Amelia Seyssel June 2013 28 Italian Songs and Arias of the 17th and 18th Centuries Based on the Editions by Alessandro Parisotti Published by G. Schirmer 2008 [published in 5 volumes depending on Voice type & key] Piano & Vocal scores (only) are compared to... Antique Arias edited and revised by Alessandro Parisotti published by Ricordi 2010 [publishd in 5 volumes with one key only for all arias; 100 different arias total, 20 in each volume] The following SUMMARY is in order by the composer as listed in the Schirmer edition; highlighted titles indicate those arias that are listed anywhere in the current Suzuki Voice ESA manual (March 2013 version). Comments are regarding the scores and text only. The VOCAL lines in particular were examined for all language idiosyncracies and markings, including any accents, stress marks, and ornaments. Particular VOCAL differences for any aria are also highlighted where they are considered notable. Overall differences: The Schirmer edition adds measure numbers, where Ricordi had none. The Schirmer edition offers no metronome markings, where Ricordi does. The Schirmer edition adheres to the more recent publishing laxity in notating the vocal line: for example, eighth notes are always barred in each measure regardless of the syllables of the text, although slurs still do generally connect multiple notes to one syllable when that occurs in the line. The 2008 Schirmer edition no longer supplies a singeable English version for any of the arias; Italian only. Where Schirmer arias also appear in the Ricordi edition (some do not), most but not all of the Ricordi edition KEYS for those arias are included in either the MEDIUM HIGH or MEDIUM volumes of the Schirmer edition. In some cases, the Ricordi KEYS are not compatible with any of the Schirmer volumes they are unique to Ricordi. 2008 Schirmer edit. pg number Anonyomous pg 6 pg 1 pg 10 Aria title & comments Nina This is not in the Ricordi edition. NOTE: the old Schirmer lists this composer as being attr. to Giovanni B. Pergolesi Essentially the same as the older Schirmer MEDIUM HIGH. Differences: there is no singeable English; ADDED to the piano part is an introductory chord marked as optional introduction chord O leggiadri occhi belli (same key as Ricordi = Schirmer MEDIUM HIGH) Essentially the same as the Ricordi version. Very minor differences: missing a tie in the RH piano in measures 33 and 74 Pietà, Signore! This is not in the Ricordi edition. NOTE: the old Schirmer lists this composer as being Alessandro Stradella Essentially the same as the older Schirmer MEDIUM HIGH. Differences: there is no singeable English; many dynamic markings have been either changed or dropped entirely; any suggested appogiatura markings have been dropped. 2010 Ricordi edit. volume & pg number vol 4 pg 13 Giovanni Bononcini note: Ricordi lists this composer to be Severo de Luca Non posso disperar Schirmer does not have this available in the same key as the pg 18 Ricordi edition (E minor); the nearest Schirmer key is in F minor MEDIUM HIGH; next key down is E = minor MEDIUM No essential difference to the Ricordi score. Very minor differences: ADDED to the piano part is an introductory chord marked as optional introduction chord ; slur missing from vocal line at measure 8 pg 25 Per la gloria d adorarvi Schirmer does not have this available in the same key as the Ricordi edition (F major); the nearest Schirmer key is in G major MEDIUM HIGH; next key down is E = major MEDIUM Essentially the same as Ricordi with very minor differences: ornament following a trill added to the vocal line at measure 71; minor differences in phrasing of the piano part (measures 60 64); minor difference in dynamic marking measure 70; vol 2 pg 52 vol 3 pg 52

Amelia Seyssel June 2013 Giulio Caccini pg 32 Amarilli (same key as Ricordi = Schirmer MEDIUM HIGH) ADDED to the piano part is an introductory chord marked as optional introduction chord Note measure 33 in the VOCAL line: Schirmer marks the ornament as: x while Ricordi marks it as: Very minor other differences to the Ricordi score are primarily regarding overall dynamic markings and other articulations added, for example, smorzando added to measure 18 19; colla voce added to the final measures; pp marking instead of a p marking; etc. vol 2 pg 63 Antonio Caldara pg 37 pg 43 Alma del core This is not in the Ricordi edition. Essentially the same as the older Schirmer MEDIUM HIGH. Differences: there is no singeable English; the piano introduction has been shortern, dropping 16 measures of intro down to 8 measures of intro; Sebben, crudele (same key as Ricordi = Schirmer MEDIUM) In all important essentials, the same as the Ricordi version Very minor other differences to the Ricordi score are primarily regarding overall dynamic markings added or dropped, for example in the Schirmer edition: measure 13 drops rit ; measure 26 add a tempo ; measure 32 adds dim to the piano part; measure 34 adds a tempo ; measure 62 drops a tempo ; measure 73 changes rit assai to simply rit ; measure 74 adds a tempo vol 1 pg 42 attr. to Antonio Caldara Come raggio di sol (same key as Ricordi = Schirmer MEDIUM) pg 48 Identical to the Ricordi version vol 1 pg 49 Giacomo Carissimi Vittoria, vittoria! (same key as Ricordi = Schirmer MEDIUM HIGH) pg 53 Identical to the Ricordi version vol 1 pg 1 Francesco Cavalli pg 60 Delizie contente (same key as Ricordi = Schirmer MEDIUM) Essentially identical to Ricordi version. Minor differences in dynamic markings, for example: opening dynamic in Ricordi is p, while Schirmer indicates mp ; forte marking for vocal line is missing in measure 5; piano marking for vocal line is missing in measures 19 & 53 vol 2 pg 67 Antonio Cesti pg 79 Intorno all idol mio (same key as Ricordi = Schirmer MEDIUM HIGH) Essentially identical to Ricordi version. Minor differences: p marking to opening vocal line is dropped; piu cresc marking is dropped from the vocal line in measure 47; tie is added to RH B > in piano part in measure 59 vol 1 pg 6

Amelia Seyssel June 2013 Francesco Durante Danza, danza (same key as Ricordi = Schirmer MEDIUM HIGH) pg 68 Essentially identical to the Ricordi version. Note measures 40 & 60 in the VOCAL line: Schirmer marks the ornament as two 16 th (à) notes while Ricordi marks the ornament as two 32 nd (â) notes pg 74 Vergin, tutt amor (same key as Ricordi = Schirmer MEDIUM HIGH) Vocal line identical to the Ricordi version. Minor changes to the piano accompaniment: opening piano dynamic changed to f rather than ff ; opening and closing piano solo LH octaves are replaced with single pitches; piano rit at measure 4 is removed; vol 3 pg 65 vol 3 pg 62 attr. to Tommaso Giordani note: Ricordi lists this composer to be Giuseppe Giordani pg 84 Caro mio ben (same key as Ricordi = Schirmer MEDIUM HIGH) Essentially the same as the Ricordi, but there are some very small differences: measure 3 piano part RH slurs are left out; measure 5 dolce is left out; measure 21 a tempo is added; measure 28 colla voce is added; last measures of piano part the double ff is removed. vol 3 pg 77 Christoph Willibald von Gluck O del mio dolce ardor Schirmer does not have this available in the same key as pg 88 the Ricordi edition (E minor); the nearest Schirmer key is F minor MEDIUM HIGH; next key down is E = minor MEDIUM Note measures 13, 30 & 31 in the VOCAL line (on respiro ; on sospiro on ah! ): Schirmer marks the ornament as an appoggiatura (;) while Ricordi marks it as an acciaccatura ( ) Note measure 17 in the VOCAL line: Schirmer has left out a tie on the syllable bian (of sembianze ); I believe this to be a misprint (unintended by Schirmer) Note measure 28 in the VOCAL line (on spero ): Schirmer marks the ornament as 16 th notes (à) while Ricordi marks them as 32 nd notes (â) Piano accompaniment remains essentially the same as the Ricordi vol 2 pg 11 Giovanni Legrenzi Che fiero costume (same key as Ricordi = Schirmer MEDIUM HIGH) pg 96 Vocal line is identical to Ricordi Piano measures 6 & 22, LH ornament: Schirmer marks ornament as a 16 th note (x) while Ricordi marks an acciaccatura ( ); a cresc and f marking also added Piano measure 26: poco ten marking added Measure 27: dynamic marking p added (Ricordi has only decres marking here) Piano measure 29: Schirmer has added staccato markings to the first beat and has eliminated the rolls on the third and fourth beats vol 1 pg 9

Amelia Seyssel June 2013 Antonio Lotti pg 103 Pur dicesti, o bocca bella (same key as Ricordi = Schirmer MEDIUM) Note measures 68 71 (triplets following piacer ) in the VOCAL line: Schirmer has eliminated all text under the extended passage of triplets, changing it to a vocalize style using the last syllable of piacer ; Ricordi repeats the text che fa tutto il mio piacer through this triplets passage Note regarding the notation of ornaments in the VOCAL line: Certain Vocal line ornaments are given as optional and written in small print above the regular score: measures 6, 33, 61 63, 72, 92 93, & 104. In all cases except one, these optional ornaments match the Ricordi score. EXCEPTION is at measures 92 93 at the text con un bacio Amor t apri : the 16 th (à) note ornaments decorating the first syllable of t apri included in the Ricordi score are missing from the Schirmer score vol 1 pg 37 Benedetto Marcello Quella fiamma che m accende Schirmer does not have it available in the same pg 112 key as the Ricordi edition (G minor); the nearest Schirmer key is in A minor MEDIUM HIGH; next key down is F minor MEDIUM Essentially the same as the Ricordi version. Vocal parts are all identical to the Ricordi version. Very minor discrepancies in the piano part at: measures 12 15 small change in the RH accompaniment; measure 52 on note dropped in the RH accompaniment. vol 1 pg 63 Claudio Monteverdi Lasciatemi morire! (same key as Ricordi = Schirmer MEDIUM HIGH) pg 109 Essentially identical to Ricordi Schirmer ADDS an optional VOCAL ornament at the final measure vol 2 pg 66 Giovanni Paisello pg 120 Nel cor più non mi sento (same key as Ricordi = Schirmer MEDIUM HIGH) Identical to the Ricordi version vol 2 pg 37 presumably by Alessandro Parisotti note: Ricordi lists this composer to be Giovanni B. Pergolesi Se tu m ami (same key as Ricordi = Schirmer MEDIUM) pg 124 Identical to Ricordi (Possible misprint at measure 23: piano dynamic marking p should probably match the vocal dynamic marking of pp as it does in the Ricordi) vol 2 pg 8 Alessandro Scarlatti Già il sole dal Gange (same key as Ricordi = Schirmer MEDIUM HIGH) pg 130 No essential difference from the Ricordi version. Minor discrepancies in the articulation markings of the piano part. pg 137 pg 144 Le violette Not in the Ricordi volumes Schirmer 2008 edition is the same as the older Schirmer edition. (This is NOT the simplified edition as is found in Alfred). O cessate di piagarmi (same key as Ricordi = Schirmer MEDIUM LOW) Identical to the Ricordi version in all respects. vol 3 pg 23 vol 1 pg 17 A. Scarlatti continued next page

pg 148 Se Florindo è fedele (same key as Ricordi = Schirmer MEDIUM HIGH) Essentially identical to Ricordi Note measure 22 & 81 2 in the VOCAL line: Schirmer drops the dynamic marking p from the vocal line but retains it in the piano score; Ricordi marks both with p. This is corrected at following renditions of the same vocal line (poss. misprint) Amelia Seyssel June 2013 vol 1 pg 19 pg 156 Sento nel core (same key as Ricordi = Schirmer MEDIUM HIGH) Identical to the Ricordi version in all respects. vol 3 pg 13 Giuseppe Torelli pg 162 Tu lo sai This is not in the Ricordi edition. And is also new to the 2008 Schirmer edition; was not in the former 24 piece Schirmer edition.
