Conference

Dear Friends, dear Colleagues It is an honour for me and my city to have been entrusted by the Mediterranean Oncology Society (MOS) with the organization of the 10 th MOS Conference. This Conference will also celebrate the 10 th anniversary of our Association, founded in Bari in 2003 thanks to the efforts of Prof. Giuseppe Colucci. I would like therefore to thank the President, Prof Icli, and all the Board Members. I believe that the choice of the Conference subject Lung cancer and mesothelioma which recalls the very successful 2 nd Conference held in Alexandria in 2004 and hosted by Prof M. El Serafi was very appropriate. Over the last decade a number of new approaches have been developed in the molecular and morphological evaluation of lung cancer as well as in the treatment strategies. And the role of the environment and life style as a trigger factor has also become increasingly significant. The high scientific expertise of the speakers/chairpersons attending this Conference is a guarantee of success and all of us will benefit from it. Likewise we will have the chance to get to know each other better in order to bolster the activity of the MOS. Taranto is a typical Mediterranean city. Founded at the end of the 8 th century BC by Spartan exiles, it reached political and military as well as cultural significance. Its navy was one of the strongest of the area until the fatal encounter with the rising Roman power. Many of its athletes won the Olympics and commemorative vases are still kept at the local Archaeological Museum. It was rich in temples and huge structures, as the famous statue of Jupiter, as magnificent as the Colossus of Rhodes. It was seat of the renowned Pythagorean School. Nowadays, the city of two seas is a blooming industrial city (with a few difficulties!) which offers all its Mediterranean features, from its colours to the sun and the amazing food. I am certain that the City will warmly welcome you and that the Organizing Committee and Agorà will help you enjoy your breaks between the different scientific sessions. Allow me to thank all those who worked at the organization of this event, all my Colleagues at the S. Giuseppe Moscati Hospital, the Management of the Local Health Authority, the Mayor Stefàno and the President Colucci. See you soon in Taranto. Salvatore Pisconti President of the 10 th MOS Conference
