Located in the Pisa province (Tuscany region, Italy). The district belong to an area of 330 Km 2. About 10,000 employees, with main skills concerning the traditional tanneryrelated activities. The total production of the District covers the 35% of the Italian production of tanned skins and the 98% of the Italian production leather for soles. Estimated annual sales Area description Average firm dimension Export volumes (annual) of the DESNET Estimated annual sales are about 2,000-2,100 M. 900 firms; 6 main municipalities involved in the ID; about 92,000 resident people in this area; 10,000 employed in the ID. Average dimension = 12 employees/firm. All firms are small or micro. 40% of the annual sales. Operation Structure Division of labour among firms Organization of logistics and distribution Vertical division with 3 macro production stages: preparation of hides and skins, tanning (about 400 firms), post-tanning activities. Most of non-tanning activities are executed by third-party companies (ancillary firms). The logistic service is organized by external companies and local providers.
