Address: 5757 Woodlawn Avenue, Chicago, IL Telephone : RULES FOR ALL VISITORS Backpacks, bags, parcels, and cameras must be checked before entering the museum. BE CERTAIN ALL DOORS ARE CLOSED SECURELY ROBIE HOUSE EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLAN The following pages indicate the Emergency Response Plan. It is similar to the flip chart posted at all telephones in Robie House. Please be familiar with the contents so you may assist others should an emergency occur. 2 Emergency Telephone Numbers/Extensions University of Chicago Emergency Fire and Police Services.... Dial 123 Museum Shop Daily Operations Manager Guest Relations Many emergencies can be prevented by a careful inspection of your area each day and by reporting possible problems to the daily operations manager and other staff. In the event that you see or are informed of an emergency, please stay calm and follow the instructions below. Be aware of the locations of the Hand Pull Alarm Stations in the bookshop and the playroom. Pull the Lever to activate the alarm. Ground Floor
3 Main Floor Third Floor EVACUATION PROCEDURE In advance, each staff person and volunteer should: 1. Understand this evacuation plan. 2. Recognize the sound of the fire alarm. 3. Know at least two ways to exit the building from your regular workspace.
4 FIRE ALARM When you hear the fire alarm and are told to evacuate the building or make the decision on your own: 2. Instruct visitors to leave the building in an orderly fashion and point to the EXIT to use. Keep your group together. 3. Leave quickly. As you leave, check nearby restrooms, copier rooms, closets, etc. 4. Accompany and assist handicapped personnel, visitors, and any coworker who appears to need calm direction or assistance. 5. People safety first. Do not attempt to take large or heavy objects. 6. Shut all doors behind you as you go. Closed doors can slow the spread of fire, smoke, and water. 7. Proceed as quickly as possible, but in an orderly manner. Do not push or shove. Instruct everyone to hold handrails when walking on the stairs. 8. Once out of the building, gather in the little park at the south west corner of 58th and Woodlawn Avenue. Keep your group together. Allow NO VISITORS to enter or re-enter Robie House for any reason until further instruction s have been given. VIOLENT STORM If a violent storm with thunder, lightning, high winds, a tornado, or heavy snow occurs: Call Museum Shop staff on your walkie-talkie for instructions. 2. If a tornado or high wind warning has been announced, move carefully with your group to the corridor between the rooms. A weather radio is behind the desk in the bookshop; emergency flashlights are located in the bookshop, boiler room, and the servants dining room. 3. Stay away from glass doors and windows. 4. Listen to the battery - powered radio for an all - clear signal. POWER OUTAGE If an electrical power loss occurs: 2. If you are in an unlighted area, proceed cautiously to a doorway with outside light. 3. Be mindful of public safety and the security of the collection. Do not give tours; only answer questions at this time. Do not go into darkened areas, or up or down stairs. 4. Notify Museum Shop staff on your walkie-talkie if the power outage is in your area only or if there is an emergency. Give your location and problem. They will get help to your area. 5. Stand by for instructions from a staff member. If instructed to evacuate the museum, proceed to the designated areas.
5 VIOLENT PERSONS Violent Persons: If you or a visitor is or feels threatened by another person, or an art work or museum object is threatened with damage by a visitor: staff in you r immediate area. 2. Self - preservation before historic preservation. 3. When possible, call Museum Shop staff on your walkie-talkie. Give your location and the problem. They will get help to your area. Evacuate visitors and yourself from the area where the troubled person is located. FLOODING AND WATER DAMAGE Serious water damage can occur from numerous sources: burst pipes, open taps, clogged drains, broken skylights or windows, or construction oversights. If a water leak occurs: 2. Notify Museum Shop staff via walkie-talkie immediately. Advise them of exact location and severity of the leak. Indicate whether any part of the collection is involved or is in imminent danger. Staff will notify the appropriate people. 3. If there are electrical appliances or electrical outlets near the leak, use extreme caution. If there is any possible danger, evacuate the area. 4. If you know the source of the water and are confident of your ability to stop it (i.e., by unclogging the drain, turning off water tap or intake pipe, etc.), do so cautiously. 5. Be prepared to assist as directed in protecting art objects that are in jeopardy. Take only essential steps to avoid or reduce immediate water damage: cover large objects with plastic sheeting found in the wine cellar; carefully move small or light objects out of the emergency area.
