GOSS NEWSLINER DOUBLE-WIDTH NEWSPAPER PRODUCTIVITY

2 newsliner features

THE GOSS NEWSLINER PRESS IS AN ADVANCED DOUBLE-WIDTH NEWSPAPER PRESS THAT HAS BEEN SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO MATCH THE DEMANDING REQUIREMENTS OF TODAY'S SOPHISTICATED NEWSPAPER MARKET. 3 The Goss Newsliner press is based on tried and tested technologies that have been developed by Goss for the worldwide newspaper industry and has been designed to accommodate future requirements for increased color and product variety. It is a flexible production hub, around which any newspaper can develop its own differentiated products in order to stay competitive. Newsliner features can be customized to address geographic preferences and individual customer requirements for speed, run size, color content, pagination, print quality and product flexibility. Furthermore, the Newsliner press is modular, allowing a host of enhancement or expansion possibilities to be made in the future. The features: High productivity with speed options: up to 90,000 cph up to 75,000 cph Maximum flexibility four or five-high printing towers, full choice of folders Minimum webbing time Shaftless or conventional drive Consistent color with low waste Fast start-up and easy edition changes Superior web performance reelstand to folder Folders for all applications jaw, rotary or combination Wide range of cut-offs and web widths Installed as substructure, tower or floor mounted presses Auto-roll loading, auto-margin control, shell cylinder, auto-registration, auto webbing through the bars

press overview 4 THE NEWSLINER PRESS HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO BE MORE FLEXIBLE, MORE PRODUCTIVE AND MORE COST-EFFECTIVE THAN ANY OF ITS PREDECESSORS, WITH A HOST OF ADVANCED FEATURES AND CHOICES. The Newsliner press incorporates the essential elements that optimize the web offset printing process. Choices for each element give newspapers the ability to customize the press to their exact production requirements. For example, the choices of open fountain or DigiRail digital inking, level- or couple-shaftless drives and jaw or rotary folders, ensure flexibility for the future, allowing users to stay competitive as market circumstances change. Modular printing towers Low profile 'H' style printing units can be arranged to print 1/1 to 4/4 within a single footprint. An optional fifth level can be provided for special colors. A Newsliner press line can have as many towers as needed to tailor its output to specific requirements in terms of print capacity, pagination and color content. The low profile of Newsliner printing units means that a four-high tower can fit into a smaller space than most double-width presses and yet access is optimized for plating and maintenance. The shorter distance between printing couples reduces fanout and enhances color registration. Choice of inking systems Newsliner press users can choose from alternative inker technologies. This makes it the first large newspaper press to be offered with future upgradeable inker choices: open fountain, and GATF InterTech Award winning digital inking systems.

Shaftless drives The choice of shaftless drives on a Goss Newsliner press further improves print quality by giving more control over the web position, from print couple to print couple. Shaftless drives also maximize press flexibility making complex press configurations easier to accommodate. In addition, major advantages are obtained when frequent changes in web path, color usage or pagination are required. Job changes are much faster. Automatic web feed Downtime for webbing, either at press startup, reconfiguration or due to a web break is kept to a minimum on a Newsliner press through a new automated webbing system. This feature makes a major contribution to the overall net productivity of the press when a variety of work with different specifications is being produced. Turner bar package 5 Reelstands Goss offers reelstands with both running belt and core brake tension controls. These provide consistent web running with fast re-loading, high paste accuracy and low core waste. Goss CT reelstands, either 2 or 3 arm, utilize an integral Constant Tension (CT) infeed system controlled by on-board electronics. Auto-margin control and autoreel loading are also available. The turner bar package of the Newsliner contributes to the overall flexibility of the press, providing turning and slitting under heavy-duty operation. The turner bars also provide essential draw for the web by means of motorized rollers as well as imposition register for multiple webs, using sophisticated sidelay controls and webbing through the bars. Modular folder system A major element of the Newsliner press system and another aspect of its flexibility is the choice of 2:3:3, 2:5:5 jaw folders or the high speed 2:2 and 3:2 rotary folders. Depending on this choice, the Newsliner press can accommodate any product specification. Internal view External view

newsliner printing units 6 THE FOUR-HIGH TOWERS OF THE GOSS NEWSLINER PRESS CURRENTLY REPRESENT A VERY ECONOMIC AND EFFICIENT WAY TO PRINT HIGH-QUALITY FULL COLOR ON BOTH SIDES OF THE WEB. The straight through vertical web allows optimum tension control during printing, minimizing register problems and maintaining consistent print quality. Simple operation The four-high configuration ensures that the Newsliner press is simpler to operate than an equivalent satellite press, with two level operation and easy access resulting in faster plating, pre-inking and makeready. The design also provides uncomplicated and short web leads from the reelstand to the folder. These features contribute to the high net productivity of the Newsliner press, which combines a maximum speed of up to 90,000 cph or 75,000 cph with the ability to change jobs in the fastest possible timeframe. Flexible configuration The flexibility of the four-high concept can best be illustrated by the diagrams on this page. These show one four-high printing tower handling different pagination demands, from 16 pages of 4/4 color on a single web to two webs passing through the

same tower but printing 32 pages of mono two-color work, on both sides of the web. 16 PAGES 4/4 7 The use of more than one folder provides an extra perspective to production flexibility. For example, using three four-high towers a newspaper can produce a multitude of products from 48 pages collect in full color to 96 pages collect with two colors throughout, into one folder. Alternatively, it could produce two separate products: 32 pages collect of 4/4 color into the first folder, and 32 pages collect of 2/2 color into the second folder the second job could be contract work or a supplement to the main newspaper. Building stacked towers from individual printing couples offers ultimate printing flexibility. Five-high towers, consisting of ten printing couples, are also offered by Goss. 5 5 3 2 3 1 3 4 3 5 DIGITAL INKING 5 5 5 32 PAGES 2/2 Reelstand substructure or table mounted 3 3 Most Newsliner presses are configured for two-level operation where the reelstands are on a separate level to the printing towers. In this case, the printing units can either be supported by the superstructure of the reelstands or by a load-bearing concrete table or floor. For a single floor press configuration, Goss provides infeeds that allow the reelstands to operate at right angles to the line of the press. 4 3 3 5 5 1 BLANKET CYLINDER 2 PLATE CYLINDER 3 DAMPENER SYSTEMS 4 INTERNAL ACCESS POINTS 5 DIGIRAIL DIGITAL INKING

key technologies 8 THE NEWSLINER PRESS OFFERS A WIDE CHOICE OF PRESS DRIVES TO MEET LAYOUT, FLEXIBILITY AND MANPOWER CONSIDERATIONS. The Newsliner drive options include conventional shaft, for standard press configurations, couple shaftless and level shaftless, for maximum press flexibility. Shaftless drive system The Goss level- or couple-shaftless drive system provides excellent control of web tension from reelstand to folder. Control over the web position at all times is provided by electronically synchronized AC electric servomotors, able to resolve angular movement to one part in 4 million. Each printing couple or level is driven individually, so speed and register are optimized within a stacked printing tower. Shaftless motors are also used elsewhere on the press, on turner bars and folders for example. In this way, tension gain throughout the press can be better controlled, providing the best conditions for all operations through to product delivery. Shaftless press drives provide more operational benefits, particularly where there are complex press configurations with frequent changes of web path, color and paging. Shaftless benefits: Less waste due to good start-up and on-run register Fewer web breaks, due to better tension control Optimum access Simple synchronization of printing units into a folder Fast 'in register' acceleration, and slow down Later plating for edition changes some couples left off impression Complex press configurations without dual drive shafts or multiple clutches Independent couple inching resulting in less time required to mount plates Conventional shaft drive Conventional press drives continue to be a choice for Newsliner press installations where work does not involve splitting four-high towers or frequent changes of web path.

GOSS PROVIDES ALTERNATIVE INKING SOLUTIONS FOR THE NEWSLINER PRESS TO ADDRESS THE DIVERSE DEMANDS OF TODAY'S SOPHISTICATED NEWSPAPER PRINTING MARKET AND TO ACCOMMODATE REGIONAL PREFERENCES AND PRODUCTION PRIORITIES. 9 Open fountain/undershot inking This conventional inking solution has been taken to its highest level of evolution by Goss. Exceptional engineering accuracy and the ability to set color via 32 separate printing zones across the web results in a simple and robust system which is easy to use and very reliable. Optional page-wide removable pans dramatically reduce the time taken for ink changeovers. DigiRail digital inking Goss DigiRail inking uses gear pumps to feed a stream of accurately metered ink pulses onto the ink train, replacing the traditional ink tray of open fountain systems. The ink stream can be varied in relation to image density and press speed, providing a greater control over color under varying press running conditions. In conjunction with digital pre-setting data, this offers lower makeready waste on cold and hot start-ups. By pre-setting the inker from RIPped page data or from film or plate scanners, ink densities reach their optimum with fewer waste copies and even density increases ink mileage. Each newspaper s specific operational environment and quality parameters should determine inking system choices. Gear Pump Ink Rail Control Valve Ink Supply on off Fountain Roller bypass Goss DigiRail technology feeds ink pulses to the ink train through individual valves which are controlled digitally

total web control 10 THE NEWSLINER PRESS DESIGN PROVIDES OPTIMIZED WEB TENSION CONTROL FROM REELSTAND TO FOLDER. THIS IS ACHIEVED IN THREE MAIN ZONES OF THE WEB PATH: REELSTAND TO FIRST PRINTING COUPLE; FROM THE FIRST PRINTING COUPLE TO THE LAST; AND FROM THE EXIT OF THE PRINTING UNITS TO THE FOLDER. Reelstands Goss CT reelstands control tension with either running surface belt or core brake. In running belt versions, sophisticated electronics use data from the belt to control the exact amount of paper delivered into the press and hence its tension. As a result, CT reelstands need no additional infeed system, providing simpler webbing, shorter web paths and less moving parts to maintain. Core brake reelstands are also offered by Goss. The Newsliner press can be fitted with two or three-arm reelstands. They can be freestanding units at either press or subpress level or as a substructure support for the printing units. All are designed for one-man operation with automatic reel pasting at maximum press speed. High paste accuracy and low core waste are assured by on-board electronics linked to the main press control system. The CT two- or three-arm reelstand has an added 'split arm' feature, essential to newspapers that have regular pagination changes for different editions or supplements. All Goss reelstands are compatible with labor saving automation, such as AGV systems, ARL (Auto-roll loading) and auto-margin sidelay.

Turner Bar package showing Bay Windows used for repositioning color anywhere within a publication Folders Goss provides rotary, jaw and combination folder options to suit all mainstream production requirements. Each folder is modular in design and has been refined through years of practical experience to provide accurate and flexible capabilities with a focus on reliability. An impressive list of standard features completes Goss folder packages making them the most versatile available. Rotary folders The rotary 3:2 folder offers high output, advanced folding to produce tabloid newspapers up to 144 pages straight and up to 256 pages collect. Broadsheet newspapers up to 96 pages straight and up to 160 pages collect can also be accommodated. Major features include automatic mode change and on-therun lap fold and pin release adjustment. There is also a full set of options to provide motorized adjustments and nip setting, controlled by imposition data. The rotary 2:2 folder alternative produces up to 48 pages in straight production. Jaw folders The advanced J2:5:5 jaw folder offers consistently high accuracy of folding and delivery for high pagination newspapers and semi-commercial work, with the accent on fast adjustment and changeover. The J2:5:5 is designed to produce broadsheet products up to 96 pages collect, and tabloid newspapers up to 192 pages collect. The features and options are similar to the rotary folder with the addition of a collect stitcher and imposition set capability. For lower paginations up to 80 pages broadsheet or 160 pages tabloid, the Goss J2:3:3 folder is available. Combination folders The modularity of Goss folders allows presses to have both rotary and jaw folders working in combination. These can be stacked for single point delivery or positioned in different locations for multi-press operation. Turner bars The Newsliner press turner bar package has been designed to enhance press flexibility, reduce press setup times and make cleaning and maintenance easy, achieved by three key features: Fixed position bars eliminate the complex mechanisms associated with motorized multi-position bars, providing a system which is more reliable and quicker to set, with better prediction and control of web tension. Air pressure at the turner bars is variable to optimize upper-press web tensions. Bay windows provided to allow flexible color positioning in a newspaper. Page compensators a cantilever design contributes to fast webbing-up by allowing easy access to the compensator rollers, which provide precise head-to-head page alignment of the webs prior to folding. 11 Rotary 3:2 Folder J2:5:5 Jaw Folder

quality & speed 12 EVERY SINGLE ELEMENT OF THE NEWSLINER PRESS HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO MAINTAIN PRINT QUALITY THROUGHOUT THE BROADEST RANGE OF APPLICATIONS AND AT ALL RUNNING SPEEDS.

13 The design philosophy of the Newsliner press is derived from vast experience in the development and innovation of large newspaper presses and a fundamental culture of 'quality first' manufacture. Plate and blanket cylinders The stability of the plate and blanket cylinders and the exact control of 'nip' pressure gives the most accurate dot reproduction under all press running conditions. The control over nip pressure is attained by the use of hardened steel bearers, which keep a precise distance between the plate and blanket cylinders. 'Shell' cylinders can be provided for optimum color registration. This divided cylinder will automatically adjust the sidelay and circumferential registers on each half of the web using auto scanners for precise color registration throughout the run. The quality of the plate and blanket cylinders also contributes to the ease of use and printing accuracy of the Newsliner press by the use of 'no-pack' blankets. These can be applied directly to the surface of the cylinders without the use of a waterproof underlay. Spray bar dampener system Precise control over water balance is provided on the Newsliner press by an enclosed contamination-free system which feeds the three roller dampener train with fluid at a controlled and constant temperature. The system ensures consistent and even water laydown throughout the speed range of the press, optimizing print quality. Additional controls give page-wide remote control, a flood feature for fast clean-up and a unique 'trim' feature to accommodate multiple web widths. Web feed system The Newsliner press is fitted with the latest web feed system which is automated and fast. It uses a shuttle to feed the web through the press, at a speed of up to 40ft (12 meters) per minute, guided by a robust track. The track has switching points so the web feed can change direction, to comply with the pagination and color content. All switching points can be controlled automatically from the imposition plan, reducing webbing-up time especially for job changes. Multiple webs can be fed simultaneously as far as the turner bars. Here they are automatically 'parked' for manual placement into the folder. Combining automated and manual operation in this way provides a system which is easy-to-use and fast and reliable. Optionally, through-thebar webbing to the folder is available. Press controls The Newsliner press is built with an 'open' controls system architecture, allowing newspapers to choose the most appropriate solution. Whatever the choice, the interfaces between the reelstands, printing units and folders deliver a fast, efficient and reliable response to ensure optimum printing under all conditions and speeds. Press options The trend for newspapers to differentiate their products by the addition of supplements, magazines and special interest sections has been the driving force behind the in-built flexibility of the Newsliner press. A number of optional auxiliary components can be fitted or retrofitted to the press for flexible web operation. With these additions, the Newsliner press can produce newsprint and commercial quality supplements at the same time, with gluers or stitchers added to the relevant folder.

precision engineering 14 THE GOSS SAYAMA PLANT IN JAPAN IS THE HOME OF THE NEWSLINER PRESS, WHERE PRECISION ENGINEERING RESIDES IN ABUNDANCE WITH AN ADDED FOCUS ON CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT. This continuous improvement not only applies to the quality of the products manufactured, but also the range of products offered to meet customer needs, including counter stackers, labelers, wrapping equipment, strapping machines and complete mailroom system. The Goss Newsliner has received many accolades, an example of which is Maeil Business Newspapers in Korea which claimed that the Newsliner print quality for advertising pages easily outstripped competitive products. This success is down to precision in all things extending beyond design and manufacture to delivery dates and short installation times achieved by staging the press in the plant.
