Friday February 6, 2015 R2.00 incl 015 793 0560 MARULENG: WILDLIFE HAVEN Protests block R40 THE R40 road in Bushbuckridge has been blocked by local villagers who demand that a tar road be erected from Ramalema Village to Zanthia. The residents accused the government of not delivering services like they promised to do before the elections. On Wednesday morning Bushbuckridge police spokesperson Lieutenant Ndlovukazi Mashele said that traffic was flowing but the protesters were also on the scene. Police force has been dispatched to the scene to keep the situation under control and make sure that the residents don t become violent, said Mashele. The road blockage has affected the school learners in the area and surroundings as they are banned from going to school by the protesters. The working class and tourists passing through the road were not spared as protesters used a rubbish tipper, big rocks and other debris to barricade the road. The residents started to block the road last Tuesday and they vowed to keeping on blocking the R40 until they get the government s attention. Bushbuckridge municipal spokesperson Maria Masuku said that the community members who are striking should not have embarked on the protest in the first place. The issue of tar road as been addressed long ago and the Department of Public Works and Transport have already started erecting a tar road which will pass through their area, she says. The problem with community members is that when they have a problem they don t come to the municipality to report it. They prefer to strike which turn to an inconvenience other people who are not part of our area, said Masuku. Masuku said that residents must stop protesting for service delivery and contact the municipality if they have problem so the problem can be solved quickkly and efficiently. She apologised to all motorists that have been affected by this road blockage. Department of Public Works and POLICE ACTION: Police presence during a previous service delivery strike. File photo. Daar is baie ander. IN OUR OPINION... When children have to fend for themselves and their siblings aōer their parents pass away they are exposed to many dangers. Some, especially young girls, are sexually abused by older men taking advantage of the situaɵon, some are forced into child labour to try and put food on the table for themselves and their siblings, and for some the situaɵon becomes too much to bear leading them down the destrucɵve path of substance abuse, prosɵtuɵon and criminality. In this country, HIV / AIDS as well as economic migraɵon are amongst the reasons there is a high number of child-headed families. Some of the social challenges the young people are confronted with, include the lack of job opportuniɵes, poor social infrastructure such sports faciliɵes, skills centres which lead to high levels of alcohol and drug abuse, as well as a high rate of teenage pregnancy, to name a few. 4 COMMUNITY HOEDSPRUIT HERALD Friday February 6, 2015 FIRST TASTE: Bavaria Fruit Estate General Manager Johan du Preez giving Tess Britz an NDM4 mango to taste. MANGO MANIA: Different mangoes were on display and people could taste the variety available during the mango mania last Saturday. Successful mango mania THE annual Bavaria Mango Mania was a great success with more than 200 people flocking to the farm last Saturday to pick their own fresh mangoes. People were treated to different varieties of mango with most quickly finding a favourite. We have 84 types of mangoes here in Bavaria which ripen during different times from December until March. The mango mania is a chance for people to pick their own fruit as some of the people have never picked a mango on the orchard before, said Bavaria Fruit Estate General Manager Johan du Preez. Du Preez explained to people who went to the mango mania about the types of mangoes they have and how can one identify them when they re ripe and also which ones are sweeter. He said that mangoes without a seed ripen earlier than the seeded mangoes. People were showing interest in what they have been taught and most people tasted more than five varieties before they headed to the orchard to pick their favourite mango. Tess Britz, one of the people who attended mango mania said that she has not eaten a mango in the last 40 years. I have not eaten a mango almost for my whole life. I was invited to come to the mango mania and I found a mango that I like, said Britz. Some of the mangoes that people got to taste last Saturday included; Shelly, Parvia, Joa, Keith, Anderson and Amelie. This adventure moment of picking one s own favourite mango or a variety of mangoes only needed a small entrance fee of R20.00 which included a tractor ride to the orchards. Already harvested fruit was also available for those who did not want to go into the orchard. The following products were also available on the day; dried mango, juice, fresh cuts, mango smoothies and Hlokomela herbs. Join in the excitement of picking your own mangoes on February 28. For more information contact Bavaria Fruit Estate on 015 795 5380.
Share love by donating blood FEBRUARY is the exciting month of love with Valentine s coming up and all around us is advertising of what you can do to show your how much you love and appreciate the one you are with. It can also be a time to show your love to those you may never meet by donating blood and making a difference to the lives of others. says Vanessa Raju, Communications Manager, SANBS. January blood stock levels seemed to have dropped to less than one day in some provinces with the national average of two days for most of the month. We need the public to join the blood donation community and start donating a minimum of four times a year. February is also the month dedicated to Healthy Lifestyles Awareness. Reports show that in the past five years, there has been, a growing number of people diagnosed with heart disease, cancer and various other health-related illnesses. Lifestyle diseases are triggered by our unhealthy lifestyle choices such as: Smoking, being overweight, indulging in an unhealthy diet filled with fatty foods and limited fruits and vegetables, limited physical activity, high stress levels. SANBS supports Healthy Lifestyle Awareness Month and encourages South Africans to start paying attention to problem areas in their health, go for regular medical check-ups and control their stress levels. Raju says, Stress has a significant impact on lifestyle illnesses. People need to make time for regular exercise, spend time doing things they enjoy, learn some relaxation techniques and just some time to relax. Although the silent killers can be prevented, for the already diagnosed, successful treatment is a debilitating matter of life and death. The treatment of the majority of these diseases requires blood transfusions. The increase in affected patients means an increased demand for blood donations. People who meet the minimum requirements are encouraged to become regular blood donors. Contact 0800 11 9031 www.sanbs.org. za Facebook.com/SANBS Twitter @ thesanbs to find the nearest donor centre.

This year it was SCC s turn to host the event. This is obviously easier said than done given the fact that Hoedspruit is a good 230km from Polokwane. In addition, SCC is by far the smallest school by enrolment of any of the participating schools. Despite these challenges, the school presented a well organised, top quality event at which the athletes were given every opportunity of excelling. The SCC athletics team did particularly well on the day, especially when one considers that the school was competing against much bigger schools. With six first places, eleven second places and ten third places, the SCC athletes accumulated enough points to finish fifth out of the eleven participating schools. The top achievers from SCC included Naeem Razak who accumulated the highest number of ABSA points at the meeting, making him the top performing senior boy athlete of the day. He won the 110m hurdles in a record time and he achieved 2nd place in both 100m and 200m. Alex Giles achieved a 1st place in shot put, a 2nd in triple jump and a 3rd in javelin. Brian Mangena won the 1500m, got 2nd in 800m and 3rd in 300m hurdles. Michaela Naudé achieved 1st place in javelin, 4th in long jump and 4th in 100m. Troy Nxumalo achieved a 1st place in discus and Hannah du Plessis achieved a 1st place in shot put. Morgan Wheeldon came 2nd in the 100m, 200m and long jump. Some outstanding results were achieved against tough opposition.
