Job Profile JOB TITLE GROUP TEAM LOCATION RESPONSIBLE TO Design Team Leader (Maternity Cover) Global Fundraising Global Brand and Communications Teddington Head of Global Brand and Communications PART 1 JOB DESCRIPTION 1. PURPOSE OF THE TEAM To produce innovative, creative and response-generating publications and multimedia resources which support the fulfilment of Tearfund s strategic objectives to increase support from the evangelical community and educate it about the needs of the poor and biblical responses. 2. MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB To enable Tearfund s visual brand to shine and stand out to supporters, and in the UK charity sector, by delivering sector-leading creative concepts and executions, and inspiring, motivating and stimulating the Design Team (across on and off-line) in delivering the same. To provide line-management and performance management to the Senior Designer, Junior Designer and any other members of Tearfund s design team. 3. GENERIC PURPOSE OF THE ROLE To take responsibility for a designated area of the team s overall task or specific projects. Share in responsibility for the overall team task and be responsible for carrying out work packages Liaise with internal and external contacts Responsible for reviewing own personal development, and overall team tasks 4. PARTICIPATION IN THE SPIRITUAL LIFE OF TEARFUND To attend corporate weekly Staff Prayers on Wednesdays, to hear of Tearfund s work and to spend time in prayer and worship together. POSITION IN ORGANISATION Reports to the Head of Global Brand and Communications Team. Works closely with Copy Team Leader to interpret the wider creative direction set for the creative team. Works closely with Client Services Team to ensure communications are on brief, on time, on budget. Works closely with the Digital Comms Manager towards integrated concepts and campaigns. Works closely with the Digital Designer, providing application of the Tearfund visual brand to a digital context. Works with parts of Tearfund not operating under the Core visual Brand (e.g. Rhythms) to consider how to best facilitate the application of relevant elements of the Core Visual Brand. Works with dispersed communication teams across Tearfund (e.g. Global Communications Team) to facilitate adoption and integration of the Core visual brand into their work.

6. SCOPE OF JOB Creative direction, product planning and development o Acts as senior designer on priority projects (around 75% of time) and on these projects working in partnership with the copy-writing creative partner to: Originate creative concepts Generate innovative and impactful design solutions which clearly convey a single, strong idea. Brand implementation Budget control Originating creative concepts Design management o Managing, commissioning and liaising with external design suppliers Line Management and Spiritual Leadership o Day-to-day line-management of the design team o Providing guidance, technical support and motivation to the design team. o Providing training in design and concept development to creative team, in partnership with Copy Team Leader. o Undertaking 6-monthly appraisals with the members of the Design team. 7. DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Creative direction, product planning and development Working with the Creative Director (Head of Team) to implement high-level creative direction, and interpret this to the design team. Working closely with Copy Team Leader to deliver outstanding creative. Challenging creative expectations among clients, through outputs which widen their creative perspectives. Releasing creativity within the creative team, towards sector-leading outputs. Leading by example on projects where the Design Team Leader is working as a Snr Designer, and working with Copy Team Leader, as a creative-partnership to originate creative outputs which exceed targets. Contributing to pushing forward creative delivery, maintaining the highest standards in design and original creative concepts Representing the Creative Team over online and offline product development and co-ordination, along with the Copy Team Leader. Brand implementation Within the creative direction and brand direction set by the Head of Global Brand & Comms, the Design Team Leader will interpret, for design, the Tearfund visual look, developing and maintaining Tearfund s corporate Visual Brand Guidelines and providing application guidance and training to the design team and Project Manager s. Providing organisation-wide guidance and application-advice on all aspects of the visual brand and brand guidelines ranging from (at a micro level) logo placement through to font selection, and (at a macro level) visual direction and tone. Development of the Core visual Brand as it interplays with new corporate campaigns, and agencies. Responsible for implementing brand guidelines, as set by the Head of Global Brand & Comms, in work outputted by the Design team and ensuring the creative team are able to grasp and work with the brand, executing it in creative ways. Day-to-day responsibility for the application of Tearfund s Brand architecture in the Creative Team, subject to the overall creative direction of the Head of Creative Communications Team. Budget control Working with account managers as appropriate, ensuring design aspects of all projects are kept within budget. Drawing up design estimates in allocation (or money, where being outsourced) for projects at start of project. Providing in-house costing advice for design of prospective and actual projects

Checking and authorising invoices for external design work Originating creative concepts Directing teams in brainstorming and developing creative concepts for priority products Directing designers and technical suppliers to originate design concepts As creative team member, collaborating with the copy team to originate design and copy concepts Working with copy team in the selection of images (where working as Snr designer) and supporting copy writers in their selection of images for creative projects. Commissioning original photographic images, as required. Design management Managing relationships with external designers Assessing designers for quality, service and cost effectiveness and selecting external designers for individual projects Overall supervision of progress, quality and cost on all design jobs Advising account managers on design aspects of creative projects where these are handled by external art director Liaising with Production Manager to ensure concepts and artwork can be produced within budget Liaising with Tearfund photographers to ensure concepts are viable and consistent with photographic policy and that photographs are consistent with Art Direction, brand and house style. Art direction of photography and photo-shoots where necessary Checking, correcting and clearing designers and printers proofs Keeping up to date with trends and technical advances in the industry Maintaining a watching brief on the quality of Tearfund s designed material providing a reference point and advice within Tearfund on all matters concerning design Undertaking design work and managing members of the design team, as they undertake design for a wide range of styles, including DM, advertising, promotional and publications. Undertaking WIP (work in progress) meetings, presenting concepts in development to the Client Services Team Leader, Account Manager and Creative Director. Dealing with comments and change requests in liaison with the Creative Services and Client Services Team. Manages, commissions and liaises with external design suppliers, where work is commissioned externally: responsible for supplier management of the design function. Line Management and Spiritual Leadership Line management of designers within the Creative Team, including conducting six-monthly appraisals / reviews and any ongoing perfomance management. Proactively motivating, inspiring and challenging the design team in their own creative executions in response to client briefs and creative direction. To set Christian standards in the working environment and to lead by example. To attend corporate weekly Staff Prayers on Wednesdays, to hear of Tearfund s work and to spend time in prayer and worship together. On occasions, to actively take part in leading a morning session at Staff Prayers, in liaison with the Staff Prayers Matrix Team. Responsible for ensuring that team members attend corporate weekly Staff Prayers. To lead or participate in spiritual sessions of prayer and biblical reflection within the Team / Group. Ensuring communications are consistent with Tearfund s brand, and with brand architecture, Overseeing the design output of the Creative Communications Team, including external suppliers commissioned by the Design Team. Subject to the overall direction of the Head of Creative Communications Team (Creative Director) and working closely with the Copy Team Leader. Responsible for advising Head of Creative Communications Team and others in the Church & Supporter Relations Group on design solutions. Responsible for ensuring Creative Team delivers concepts and designs in line with briefs, in liaison with Client Services Team.

TEARFUND INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS JOB TITLE: Design Team Leader (Maternity Cover) OFFICE HOURS: Monday to Friday 9.00am - 5.00pm with one hour for lunch. This is a part time role at 21 hours per week. ANNUAL LEAVE - FULL YEAR: 25 days pro-rata + statutory bank hols + additional days at Christmas SICK LEAVE SCHEME: Based on length of service NON-CONTRIBUTORY PENSION SCHEME: Tearfund will contribute 10% of your salary to your pension.
