STAY CONNECTED CHICAGO URBAN LEAGUE IN THE NEWS Sen. Durbin Holds Press Conference on Gun Violence at CUL Earlier today, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin held a news conference at the Chicago Urban League to call for Congressional action in response to the mass shooting in Orlando last weekend and the ongoing violence that plagues Chicago. He discussed his efforts to pass legislation that prevents suspected terrorists from purchasing firearms, strengthens background checks for gun shows and online purchases, and addresses illegal gun trafficking. Packed Theater Enjoys Screening of Documentary Rosenwald Earlier this week, hundreds attended a screening of the documentary Rosenwald hosted by the Chicago Urban League and the Anti-Defamation League Chicago.The film was followed by a dynamic panel discussion featuring CUL President & CEO Shari Runner (ctr.), Lonnie Nasitir (ctr.) of the ADL Chicago, Barbara Taylor Bowman (far right) of the Erikson Institute and Sarah Duncan of Network for College Success and was moderated by Dometi Pongo (ctr.) of WVON 1690AM. Peter Ascoli, (far left) grandson of the late Julius Rosenwald, also joined the discussion adding great historic context and insight on his family's philanthropic efforts. The entire panel agreed that the film should be shown in every Chicago school. 24 CUL Students Headed to China The Chicago Urban League is proud to announce that it will once again host a student mission trip to China! For the past few weeks, 24 CUL students have been studying the
culture and the language to prepare for this 2-week journey that is sure to change their lives. A Send-off Celebration was hosted Saturday, June 11th for the student ambassadors and their families. Chicago Urban League President and CEO Shari Runner was also on hand to address the youth giving words of advice and encouragement. FBI Hosts Career Fair at CUL with a Focus on Diversity Earlier this week, the FBI Chicago Field Office hosted a career fair through CUL's Workforce Development center. Nearly 100 interested applicants attended to learn more about the employment opportunities the government agency is currently offering. Representatives shared that the FBI has enhanced its focus on diversity and inclusion both internally and externally.
