Safety Safety General safety instructions It is imperative that the following safety instructions are observed when using WALDNER laboratory furniture: If you smell gas, immediately open all windows and do not operate any electrical control elements (e. g. light switches). In case of fire, inform the Fire Brigade without delay and fight the fire with a fire extinguisher until the Fire Brigade arrives. Always keep the access to emergency showers, eye showers and emergency exits clear. Always wear appropriate safety clothing in laboratories. In case of an accident with electrical power, immediately operate the emergency stop button. Only perform hazardous tasks on your own when another person can provide first-aid in an emergency. Only use items of equipment that have been tested and that are in correct working order. Have any defects rectified without delay and inform your supervisor. Only leave the workplace if continuous supervision of your work is not necessary or if another person takes over supervision. Only work outside normal working hours with suitable precautionary measures and if it is not possible to perform the work at another time. Store hazardous materials so that they do not create a hazard to health or the environment. In general observe the following directives, specification and regulations: Richtlinien für Laboratorien der Berufsgenossenschaften (Guidelines for Laboratories) (BGR 120) Health and safety regulations Allgemeine Vorschriften (Annex 1 of the Accident Prevention Regulations "General Rules") (BGV A1) Gesundheitsdienst (Health service) (BGV C8) Umgang mit krebserregenden Gefahrstoffen (Handling carcinogenic hazardous materials) (VBG 113) Gefahrstoffverordnung (Hazardous Materials Regulations) Arbeitsstättenverordnung (Workplaces Ordinance) Legal regulations on waste 2
Safety Warning instructions used in this operating instruction In this section warnings about hazards are provided in the form of warning instructions. The nature of the hazard and the hazard category are identified by a symbol and a signal word. It is imperative that the information on how to avoid the hazard is observed. The following hazard categories are used in this document as required. DANGER! identifies hazards to the health. WARNING! is used with all warning instructions that could result in minor injuries or damage if they are not observed. CAUTION! is used with all warning instructions that could result in damage if they are not observed. SIGNAL WORD Nature and source of the hazard Possible consequence of failure to observe Information on how to avoid the hazard Correct use The supply system enables flammable liquids to be safely stored and made available in the laboratory environment. To prevent damage to the supply system, compatibility with the materials in the supply system must be ensured. When handling flammable liquids, the information in the related instruction sheet in accordance with 20 Gefahr- Stoff-Verordnung (GefStoffV) (Hazardous Materials Regulations) is to be observed. 3
Safety Work performed by WALDNER Installation and modification of WALDNER laboratory furniture is only allowed to be performed by WALDNER service personnel or authorised personnel. Maintenance on WALDNER laboratory furniture are only allowed to be performed by appropriately qualified personnel or WALDNER service personnel. Maintenance work must be performed regularly every 12 months. The spare parts required must be recorded in a log. Compliance with standards During the planning, manufacture and the installation of the WALDNER laboratory furniture product range, the applicable specifications such as EN standards, DIN, DVGW, GS marking, CE marking, VDE, BGV and VDI regulations and other official specifications and conditions in the Standards and technical rules section are taken into account. 4
Description Designs Description A special security cabinet is used for the supply system for flammable liquids. The security cabinet is connected to an ectract system and an earth wire with equipotential bonding. The security cabinet contains suitable containers for storing and providing flammable liquids. The containers are pressurised to a defined pressure using a pressure regulator. This enables the flammable liquid to be pumped out of the container. The following types of supply are possible: Cyclic supply with different flammable liquids Continuous supply with automatic changeover to second container 5
Description Cyclic supply In the case of cyclic supply, there are up to two containers with flammable liquids in the security cabinet. The containers are connected to the outlets using separate pipes. Cyclic supply Security cabinet Pressure regulator Outlet pipe Inert gas pipe Container As long as there is flammable liquid in the container, the liquid can be drawn using the outlet pipe. When it is not possible to draw any more liquid, the container must be changed, see page 10. 6
Description Continuous supply In the case of continuous supply, there are two containers with the same flammable liquid in the security cabinet. The containers are connected to a monitoring system and connect to the outlet nozzle using a common pipe. Continuous supply Security cabinet Pressure regulator Outlet pipe Inert gas pipe Electrical module for the monitoring system Container The monitoring system detects when a container is empty and automatically switches to the second container. 7
Description Monitoring system The two containers are each connected to the pipe to the outlet using a diaphragm valve. One diaphragm valve is always open when liquid is drawn. A sensor monitors whether liquid is still drawn. As soon as a container is empty, the monitoring system switches to the second container. A lamp on the electrical module is used to visually indicate when a container is empty. Monitoring system for continuous supply Switch button for lamp, second container Indicator for second diaphragm valve Indicator for first diaphragm valve Switch button for lamp, first container Green operation indicator Switch button for monitoring system The monitoring system has the following control elements: Control element Indication/function Lamps The related container must be changed, see page 10. Switch buttons for lamps Deactivate the lamps. Indicators for diaphragm valves 8 The related diaphragm valve is open. Green operation indicator The monitoring system is ready for use. Switch button for monitoring system Switch on/switch off the monitoring system
Operation Operation Specific safety instructions It is imperative that the following safety instructions are observed when using the supply system for flammable liquids: Observe Verordnung für brennbare Flüssigkeiten (VbF) (Regulations on flammable liquids). Note date of manufacture on the containers. Always connect containers to earth wire. Only store containers with flammable liquids in the security cabinet. Note safety data sheets for the flammable liquids. Note monitoring unit. Close the gas supply if it is not going to be used for a longer period (e.g. overnight). Screw thread adapter to the containers hand-tight. Keep supply air and extract air paths clear in the security cabinet. Only open electrical modules if the entire power supply has been de-energized. CAUTION! Extremely aggressive flammable liquids Damage to the supply system Prior to drawing flammable liquids, check compatibility with the materials of the supply system. DANGER! Sparking Explosion and burns 1. Connect containers to earth wires. 2. Do not wear clothes or shoes made of plastic. 9
Operation Changing the containers When a container is empty, the container must be removed and a full container connected. DANGER! Sparking Explosion and burns 1. Ensure that sparking is not possible. 2. Do not wear clothes or shoes made of plastic. Removing empty container: 1. Open security cabinet. 2. Close the gas supply at the pressure reducer. 3. Actuate the pistol-grip nozzle in the cabinet to carry out pressure relief. 4. Remove the helical gas supply hose from the container. 5. Remove the metal hose to the outlet pipe from the container. 6. Remove empty container. 7. Fit threaded adapter with tube. 8. Remove earth wire on the container. 9. Close the empty container by hand using the original cover. A full container can now be connected. Connecting full container: 1. Connect earth wire to the full container. 2. Put full container in place. 3. Unscrew the original cover. 4. Fit threaded adapter and tighten by hand. 5. Connect the metal hose to the outlet pipe to the container. 6. Connect the helical gas supply hose to the container. 7. Open the gas supply at the pressure reducer. 8. Close security cabinet. 10
Help Help Malfunctions during general operation Malfunction Possible cause Repair Green operation indicator does not illuminate. Monitoring system does not work. It is not possible to draw liquid. No power supply Lamp is faulty Broken cable Switch faulty 1. Check power supply and fuse. 2. Call customer service. 1. Check threaded adapter on the container, see page 10. 2. Inform customer service. No gas pressure Check gas pressure. 11
