Our Institution gathers students and specialist from various fields of specialisation including exclusively such scientific specialisations as chemistry, biotechnology or natural sciences as well as wide selection of courses offered by philologies, humanities and social sciences. Our University has over sixty year of academic history first as the Higher Pedagogical College and the Theological-Pastoral Institute in Opole, which merged in 1994 and Opole University was founded. The University Campus consists of numerous buildings which are located around the centre of our beautiful city. Information on the Institution Opole University was founded on the strength of the Act of 10 th of March 1994, passed by the Seym of the Republic of Poland. Opole University is a dynamically developing academic centre. In 1994 it began its activity offering courses at four independent departments and now there are eight of them: Faculty of Philology, Faculty of History and Pedagogy, Faculty of Theology, Faculty of Chemistry, Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Information Science, Faculty of Natural and Technical Sciences, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Law and Administration. On average 16 000 students study at OU doing approximately (as the number still changes due to our extending the academic offer) 39 majors, 28 minors and 10 doctoral courses in various specialisations. Research, scholarship programmes and creative activities promote development through the international cooperation and knowledge application in the natural and applied sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities. Opole University is developing international cooperation within over 90 agreements with universities and institutions from, among others: the USA, Germany, Great Britain, France, Russia, Ukraine, Sweden, Finland, Italy, Hungary, Australia, Slovakia. As well as the members of research staff, students participate in exchange programmes, take part in various seminars and conferences. The system is used as well for full-cycle students as those coming for short-term mobility. Both learning outcomes and requirements are available in syllabi for each subject and also in the curricula for separate programmes/specialisations. The curriculum is first accepted by the Faculty Council and finally by the Vice-Rector for teaching and students. Students are awarded ECTS points for each subject at the end of the semester points are accumulated. The number of ECTS points needed for completing each semester is 30. In order to qualify to a diploma exam, the student has to gain 180 ECTS points for a Bachelor degree and 120
ECTS for a Master degree. Assignation of points to each subject and course is based on estimated workload that each student has to do in order to reach defined learning outcomes. The workload includes not only the number of regular classes but also time needed to prepare for the them. Primarily estimated by teachers, the workload is in the course of studies verified based on questionnaires and individual consultations. Franciscans housing a monument of exquisite value the Piasts Chapel serving as the mausoleum of the Piast Dynasty of Opole. The attention of those strolling around the Market Square will be drawn by the eye-catching silhouette of the Town Hall in the architectural style of Florentine Palazzo Vecchio. At midday the bugle call of Opole can be heard from it played to the melody of the Opole anthem. The Market Square is vibrant with life: tourists willingly take a rest in the open air cafes installed there in the spring and summer, admiring the renovated tenement houses around them. In Daszyński Square there is the extraordinary Ceres of Opole a beautiful sculpturefountain consisting of a number of figures. Piastowska Tower the only remnant of the medieval castle offers a wide panorama of the city: sites at the near and further distance are within the eye s reach, including the Church on the Hill, the building of the Museum of Opole Silesia, the monument of Nike of Opole, the seat of the University of Opole, located on the so-called University Hill, and the picturesque corner on the Młynówka Canal, that is the Venice of Opole, as well as the green Bolko Island. Accommodation Opole University offers accommodation in its students halls of residence ( Niechcic and Kmicic ) located in the University campus, close to the centre of the city, on Katowicka and Grunwaldzka Street. We offer places in modules, which consist of one double and one triple room, shared bathroom and kitchen at the price of approximately 350 PLN (about 90 ) per month. The rooms are furnished with beds, chairs, tables, wardrobes; the kitchen is equipped with fridge and oven. There is also an Internet connection and a cable TV connection available in each room. There are free washing facilities available on each floor. We cannot offer single rooms. Students are accommodated in double and three-person rooms.

During a temporary stay in Poland, a person entitled to health care under EEA rules can receive health services in the following areas: primary health care specialist out-patient care hospital treatment rescue services and ambulance transport In case of necessity of providing medical care, a student from a member country staying temporarily in the territory of Poland is entitled to free health care on the basis of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The student is obliged to present this document together with an identity document directly to the public health care provider. The student will receive free health services at health care providers who have concluded a relevant contract with the National Health Fund.
In case of lack of the European Health Insurance Card or equivalent document, the patient will be obliged to cover costs of treatment by himself. The same obligation arises in case of treatment provided by a health care unit which has no contract with NFZ. Students holding the European Health Card are admitted to the doctor free of charge, while those without the Card pay the fee for visit directly with the specialist. The health centre issues a relevant invoice for each visit, on the basis of which the student may expect a refund from their insurance agency. If there is a need of hospital treatment, a doctor s referral is required. In case of sudden illness, accident, injury, intoxication, life threat, a patient receives necessary medical benefits without referral. A patient who presented the European Health Insurance Card or a certificate, receives free hospital treatment within the general health care system. Apart from academic and public medical care system, there is also a well-developed private sector. The costs of medical care may be reimbursed of a student has purchased a health insurance policy in his country before departure. An EU citizen can enter Poland with his/her ID document (a valid travel document e.g. passport, or another document certifying his/her identity and citizenship). For stay up to 3 months no legalisation of stay will be necessary. For stays exceeding 3 months, an EU citizen will have to obtain a temporary residence permit (Karta pobytu obywatela UE). In case of students, the residence permit is issued for one year. The residence permit once issued will also entitle its bearer to take up work. The residence permit and the right to work also extends to the immediate family i.e. spouse or children. This document will be issued by the Department of Citizens Affairs of the Voivodeship Office (province administration, in Polish Urzad Wojewodzki). Temporary residence permits will be granted to Union citizens who have health insurance and sufficient resources to cover their expenses without needing social security support. Documents that have to be submitted by the student to the Voivodeship Office in order to obtain the residence permit: copy of the travel document (passport or other ID document) health insurance document official letter of acceptance from the Polish university (with information about the planned period of study) declaration about sufficient resources to cover the subsistence costs in Poland 2 photographs Application Form (in Polish Wniosek o zezwolenie na pobyt) Polish students-mentors will assist the visiting students in filling up the above mentioned application (the application can be made in the Polish, English or German version). Non-EU/EEA citizens A citizen of a non-eu/eea country can enter the territory of Poland on the basis of a valid travel document (passport) and a visa (if required). A citizen of a non-eu country has to obtain the visa from the consulate of Poland in his/her country of residence. The short-term visa entitles to stay in Poland up to 3 months, the long-term visa up to 1 year. The prolongation of visa in Poland is only possible in case of force majeure or situation impossible to foresee while applying for the visa at the consulate. The visa can be prolonged only once.
