2011 Annul Sttistics on Socil Work Eduction in the United Sttes Council on Socil Work Eduction The Annul Survey of Socil Work Progrms (Annul Survey) is census of ccredited socil work progrms in the United Sttes nd its territories, conducted by the Council on Socil Work Eduction (CSWE) since 1952. Dt collected in the online Annul Survey re the primry source of informtion bout socil work students, grdutes, nd fculty members. In ddition to dvncing knowledge bout socil work eduction, the dt re used to determine progrm membership dues for ccredited bcclurete nd mster s progrms. Introduction Methodology The 2011 Annul Survey ws composed of four instruments: bcclurete progrms, mster s progrms, doctorl progrms, nd fculty. The progrm instruments included sections on progrm structure, enrollments, progrm offerings, nd degrees wrded. The fculty instrument collected demogrphic informtion nd informtion bout cdemic rnk nd dministrtive title for full-time nd prt-time fculty members; it lso requested informtion bout tenure sttus nd professionl licensing of full-time fculty members. The instruments were dministered online through the survey pltform, Zrc Interctive. On November 18, 2011, survey invittions were e-miled to ll CSWE-ccredited socil work progrms nd to doctorl socil work progrms tht were members of the Group for the Advncement of Doctorl Eduction (GADE). The 2011 survey closed in Mrch 2012. Truncted text of the questions is used in most of this report to conserve spce. The complete text of the survey instruments is vilble on the CSWE website (http://www.cswe.org/centersinititives/dtsttistics/annulsurvey.spx). When reporting proportionl demogrphic distributions by gender, the number of respondents in the ctegory of Unknown Gender is omitted from computtion. When reporting proportionl demogrphic distributions by ge group, the totl number of respondents is used, including those respondents in the ctegory of Unknown Age. When reporting historiclly underrepresented respondents, the ctegories of Africn Americn/Other Blck, Chicno/Mexicn Americn, Puerto Ricn, Other Ltino/Hispnic, Americn Indin/Ntive Americn, Asin Americn/Other Asin, Pcific Islnder, nd Other re used. Prticiption nd Response Rtes At the time of survey dministrtion, there were 472 bcclurete nd 213 mster s socil work progrms ccredited by CSWE, nd 71 doctorl socil work progrms tht were members of GADE. Overll, the prticiption rtes for the different progrm instruments of the 2011 Annul Survey were higher thn in 2010. Mster s progrms hd the highest prticiption rte. Tble 1. Prticiption in the Annul Survey ws voluntry; moreover, progrms were not required to respond to most items in their submitted surveys. In the survey instruments for bcclurete nd mster s progrms, progrms were only required to respond to the questions bout totl number of degrees wrded nd prticiption in the benchmrking inititive. In the survey instrument for doctorl progrms, progrms were required to respond to one question (prticiption in the benchmrking inititive). Full-Time nd Prt-Time Fculty Number of Fculty In 2011 the fculty section of the Annul Survey ws modified. In the pst, individulized informtion ws collected bout ech fculty member. Progrms filled out seprte form for ech fculty member every yer. In 2007 the process chnged to collect individulized informtion on full-time fculty members but only ggregte informtion on prt-time fculty members. In 2011 the process chnged gin to collect only ggregte informtion bout full-time nd prt-time fculty members. The CSWE Commission on Reserch is considering other methods to survey fculty members directly. In this inugurl yer of the revised Fculty survey instrument, 426 institutions (80.2%) provided informtion bout 4,730 full-time nd 5,095 prt-time fculty members. Full-time referred to fculty who spent 50% or more of full-time employment (FTE) in socil work eduction.
