WOLVERINE TOWER BUILDING INCIDENT RESPONSE TEAM (BIRT) MEMBER RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Each floor must have at least one BIRT member and an alternate. 2. Names, phone numbers and changes of BIRT members should be provided to the Building Manager at WTBldgMgr@umich.edu. 3. Announcements pertaining to the building will be emailed to BIRT members. Please forward the information to all staff on your floor. 4. If you have a building issue/emergency please contact WTBldgMgr@umich.edu. If you have a problem affecting only your floor or part of your floor please report it to the Plant Operations Call Center (POCC) at 7-2059. 5. Theft/Strangers: Any incident of theft, or staff noticing strangers acting suspiciously in the building, should be reported to DPSS immediately. BIRT members should then inform the Building Manager, who will immediately notify all WT BIRT members of the incident via email. 6. Each BIRT member should provide every staff member in their area with a map showing fire and tornado exit routes and meeting locations once the building has been evacuated. The BIRT member should instruct all occupants to move to their designated areas; at least 150 feet from the building. 7. BIRT members should instruct all staff members of the location of the fire alarm pull boxes, fire extinguishers and multiple exits on the floor. 8. Create a check-in and check-out system in your office so employees can be accounted for in case of an emergency. 9. Each department should consider purchasing flashlights and a portable batteryoperated radio. 10. Each department should conduct regular meetings to review emergency procedures, location of fire extinguishers, exits, and fire pull alarms. A training session should be conducted for all new employees. 11. After any drills, the floor coordinator should review with staff any problems or procedures that need attention. 12. BIRT FIRE If a BIRT Member becomes aware of a fire he/she should: Activate the building fire alarm system (Pull station) if not already done Call 911 and report the incident immediately 15
BIRT FIRE Check pre-assigned areas and Areas of Rescue Assistance (also check after All Clear ) Close office doors while evacuating Make notification of persons in Areas of Rescue Assistance Advise people not to re-enter the building until All Clear. INCIDENT FOLLOW-UP Sample Email At 10:04 AM, the fire alarm was activated. The BIRT assisted with evacuation and restricting building access until UMPD arrived. UMPD was able to determine the alarm was caused by contractors on the third floor doing dry wall work. UMPD reset the system, and BIRT allowed re-entry at 10:23 AM.
