LL.M. International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights (60 ects) The Academy, a joint centre of

The LL.M. in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights provides students with a unique opportunity to follow advanced courses and seminars in all branches of international law applicable to situations of armed conflict and to grasp fully the interplay between them. The Master s degree is jointly issued by the University of Geneva and the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies. The resident faculty comprises professors from both institutions. The visiting faculty consists of professors and lectures principally from other universities, recognized for their expertise in one of the branches of international law covered in the Master s programme. In addition, experts and professionals are invited to teach short modules and to deliver lectures. The LL.M. core courses are taught in English, while optional courses and professionalizing activities are available in both English and French, exams can be taken either in English or in French. Application deadline January 2015 Application forms and the exact deadline are available on the programme s website at www.geneva-academy.ch/llm-master Tuition fees 15.000 CHF (a limited number of scholarship are available) Eligibility requirements Full degree in law or degree deemed equivalent by the Admission Committee (the degree must be received by August at the latest). High academic grades. A demonstrated interest in the subject matter of the programme (i.e., internships, summer school, conferences attended, etc.). Proficiency in English and strongly recommended passive knowledge of French (oral and written understanding) or proficiency in French and mandatory high passive knowledge of English (oral and written understanding). A solid background in public international law is strongly recommended. Curriculum Core courses: international law; international humanitarian law; human rights law; human rights law in armed conflict; international criminal law; refugee law. Specialized courses: covering subjects such as transitional justice; economic, social and cultural rights in armed conflict; counter-terrorism and the protection of human rights; the law and practice of the International Criminal Court. Clinical work on international justice and human rights. Internships with local NGOs and the Academy itself. LL.M. paper. The Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights The Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights is a joint Centre of the Law Faculty of the University of Geneva and the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies. It aims to provide instruction of a high academic standard, in French and in English, conduct academic legal research, undertake policy studies, and organize specialized training courses and expert meetings in the branches of international law applicable in times of armed conflict and other emergency situations. Resident Faculty Robert Roth, Director of the Academy and of its LL.M. Programme, is a Professor at the Law Faculty of the University of Geneva. He has been Dean of the Law Faculty from July 2003 to July 2007. Paola Gaeta, Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Geneva and Adjunct Professor at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies. Director of the Geneva Academy until 2014. Andrea Bianchi, member of the Board of the Academy, is a Professor at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies and Head of the Department of International Law. Nicolas Michel, member President of the Board of the Academy, is a Professor at the law Faculty of the University of Geneva nd Adjunct Professor at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies. Andrew Clapham, Professor at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies. Director of the Geneva Academy until 2014. Vincent Chetail, member of the Board of the Academy, is Professor at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies. He was Director of the Academy s Research Programme until 2011. Marco Sassòli is a Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Geneva and Director of the Department of International Law and International Organizations of the same Faculty. He chaired the Board of the Academy until 2008.

The University of Geneva and the Law Faculty The University of Geneva founded by Jean Calvin in 1559 is Switzerland s second-largest university. It was ranked number one generalist university in continental Europe by Newsweek s Top 100 Global Universities in 2006 and is a member of the League of European Research Universities. The Law Faculty has an ongoing student and professor exchange programme with Harvard Law School and is also part of the Strategic Alliance of Research Faculties of Law, together with twelve other prestigious European Law Schools. The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies Born of the 2008 merger of the Graduate Institute of International Studies (HEl) and the Graduate Institute of Development Studies (IUED), the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies benefits from an expertise and a reputation that go back as far as the 1920s, and the League of Nations, in the case of international relations, and the 1960s, and the post-colonial era and the emergence of the Third World, in the case of development studies. The Institute s mission is to provide an independent and rigorous analysis of major contemporary and emerging world issues, with a particular concern for promoting international cooperation.
