BGSU does not have a computer purchase requirement and expectations related to technology can vary significantly based upon the academic program and what is prevalent in that field. This guide is designed to support academic success by providing BGSU students with technology recommendations based upon their major course of study. College and academic programs have helped to make it easier for students to learn about the technical specifications, software, and accessories appropriate for each academic discipline. In addition, Ziggabyte and ITS have provided helpful information connected to using technology and related services offered at BGSU. Page 4

Computer Recommendations BGSU Recommended Minimum Hardware Specifications For the 2015-2016 academic year, Information Technology Services (ITS) and Ziggabyte recommend BGSU students use the following minimum Mac and PC hardware specifications: Processor: Intel i5 (Multicore) or AMD equivalent Storage: 258 GB Software: MS Windows 7 or 8 or Mac OSX 10.10 Memory: 8GB Warranty: 3 years Choosing the Right Computer A student s academic major often dictates if a Mac or PC is more appropriate and some academic programs have specific recommendations. However, the student has to choose the computer that is best for them. The expertly trained staff in Ziggabyte are here to help students make informed decisions on which computer is best for their situation based on academic needs, desired experience, and budget. Protect Your Investment From application to graduation Ziggabyte has you covered. Protecting your investment and getting help when needed is important to a student s success. Physical Protection The BGSU Police Department suggests installing and activating GPS/Internet tracking software onto your laptop. The Bookstore also carries cable locks to physically lock your devices when not in use. Service Depot Ziggabyte serves as a dropoff location for hardware, printer and tablet support. Ziggabyte partners with ITS on campus and a local service provider to cover all of our customers needs. AppleCare AppleCare extends coverage up to 3 years on Apple computers, ipads, and ipods. It includes telephone and technical support, global repair coverage, and allows you to take your computer to an Apple Authorized Service Provider, including BGSU ITS. Extended Warranty For the 2014-2015 academic year, it is recommended that students choose a computer with a minimum 3 year warranty. Student Technology Assistance Center The Student Technology Assistance Center (STAC) offers peer-to-peer instruction on a variety of software applications for undergraduate, graduate, and distance students. Assistance is available by appointment, through drop-in visits, one-on-one, in small groups or through class visits. STAC is located on the first floor of the Jerome Library. Student Laptop Loan Program The STAC Laptop Loan Program is an opportunity for students with a qualifying FAFSA to receive a laptop computer during the academic year. This program provides more immediate access to campus technologies for those most likely to benefit from them. Students with a registered disability through Disability Services here on campus qualify. Requirements for Application Any currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student who is receiving financial aid from the University is eligible for the program. Students may apply and enroll in the Laptop Loan Program for multiple years. Laptops are loaned out for one academic year, from September to April. Page 11
Information Technology Services Technology Support Center The Technology Support Center (TSC) is the central point of contact for questions regarding technology on campus including technology in residence halls. Data and Email Protection Software Protection Keeping your operating system, application software, and virus protection updated is one of the most effective ways to protect your computer. Refer to the Free Software Downloads section for more details. In order to protect important data from unauthorized exposure, BGSU students should follow the steps, tips, and recommendations provided at www.bgsu.edu/ infosec/dataprotection.html. Responsible Printing Information Security Office The Information Security Office provides a wealth of information regarding security awareness, data protection, and identified security threats via their website (www.bgsu.edu/infosec). Print Responsibly is a more cost-effective way to handle everyday printing and other tasks like copying, scanning, and faxing at BGSU. The site contains general knowledge guides as well as training for the Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite and many more products and systems. Alert BG AlertBG messages are sent across a wide variety of platforms to warn of such situations as crimes in progress, building closures, severe weather and canceled classes. The Primary Cell Phone number is the primary number on file with the university. Please review your personal information listed in MyBGSU to ensure your contact information is accurate and modify your preference for receiving (On) or not receiving (Off) these alerts. Digital Copyright and Technical Safeguards This program provides awareness and links to alternatives and safeguards to help protect against copyright violations. Students living in the residence halls will want to be aware of the technical safeguard layer, in regard to P2P file sharing. Data Destruction Information Technology Services offers a safe and secure option for those affiliated with BGSU for wiping and destroying data, as well as a service for recycling personally owned equipment. College of Arts & Sciences The College of Arts & Sciences is BGSU s largest and most diverse college with 24 departments, 4 schools, 5 interdisciplinary programs, almost 100 majors, over 100 minors, 27 masters programs, and 10 doctoral programs. School of Art There are three sets of recommendations for the School of Art depending on your program and major. First Year Programs (FYP) and Studio Disciplines Computer Recommendations Windows-based computers are not recommended for FYP/Studio majors. Although the initial price for a comparable Mac computer may be higher, they are much better suited to the work than a PC. Follow the BGSU Recommended Minimum Specifications (p.6) when purchasing a computer. Students who want a computer with higher specifications should refer to the technology recommendations for Digital Arts and Graphic Design, as applicable. Digital Arts FYP Recommended Software Microsoft Office ilife (includes iphoto, imovie, GarageBand, iweb, and idvd) Adobe Creative Cloud Computer Recommendations The Digital Arts program strongly suggests that students wait until their sophomore year before purchasing a computer. Digital Arts majors have access to Windows and Apple-based computer labs outfitted with the latest industry-standard software available, often more powerful than students can afford. Both Macs and PCs are used in the digital arts industry. Graphic Design If a Graphic Design major wishes to consider purchasing hardware and/or software (to be used as a supplement or substitute to the open computer labs), certain minimum requirements must be met to ensure parity with the computer labs, and most importantly, to ensure that hardware and/ or software performance remains at an acceptable level for proper productivity. Computer Recommendations The BGSU School of Art Division of Graphic Design highly recommends Apple Macintosh computers and a laptop is encouraged over a desktop. Students considering a Windows-based laptop should match or exceed the Apple laptop specifications. MacBook Pro is recommended. MacBook Air is not recommended. College of Education & Human Development The College of Education and Human Development is the academic home to six of the finest schools and departments in the area and the Department of Higher Education and Student Affairs. There are more than 50 graduate and undergraduate programs, ranging from apparel merchandising and exercise science to sport management and the college student personnel program. The College has a long, rich history in training educators and is proud to have the largest number of teacher education graduates in the state of Ohio. Page 20

For example, students completing Visual Communications Technology degrees should refer to the College of Technology recommendations. College of Health & Human Services The College of Health and Human Services is devoted exclusively to academic programs in health and human services. Programs are accredited by, but not limited to: the Council of Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, the Council on Education for Public Health, and the Council on Social Work Education. Recommended Purchases for Students to Follow Computer Recommendations Students are not required to have their own computer as there are numerous computer labs on campus that can meet the student s instructional needs. The College of Health and Human Services degree programs allow flexibility in technology usage, which enables students to use the computer platform they prefer. However, students should be advised there are several web-based courses that use a CD-ROM program that does not run on Mac computers. Some classes may require specific hardware and software. College of Musical Arts The College of Musical Arts has earned a reputation as one of the country s outstanding collegiate music programs, providing training for students pursuing professional and teaching degrees in music. The College brings the joy of music to Bowling Green and the surrounding communities with over 500 concerts, recitals, and public events each year. The College s musical calendar features more than 25 performing ensembles, plus a variety of student chamber music groups and soloists. In addition, two fully staged operas are produced annually. College of Technology, Architecture & Applied Engineering The College of Technology, Architecture and Applied Engineering offers an individualized mix of innovative majors. Most programs lead to the Bachelor s of Science in Technology degree. Architecture majors receive the Bachelor s of Science in Architecture. The College of Technology s focus is a hands-on approach to education. Students in all programs are required to complete multiple semester-long paid Cooperative Education experiences. Recommended Purchases for Students Architectural & Environmental Design Recommendations Computer hardware recommendations for students majoring in Architecture and Environmental Design are detailed and based upon the Autodesk 2014 specifications. These recommendation minimally include Window 7 32-bit OS, 4 GB of RAM, a 1240x1024 display, specific display adapter/graphics card, and the maximum CPU speed affordable. Ideally, students will want to exceed these specifications for improved performance. For detailed BGSU Architecture PC System Requirements visit Ziggabyte.BGSU.edu Construction Management Recommendations The Construction Management program recommends students have Windows-Based PC (not a Mac) Microsoft Office Department of Engineering Technology (DET) Recommendations MS Office and a Windows-based laptop (not a Mac) with the maximum memory and processing speed possible. It is highly recommended that entering students consult with a DET faculty member BEFORE purchasing a computer and any other software. VCT Computer Recommendations The Visual Communication Technology Program recommends the following for any students participating in the program, including VCT majors, minors, and auditing students. While a PC will work, it is less common in the media industry and VCT labs are primarily Mac systems.
