Parts of Your Android Tablet Front camera takes pictures or video of whatever is facing or looking at the screen. Home screen displays what is showing and is operated by touching it. Home button takes you to the home screen. Headphone jack allows you to listen in private by plugging in headphones. Back camera takes pictures or video of whatever a person aims the device toward. Speakers are where the sound comes out. Charging port is where you plug in a USB cable to charge your battery or sync files with your computer. Volume buttons allow you to increase or decrease the volume. Power button is used to power the tablet on and off by pressing it for several seconds. It is also used to put tablet into Sleep Mode by pressing it once to wake up or put to sleep (if device is on). 2
Android Tablet Status Bar Icons Status Bar The area in the top-right displays current information about your device. This includes things like signal strength, Wi-Fi status, battery life, and the time. Below are pictures of status bar icons and what they mean. 3
Android Notifications Icons Notifications Notifications are cues or alerts that let you know when something is happening on your device. To view your notifications, swipe down from the top of the screen this will open the Notification Shade. From there, you can see more information about each notification, or tap one to go to the source. 4
Free Reading and Library Apps Flipster Flipster is a free digital magazine service provided by the Crystal Lake Public Library. The Flipster app manages your magazines downloaded from the Flipster website for anytime, anywhere viewing. You will need your Crystal Lake Public Library card to use Flipster. Goodreads Discover and share books you love, find new and interesting books based on books you ve read, see what your friend are reading, write book reviews, and keep track of what you want to read. You will need to create an account with Goodreads to use this app. LibAnywhere Access your Crystal Lake Public Library account, search the library s catalog, view upcoming events on the library s calendar and more. You will need your Crystal Lake Public Library card number and password. Mango Languages for Libraries Learn a foreign language. You will need to create an account with Mango Languages from the Crystal Lake Public Library s website (Go to http://www.crystallakelibrary.org/find_stuff/atoz_databases.html and choose Mango Languages). OverDrive Media Console Read ebooks, listen to audiobooks, and watch streaming video made available by the Crystal Lake Public Library. You will need your Crystal Lake Public Library card number to use this app. 5
Step-by-Step Instructions for Tasks Done in Android Tablet Basics Class Find what version of Android you have 1. Touch Settings. 2. On the left side of the screen, scroll until you find About Device or About Tablet and touch it. 3. You will see the Android Version listed in the right side. Update Android Software 1. Touch Settings. 2. On the left side of the screen, scroll until you find About Device or About Tablet and touch it. 3. On the right side of the screen, touch Software update. 4. Touch Update. 5. To automatically update your Android software, touch and check the box for Auto update. Connect to the Crystal Lake Public Library s wireless network (Wi-Fi) 1. Touch the Settings. 2. On the left side of the screen, touch Wi-Fi. 3. Slide Wi-Fi button to on. 4. Touch CLPLWIFI. 5. It will say Connected under CLPLWIFI. 6. When new page comes up, touch I Accept. 7. Once Internet page loads, you are connected. Download an App from the Google Play Store (when you know the name of the app you want to download) 1. Touch the Play Store. 2. In the upper right-hand corner, touch the magnifying glass to open the search box. 3. The keyboard will appear. Type in the name of the app you want to download. In class we searched for LibAnywhere. Then touch the magnifying glass on the keyboard. 4. View the search results. Touch FREE. 5. Touch INSTALL. 6. Touch OPEN. 6
Location Services is a setting that uses Wi-Fi or cellular signals to determine your current location. Location data can be used by a variety of apps and websites. For example, the Weather app uses your location to provide the local forecast. You must turn on Location Services and give your permission to each app or website before it can use your location data. To Turn on Location Services 1. Touch Settings. 2. On the left side of the screen, touch Location Services. 3. Slide the Access to my location button to green to turn on Location Services. 4. Touch Agree to give consent for data collection when using Location Services. 5. You can choose if Location Services uses GPS satellites and/or wireless networks to determine your location by checking or unchecking the boxes. Move apps around Home Screen 1. Touch and hold app you want to move. 2. Drag app to desired location. 3. Release app. Close apps 1. Touch Recent Apps (usually icon that is a rectangle with another partial rectangle behind) 7
