Series Record This is the first meeting between the two institutions. Next Up The Bison have a challenging schedule over the next 10 days following the Medgar Evers game, Howard will travel to Las Vegas to face Texas Southern on Monday in the middleweight division of the Men Speak Up Event they will follow Wednesday in either the consolation bracket or championship bracket of the tournament Howard will then return to DC to host William & Mary on Saturday, November 28 at 4 pm in the Burr three days later on Monday, November 30, the Bison will host Central Penn at 7 pm in Burr. A Nickelberry Staple Defense is one of the things that Coach Nickelberry preaches to his team on a consistent basis Last season, the Bison ranked among the nation s best in three-point shooting defense with a junior-laden team, the message has gotten across again this season as Howard holds its opponents to 20 percent from beyond the arc. A Byrd Flies James J-Byrd Daniel, III has shown why he is on the verge of becoming a complete guard during his freshman season, he burst on the scene as a prolific scorer, averaging over 21 points per game during last season, the 5-11 junior from Hampton, Va., added to his game, dishing out a career high in assits and leading the MEAC in steals for the season, the talented Daniel is averaging 25.5 points, 4.5 assists and 5.5 steals in two games against Atlantic 10 s UMass and Big 10 opponent Rutgers. Miller Time After suffering through leg injuries, Miller got a chance to show the skills that had Howard head coach Nickelberry excited when he signed him last year, the talented 6-5 junior guard improved significantly over the first season, finishing third on the team in scoring with almost 12 points per game he also led the team in shooting percentage at 50 percent the native of Clinton, N.C., is off to an even better start through two games, he is averaging almost 21 points per game, 4.5 rebounds and he is shooting at 53 percent from the field. Unsung No Longer Damon Collins has quietly gone about displaying his all-around skills on the basketball court whether it is driving to the basket or finding an open teammate, the 6-5 junior from Dallas does it with little fanfare through two games, Collins is averaging almost nine points and 3.5 rebounds while dishing out seven assists and getting six steals. KEVIN NICKELBERRY HEAD COACH When Kevin Nickelberry was hired as head men s basketball coach at Howard University in 2010, he inherited a program that had not had a winning season in almost a decade. Nickelberry, who had served as an assistant coach on the Hilltop from 1994-98 under Mike McLeese, has shown Bison nation why he has earned the reputation as a program builder before he came to the Hilltop. over a decade. Slowly but surely, the hard-working Nickelberry would get the ship right. Using his well respected recruiting skills, he began to build through freshmen and an occasional transfer. The results were not seen immediately but there was progress. Then it all began to come together last season when the talent-laden sophomore class along with senior transfer James JC Carlton, meshed together. It resulted in a 16-win season, the most since the 2001-02 season. Moreover, the Bison went 10-6 in the MEAC, good for fourth place and received their highest tournament seed in Some significant milestones include breaking the team s non-conference losing streak that was one of the tops in the country at the time; a signature road win at South Alabama last season; and breaking a 20-losses in a season streak. Last season s success was buoyed by Carlton, who was named to the first team All-MEAC team and James J-Byrd Daniel, III. Daniel, the former MEAC Rookie of the Year, was named to the second team and earned his place in the Howard history books, becoming the first male player in school history to reach the 1,000-point plateau in only his second season. It also marked the first time since the 2001-02 season that the Bison have had two players honored on the first and second teams. It must also be noted that during Nickelberry s tenure, several members of the team have been named to the MEAC Commissioner s All-Academic team. The mercurial Nickelberry provided a jump start in the classroom and Howard now boast one of the top basketball academic programs in the MEAC and the country with the team sporting a 3.0 GPA going into the 2015-16 season. Before coming to Howard, Nickelberry was the head coach at Hampton University from 2006-2009. During his three years with the Pirates, he helped guide his teams to 20 non-conference wins, collecting 49 Division I wins during his tenure, which ranked second among MEAC schools. He has also been responsible for producing 22 All-conference selections. A native of Washington, D.C., Nickelberry spent the 2009-10 year as the head coach of the Libya National Basketball Team. Nickelberry began his coaching career as the head women s basketball coach at Columbia Union College in 1991 and moved to Howard University for four seasons, from 1994-1998. During his time in the coaching ranks, Nickelberry worked in all areas including recruiting, fundraising, marketing and public relations. The 50-year-old has been a major part of every aspect, especially during his three-year tenure at Clemson from 2003-2006 when he recruited nine players on the Tigers 2007-08 and 2008-09 NCAA Tournament teams. Nickelberry, who has paid his dues, served as the assistant coach at UNC Charlotte for two seasons. Over that period in 2001-03, he helped develop Eddie Basden, the second player in Conference USA history to win Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year awards in the same season. He also contributed to successful programs at Holy Cross and at Monmouth. For his efforts, he was rated among the Top 25 Up-and-Coming college basketball coaches by The Sporting News and Hoopscooponline.com in 2008. Nickelberry graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications from Virginia Wesleyan University. He and his wife, Mamie, have two sons, Kyan and Kelby.
