Course Guide March 2015 Employability Changing Gears Level 2 8 Days Our most popular employability course, that s being delivered in Job Centres across Cornwall. Changing Gears is designed to give learners the opportunity to learn and practice a range of skills that will better their chances of finding employment. The usual suspects such as CVs, application forms and job search are covered within this course, but most of content is about getting the learners to reflect and identify their transferrable skills, and set realistic goals, whilst equipping them with the communication skills and personal skills required to achieve them. Work Club Our drop-in work club is open to everybody on a Wednesday at our centre, between 9.00am and 4.00pm. Here learners can access personalised support and one to one training, help with CVs and covering letters, access to computers for Universal Jobmatch and online applications, learn interview techniques and explore job and selfemployment opportunities. Self Employment Self Employment Level 1 / Level 2 4 Days / 8 Days We offer a number of courses accredited by NOCN or ILM, which at the lower end allow learners to explore self employment as an option, including research into the viability of their business idea; through to longer courses that equip them with the knowledge, skills and support to produce business plans, cash flow forecasts and understand how to get started. If learners are predominately interested in a specific sector, then the course can be tailored to that, or specific business structures (CICs). IT and Technology ITQ (IT User Skills) Level 1 / Level 2 / Level 3 8 Days / 10 Days / 12 Days ITQs are nationally recognised, and are valued by employers as being a benchmark IT qualification. There are a wide range of units, which can be combined so that the qualification meets the specific needs of the learner / workplace. This can involve use of email, word processing, spreadsheets, internet safety and much more. The learner will compile a portfolio of evidence which will come from a variety of practical tasks, tutor observations and professional discussions with the tutor. Throughout the course learners will be able to put their newly acquired computer skills into practice. Step up to IT Level 1 6 Days This course teaches learners how to get to grips with basic computer use, and equips them with the skills needed to use IT to search for work. It covers a range of helpful jobseeking tips, as well as learning how to send emails, creating a CV, completing online job applications and using the government s Universal Jobmatch site. Getting to Know your Tablet PC Level 2 6 Days This course teaches learners how to use a Tablet PC effectively to customise preferences, download apps and games, search and browse online, use social media, understand and troubleshoot potential faults and to use and enjoy the tablet to its full potential. Learners are given a tablet to use throughout the course, which is theirs to keep upon successful completion. Teaching and Supporting People Award in Education and Training (AET) / Certificate in Education and Training (CET) -Previously PTLLS & CTLLS Level 3 / Level 4 8 Days / 17 Days These qualifications are nationally recognised teaching qualifications for use within the adult learning sector. For those wishing to teach, then the AET and CET will provide the perfect base on which to do so. The AET provides a firm foundation to those new to teaching and will equip learners with a number of tools and strategies to help them with their delivery. The CET takes things a step further and will allows learners to delve deeper into how people learn, and how different teaching methods can get different results, including action learning, personalisation and the strategies required to plan and develop effective and engaging courses. Certificate in Assessment / Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment -Previously A1 Assessor and V1 Internal Verifier Awards Level 3 / Level 4 These qualifications are the new standard for anyone wanting to assess or verify qualifications, including NVQs and Apprenticeships. There is a selection of units that learners can undertake depending on the extent of their assessing / verifying, and both qualifications have an element of knowledge and understanding as well as the need to actively assessing / verifying learners work. Work Based Learning Customer Service It s easy to deal with customers, but achieving good customer service isn t as easy! These courses will develop skills in customer service such as verbal communication, body language, customer relations, reflective practice and making a positive first impression. Business Administration For those working within this field, these courses allow the opportunity to gain recognition for existing skills, as well as encouraging the learner to reflect on possible areas for development and equipping them with the skills to do so. Advice and Guidance Level 3 / Level 4 3 Months / 6 Months Designed to accredit current knowledge as well as exploring new strategies, skills and techniques. These courses are suitable for anyone delivering advice or guidance to individuals in a wide range of topics. Learners need to be working within this sector. ICT With over 15 optional units to pick from, these IT User qualifications can be tailored to meet the specific needs of any IT based workplace, from a typical office (such as Microsoft Word, Excel and email) through to specialist users of software such as web designers or bespoke CRM systems. Apprenticeships Unlike traditional classroom learning, apprenticeships offer the flexibility of learning practical skills in and around the workplace environment. We develop flexible work-based training programmes that give individuals a chance to build their skills and gain a practical, accredited qualifications tailored to the job they want to do. For those seeking employment, apprenticeships can be a fantastic way to start a new career. We are currently offering full apprenticeships in: Business and Administration, Customer Service and IT. Job-Specific Licenses SIA Level 2 Award in Door Supervision 5 Days 225 (funding may be available) A varied programme designed to equip learners with the training, skills and knowledge required to work in the private security industry. Completion of this course, along with a confirmed identify and criminal records check will enable learners to apply for a SIA licence, which we provide support with. Revision materials are provided. CSCS 6 Days 300 (funding may be available) This course is for individuals intending to work within the construction industry. The qualification covers risk assessment, working at height, manual handling, improving health and safety at work, safe operation of equipment and the importance of fire safety. It will help prepare learners for the the CSCS test, which are arranged for you following the course. Revision materials are provided, and CSCS card is free upon successful completion of the test. Workplace Skills Sales and Marketing Level 2 8 Days People buy people. Learn the art of conversation, and how selling, influencing & negotiating can become a transferable skill. This course teaches learners how to use tried and tested sales techniques such as; assertive communication, Socratic questioning, handling objections, how to qualify leads, creating and developing databases and use of company documentation. Learners can apply these skills through web content, telemarketing, business networking, presentations and face to face sales meetings. Personal Development Confidence Matters Learners will gain a range of tools and strategies to help them feel more confident in different situations. This course covers body language, anger management strategies. positive thought, recognising your own achievements, handling difficult situations, assertiveness skills and how to present yourself in a positive way when decision making and negotiating. Speaking in Public and Presentation Skills Be it in interviews, social situations or for the purpose of work, many people find themselves nervous when speaking in public. This course will teach a number of tools and strategies to help learners control their nerves and feel more comfortable, by learning how to use prompt cards, positive anchor points and breathing techniques. Basic presentation skills and confidence building tips are also covered. Budgeting Packed full of tools, techniques and tips, this course will equip learners with the skills needed to manage their budget. Areas covered include; how to budget, how to cope on a limited budget, what is value for money, savings and opportunities to save money by shopping for the best deals. Learners will develop their own budget plan as part of the course. Tennancy Skills 6 Days This course will allow learners to explore how to plan and move into their own rented property, and learn skills such as personal money management, financial products and services, applying for housing, moving home, looking after a new home and how to manage personal health & hygiene. NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) Level 3 / Level 5 13 days over several weeks / 22 days over several weeks Through a mixture of theory and hands-on learning, learners develop a psychological approach to understanding ourselves, our behaviours and how we relate to others. NLP is the basis of many coaching and motivational programmes, it forms part of sales and management training, and is used extensively in personal and work development. This course is designed to equip learners with tools and techniques for practical use of NLP, as well as a theoretical understanding of how NLP works. This includes; the background and history NLP what it is and where it came from, core patterns in NLP looking at human communication patterns, body language and how we make sense of the world, altered states and mindfulness looking at the human mind, conscious and unconscious processing. Sales Phobia More information coming soon. Confidence Building, Assertiveness and Motivation Learners will be given a range of tools and strategies to help them feel more confident in situations. This course teaches basic assertiveness skills including how to assert yourself in a positive way when decision making and negotiating, body language and what it says about you, how to motivate yourself and anger management strategies. Short Courses Emergency First Aid at Work A course that covers the roles and responsibilities of the Emergency First Aider, assessing an incident, recognising signs and symptoms of injury and illness and assisting a casualty who is suffering from injury and illness. Fire Safety This course is aimed at anyone involved in the management of fire safety in any workplace. This includes managers, supervisors, team leaders, fire wardens (marshals) and staff working in any area where there is a potential risk of fire. Health & Safety in the Workplace A course that will enable learners to work safely and to recognise and deal with hazards at work. The aim of the qualification is to provide knowledge of the basic health and safety practices essential in the workplace. This includes the hazards and risks along with the relevant legislation, and ensures awareness of cost-effective, practical control methods.
