Energy Analysis Software (BPS) Most of specialists make the BEM (Building Energy Modeling) models directly in the simulation software (old school). They must start from scratch (2d drawings of photos) Almost a 30% of the time is destinated to modelling tasks. A typical Ecotect model of a two storey residence. BIM Software (Building Information Modeling) Most of BIM models are not aimed to energy analysis. BIM is still conceived as a tool that supports 3D/4D visualization, drawing/schedules generation and clash detection. So, efforts made during BIM modelling (a precise geometry of the building) have no effects in the building energy analysis. Software vendors have worked on interoperability formats but these formats are still not used massively. http://www.consortech.com
BIM (Building Information Modeling) A key aspect to do exchange are the ROOMS/ZONES functions in BIM software. Once the walls are made these functions allow to create automatically a virtual volume within the walls. Normally this ROOM/AREAS are used to compute surfaces (Building GROOS/NET AREAS). But they do have a great potential to be transformed into useful ZONES for the BPS sofware. Then saving time to the Energy consultant. Research in BIM-BPS The state of the art in this field presents: Semiautomatic methodologies to export between BIM and BPS through a IFC for Energy+, by changing GST rules to export (Bazjanac, 2005-2008); Development of interoperability between applications with emphasis on various models of buildings, including IFC and CIS/2 formats (Eastman, 2011); Procedures and workflows between Revit gbxml and Trace 700, allowing a more complete HVAC equipment transfer (Ali, 2010). Howell proposes the XML, as the protocol for the transfer of subsets or "packages" relevant project information as a key opportunity to achieve interoperability between different disciplines, such as the case of gbxml. Lobos (2011) discusses a new parametric BIM based application for early design stages, where the urban codes determines the shape of the buildings, it allows direct links to the analysis of facades performance (VIDEO).
