Preface Kenric M. Murayama, MD Obesity is a major public health issue and has moved from a disease on the periphery to one that is approaching epidemic proportions. The burden of obesity on our healthcare system is difficult to accurately estimate, but the economic impact resulting from the medical and psychosocial issues is burgeoning. One important result of the increased interest and attention obesity is receiving is the development of new treatment options and research endeavors. In this text, the expert group of authors has presented comprehensive reviews of a number of critical discussion points related to obesity including a discussion of the obesity-related health issues, a history of bariatric surgery, nutrition issues after bariatric surgery, and the metabolic impact of bariatric surgery. The text is intended to provide the reader with both a comprehensive overview of the management of obesity and quick reviews of specific topics in obesity care. vii
