(pages 11-12) Questions, Answers, & Directions are Below Q 1: So why are you reimaging everyone s computer and do you have to do mine? A 1: Yes, everyone s computer must be reimaged. In order to stay up to date with our district s policy, programs, and anti-virus software, all computers must be reimaged. The only exception will be CTE computer labs. All other computers will be done. Q 2: What will my computer look like after you reimage it? A 2: After we reimage your computer will have the district s basic programs on there plus your printers and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Your computer will have etrust (our anti-virus software) as well as the following programs: 1

Q 3: I have a lot of files (word documents and PowerPoints) on my computer. How do I make sure they are not deleted? A 3: Save everything to your U: drive because everything on your desktop will be deleted. Your U: drive or a flash drive is the only safe place for your files. (See directions below) 1. Open My Computer 2. Under "Network Drives" look for your username on (U:) 3. Double click on your username to open your U: drive 4. Now just drag and drop icons from your desktop (or my documents) to your U: drive 5. If you try to drag and drop items into your U: drive and it doesn't work, you need to let me know ASAP so I can have someone at district fix it. 2

Q 4: How do I get all of my printers back? A 4: After we reimage your computer, we will automatically add all of your printers back. So this is one less thing to worry about. Q 5: How do I get all of my programs back (Word, SmartBoard, itunes, PDF writer, Quicktime)? A 5: Before we reimage it is very important that you make a list of what programs you had on your computer. Once we reimage, all of these programs will be deleted. After we reimage, we will only install Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) and your printers. All other programs must be installed by you. Below are the directions on how to install all of your favorite programs. (If you are unable to install these programs because you do NOT have administrative privileges, please notify us ASAP and we will give you administrative rights. You can also login as student to install programs. Q 6: How do I get my shortcut icons (TAC, Eduphoria, etc) back on my desktop? A 6: You will need to open the website you want to make a shortcut for and drag its web address icon onto your desktop. Open the website you want to make a shortcut for and drag the internet icon that is beside the web address onto your desktop. (Make sure the internet window doesn t take up the whole space on your monitor because you need to be able to see the internet window and your desktop. If you can t see your desktop, click on the restore down button to make the internet screen smaller.) 5

Q 7: I have a ton of websites saved under My Favorites. How can I save them and put them back on my computer once it has been reimaged? A 7: BEFORE we reimage, you need to copy your favorite s folder to your U: drive. AFTER your computer has been reimaged, you will drag it out from your U: drive back to your computer. Steps 1-4 are to be done BEFORE we reimage. 1. Open My Computer. Under "Hard Disk Drives" open the Local Disk (C:) drive. Then open the Documents and Settings folder. Look for your username, and open your folder. 2. Right click on the Favorites folder and click copy. You now can exit that window. 3. Now open My Computer and then open your U: drive. 4. You should be looking at your U: drive. In any white space on your U: drive, right click and choose Paste. This should paste your Favorites folder into your U: drive. Steps 5-9 are to be done AFTER we reimage. 6

Steps 5-9 are to be done AFTER we reimage. 5. AFTER your computer has been reimaged, you need to drag the Favorites folder from your U: drive back to where originally found it (in other words, we are doing steps 1-4 backwards). So open your U: drive. Right click on the Favorites folder and click Copy. 6. Now open My Computer. Under "Hard Disk Drives" open the Local Disk (C:) drive. Then open the Documents and Settings folder. Look for your username, and open your folder. 7. Right click in the white space on the window and click Paste. 8. A window will pop up saying that you already have a folder called Favorites and it will ask if you want to save. Click Yes to All. 9. Open the internet and look at your favorites. They should all be there. 7

Q 8: How do I get my itunes music back? A 8: BEFORE we reimage, you will need to save your itunes file to a flash drive (WARNING: the storing of files especially large video and audio files on the U: drive is restricted to school material only. For this reason, you need to copy your music files to a flash drive and NOT the U: drive.) AFTER your computer has been reimaged, you will drag it out from your flash drive back to your computer. Steps 1-4 are to be done BEFORE we reimage. 1. Open the following folders. They are listed in order: My computer>local Disk C:>Documents and Settings>Your username folder (e.g. mine is brees)>my Documents>My Music 1 st 2 nd 3 rd 4 th 5 th 6 th 2. Right click on the itunes folder and click copy. You now can exit that window. 3. Plug in your flash drive. Open My Computer and then open your flash drive. 4. Right click on the itunes folder and click CUT or Copy. If you copy the folder, the music files will still be on your flash drive. If you choose cut, the music files will no longer be on your flash drive. 7. Open the following folders. Q 9: How can I make Microsoft Office the dominate program instead of Open Office? A 9: By making Microsoft Office the dominate program over Open Office, it will allow Word, PowerPoint, and Excel to automatically open all files and documents rather than Open Office. 1. Open either the U: drive or the S: drive and find a Word document. Right click on that document. Choose Open With, and click on Choose Program 2. Click on Microsoft Word from the list of recommended programs. Check the Always use the selected program Click OK. (FYI: if you don t see Microsoft Word in the list of recommended programs, go to # 4.) 3. Now we are going to do this again for PowerPoint and Excel. Open the U: or S: drive and find a PowerPoint and Excel file. Follow the same procedures as you did for the Word document. (Again, if you don t see Microsoft program in the list of recommended programs, go to # 4.) PowerPoint 11

EXCEL 4. Let s pretend you have right clicked on a word document in your u drive but Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel are not in the Recommended Programs list. What do we do? We have to go find it Just click on the browse button. Open the Microsoft Office folder, then the Office 10 folder. Now you will see a list of all of the Microsoft Office programs. If you are looking for Word, click Winword.exe then OPEN. If you are looking for PowerPoint or Excel, just click on them and hit OPEN. Once you hit open that program will now appear under the Recommended Programs list and you can choose it, check the Always box, and click OK just like the directions above tell you. 12
