn about environmental determinants of disease and factors (natural and man-made) which may affect the environment. The concentration will also discuss the modalities for the monitoring and surveillance of environmental hazards. Bachelor of Health Sciences graduates who specialize Environmental Health may move on to careers involving public environmental health monitoring and may also choose to function at the policy implementation level in government ministries. These individuals can also specialize at the graduate level in Public Health and/or Environmental Risk Management.
