HOPE Overview HOPE - Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally - is Georgia's unique scholarship and grant program that rewards students with financial assistance in degree, diploma and certificate programs at eligible Georgia public and private colleges and universities and public technical colleges. Giving HOPE September 1993 through July 2013 Students Amount Awarded University System 753,507 $4,534,452,611.59 Technical Colleges 914,247 $7,656,757,875.93 Private Colleges and Universities 168,361 $732,642,450.84 Totals 1,836,115* $6,923,852,938.36 NOTE: A total of 344,501 GED recipients have qualified for a HOPE GED Grant for the time period above. Of this number, 86,578 have utilized the HOPE GED Grant to attend public or private postsecondary institutions, totaling $43,161,122.22. The TOTAL FOR ALL SCHOOLS student count includes HOPE GED Grant recipients. * Students who transfer to another eligible institution are duplicated in this count. 4

The Future of HOPE The award amount will be set each year by the Governor and the General Assembly. Students and parents should monitor the HOPE program award amounts so they can plan for their share of college expenses. GSFC recommends parents, grandparents and other family members consider opening a Path2College (529) savings and investment account and save whatever amount they can afford to assist with future college costs. 6

Zell Miller Scholarship Maintaining Zell Miller 3.3 GPA at checkpoints Checkpoints End of every spring semester/quarter 30/45 attempted semester/quarter hours 60/90 attempted semester/quarter hours 90/135 attempted semester/quarter hours Students can only regain Zell Miller ONCE May still be eligible for HOPE Scholarship 16

HOPE & Zell Miller Scholarships Students lose eligibility due to one of the following: GPA requirement not met (3.0 for HOPE; 3.3 for Zell Miller) Reaching maximum attempted hours 127 semester 190 quarter Failing to use funds within seven years of high school graduation or equivalent Exception to military service time Receiving a bachelor s degree Receiving first professional degree 17

HOPE Grant Strategic Industries Workforce Development Grant (SIWDG) New grant program for 2013-2014 Fall Term Created to help students enrolled in certain high-demand certificate and diploma programs at Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) schools pay for their education Eligibility requirements same as for HOPE Grant Early Childhood Care/Education Commercial Truck Driving Practical Nursing 20

HOPE Grant Strategic Industries Workforce Development Grant (SIWDG) Awards are a fixed amount per term based on the program of study and the number of hours enrolled SIWDG is not available to dual enrollment students Approved programs and award amounts available on GAcollege411.org Program of Study Enrolled Hours Award Amount Commercial Truck Driving Early Childhood Care/Education 9 or more $1,000 (one term only) 9 or more $500 per term Practical Nursing 9 or more $500 per term Early Childhood Care/Education 8 or less $250 per term Practical Nursing 8 or less $250 per term 21

HOPE GED Grant Eligibility Must be a Georgia resident for 12 consecutive months immediately prior to the first day of classes of the school term If not a Georgia resident on the date of the GED, must be a Georgia resident 24 consecutive months immediately prior to the first day of classes of the school term Award Amount $500 voucher Expires 24 consecutive months after receipt of award Per 2013 legislation, if a GED is awarded while the student is incarcerated, the voucher expires 24 consecutive months after release from incarceration 22

Opportunity for students to earn credit hours toward an associate or bachelor s degree while they meet their high school graduation requirements State-appropriated funding Eligibility U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen Georgia resident Students can be eligible in 9 th grade Attending a University System of Georgia (USG), Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) or private postsecondary institution 25

Accel for Dual Enrollment Applying for Accel List of courses found on GAcollege411.org High school counselors must approve course selection Students must be admitted into the postsecondary institution Award Amount Public: Full standard tuition for current academic year Courses taken prior to Summer 2011 Counted towards HOPE paid hours Courses taken from Fall 2011 beyond NOT counted towards HOPE paid hours Private: Hourly amount up to a maximum of $4,000 for fulltime enrollment per academic year 26
