Executive Summary The organisation was created by a group of unemployed youth comprising of unemployed matriculants, graduates and a concerned community member Mr NV Lengani (Debt Management Specialist: South African Revenue Services) with the purpose of developing and empowering the youth of Botshabelo and Free State province. It was evident that an organised & professional structure managed by the affected youth was needed in order to combat the high rate of unemployment, HIV & Aids, teenage pregnancy, school drop-outs, illiteracy, violent crime and substance abuse affecting the disadvantaged youths from our township. Sizanani Youth Development Organisation is a township based non - profit organisation (established in 2010 and formally registered in 2012 NPO No: 099-184). It has offices in Botshabelo and currently operates there and plans to establish other branches in other townships in the Free State province. South African youth face many obstacles that perpetuate disadvantage. Currently fewer than 10% of South African youth access higher education (SAIRR, 2009) of which only a fraction come from township or rural communities. Most township schools produce learners whose academic performance is below grade level. Poor matric results and low awareness of post-school opportunities lead to high numbers of unemployed youth (estimated at over 60% in Botshabelo). Most learners in township schools do not receive the skills development opportunities afforded their more privileged counterparts in the suburbs, including computer literacy and extra-mural activities. In addition to the difficulties that living in poverty and receiving a sub-standard education brings, many township youth are infected and/or affected by HIV/AIDS. Most of these youngsters normally drop out at grade 10, without any possibilities of finding employment and their counterparts that eventually matriculate have no prospects of furthering their studies at institutions of higher learning thereby end up being unemployed with no possibilities of ever finding employment.(unemployment rate 23.5 %, Stats SA). Even though some eventually obtain national diplomas or bachelors 3

degrees, it is estimated that 90% remain unemployed (Adcorp Employment Agency research findings, 2012). SizananiYouth model is a township-based innovative volunteer-driven project achieving remarkable results. SizananiYouth equips learners from disadvantaged communities with the skills and resources to access tertiary education and/or employment opportunities once they matriculate and graduate. SizananiYouth aims to increase the collective skill level of the population, to grow the national knowledge base, and to replicate success in more communities. The primary objective of the organization is the development and empowerment of the unemployed youth of Botshabelo and the Free State region. The secondary objectives are as follows: 1. Providing after school tutoring classes 2. To provide Life skills coaching & mentoring 3. To provide HIV & AIDS wellness program 4. Offer youth training on substance & Alcohol Abuse 5. To provide Entrepreneurial skills development training 6. To provide training on how to start, maintain, care for and grow Food Security & Income Generating projects ( food gardens, Nursery, Eggs production, recycling etc) 7. To provide for free Basic and advanced computer training skills Some of the projects are done or carried out in conjunction with our different stakeholders such as government departments, other NGO s and private companies. Each of Sizanani s programmes addresses these obstacles in simple yet effective and measurable ways: 4

Supplementary tutoring enables learners to improve their grades. 5

Life skills coaching & mentoring broadens youth awareness of post-school opportunities and ensures that learners access these opportunities 6

Computer literacy and access equips youth with essential skills and information HIV/AIDS awareness and voluntary testing provides youth with the information and VCT services they need to manage their health. Entrepreneurial skills empower youth to start & efficiently run small businesses that will lead to a reduction in unemployment rate. Youth will be trained and encouraged to start co-operatives. Food security projects will empower youth and communities to run & operate income generating projects that will provide income and food for their communities. 7
