1 SCUOLA DI SCIENZE POLITICHE VICEPRESIDENZA DI BOLOGNA Application to the Second Cycle Degree in INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS RILM (8782) Class of second cycle degree LM 52 Academic Year /16 The second cycle degree programme in International Relations is a free access degree programme with assessment of personal academic qualification, that is to say that the programme does not set a maximum number of admitted students, except for non EU foreign citizens 1. The programme has three curricula: Relazioni Internazionali 2, European Affairs and International Affairs. From the a.y. /16 the curricula European Affairs and International Affairs have been awarded as international: lectures are entirely held in English and specific courses and services of welcoming, orienteering and support are dedicated to students enrolled in these curricula. Only for these two curricula, the total amount of tuition fee is euros more than the basic tuition fee of the programme, as established by Academic rules. Foreign students who apply for one of the international curricula can benefit from a limited number of exemptions from tuition fee (Unibo Action 1). Check the exact number of exemptions and the requirements at the following link: ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS and ASSESSMENT INTAKES Three assessment s are scheduled but you can only apply to one. To be admitted to the programme you must: 1) hold a first cycle degree or other suitable qualification obtained abroad in one of the following subject areas: anthropology, communication, culture, demography, economics, philosophy, geopolitics, law, 1 The maximum number of available places for non EU foreign students residing abroad for the academic year /16 is 15 (10 for non EU foreign citizens; 5 for Chinese citizens as part of the Marco Polo Project). Non EU foreign citizens residing abroad shall also comply with the terms and procedures to enroll in Italian Universities which are annually established by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) available at 2 Foreign applicants willing to enroll in the curriculum Relazioni Internazionali will also have to prove their adequate proficiency in the Italian language passing the exam scheduled at the beginning of September (date and place will be published on the website of the School of Political Sciences and of the degree programme). If they fail or miss the exam, they can only enroll in the international curricula European Affairs and International Affairs, where all activities are completely held in English, even if they are assessed as eligible by the Admission Board. 1

If at the deadline for application you have not yet graduated, you can apply to the assessment as a graduand and, if successful, you can enroll according to the specified deadlines and then complete the enrollment procedure once graduated, in any case within December 30 th. There are no additional assessment s than those indicated in this call for application. If you hold a first cycle degree in a subject area different from those mentioned above, the Admission Board will examine your curriculum vitae ac studiorum and if necessary will ask you to undergo a pre-interview. You will be contacted by to arrange the date of the pre-interview, that can coincide with the dates scheduled for the assessment interview. 2) have knowledge of the English language at least at B2 level, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, to be certified in one of the following ways: - international certifications: - IELTS Cambridge FCE - Trinity GESE 8 - TOEFL IBT 79 - TOEFL paper TOEFL computer-based Trinity ISE integrated Skills II - language certification (Level B2) issued by a University Linguistic Centre; - having gained at least 10 ECTs, including workshops and/or laboratory activities, in the subject area L-LIN/12 with an average grade of at least of 24/30; - a period of at least 3 months of study abroad (Erasmus, Overseas or equivalent) in an Englishspeaking University; - an internship of at least 3 months in an English-speaking country; - hold a first cycle degree awarded by an English-speaking University; - hold a first cycle degree entirely taught in English; - being English as mother-tongue. If you do not hold an adequate certification of English language proficiency of at least B2 level, you must take and pass the B2 level English test scheduled in the same day of the interview (see Application Schedule pag. 3). 3 If you miss or fail the English test you will be excluded from the admission. 4 3) have adequate personal competence and skills. The Admission Board will evaluate applications on the basis of: - (self) certification of taken exams including marks, ECTs and Subject Areas and of the degree qualification with final grade (if already gained), along with any other certificate that you want the Admission Board to evaluate; - detailed curriculum vitae ac studiorum; - statement of purpose, explaining why you are interested in this programme and describing your personal and professional objectives. You are also required to indicate and motivate your NON-binding preference for one of the three curricula. Candidates will be assessed as follows: - up to 60 points: evaluation of the academic career; - up to 20 points: statement of purpose (maximum length 1.5/2 pages); - up to 20 points: consistency of the career with the degree programme. 3 The English test taken at the University Linguistic Centre does not provide any certificate. Results will be communicated by the Linguistic Centre directly to the Admission Board. 2

3 The final scores are shown in cents. Applicants who obtain: - from 70 to 100 points, will be considered eligible and can enroll; - from 55 to 69 points, will be asked to undergo an interview; - from 0 to 54 points, will be considered non-eligible. The interview 5 is aimed to examine the following topics: - the reasons of your choice - your general attitude and previous knowledge about the objectives of the course, and it will lead to an evaluation of eligibility or non-eligibility for admission to the programme. If you are asked to undergo the interview and you miss it, you will be evaluated as non-eligible for the degree programme. AGREEMENT BETWEEN BOLOGNA UNIVERSITY and THE JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY BOLOGNA CENTER If you obtained the Diploma in International Studies from the Johns Hopkins University Bologna Center you are considered as fulfilling the admission requirements stated at points 1, 2 and 3 (Admission Requirements and Assessment s). Anuway you have to apply to one of the three s in order to be evaluated on the basis of the following criteria: - if you obtained the Diploma in International Studies with an average grade higher than or equal to B, you will be considered as eligible and you can enroll; - if you obtained the Diploma in International Studies with an average grade lower than B, you will be asked to undergo the interview. APPLICATION SCHEDULE FIRST SECOND THIRD Opening of applications March 31, May 5, July 1, Closing of applications May 4, June 30, August 28, Results of the assessment, with list of applicants: - eligible - who must undergo the interview - non-eligible - suspended for not fulfilling one or more admission requirement(s) (the results of the assessment will be communicated after the English test and/or the pre-interview) Interview* Depending on the number of summoned applicants, interviews may continue on the following days. In this case the schedule will be published along with the results of the assessment. *Time and place of the interview will be communicated later May 12, July 13, May 21, July 17, September 8, September 14, 5 In order to facilitate foreign applicants participation and only for justified reasons (upon request to be sent by to the Unità di Servizio Didattico spbo.didattica@unibo.it within the application deadline), the Admission Board may arrange a phone or Skype interview or settle the interview in foreign Universities having an agreement with the University of Bologna. 3

ON-LINE APPLICATION PROCEDURE To register to the assessment you must: 1. Connect to and create your personal User ID and Password by clicking on Se non sei ancora registrato (if you already have an account, you can skip to point 4). 2. Register by filling in the form (if you are a foreign student and you don t have an Italian Tax ID - codice fiscale, you can click on Registrazione Studenti Internazionali and follow the instructions to create your personal User ID and Password). 3. After your first access you will be asked to change your password. Please remember your ID and Password as they will be always required to access your personal profile. 4. Click on Prove di Ammissione. 5. Select Laurea Magistrale and then procedi. 6. Select the programme "RELAZIONI INTERNAZIONALI - RILM (you can register only to the available at the moment of your access see Application schedule). 7. Upload all the required documents: a. Photocopy of a valid Passport or identity card; b. Transcript of records: list of exams with grades, ECTs and subject areas, final grade (if already graduated) If you graduated or are going to graduate at Bologna University, you can upload the self-certification available on Studenti online service or the request by which you charge the Secretariat with providing the required information. 4

5 In case of foreign degree, you have to upload your diploma and the transcript of records issued by the attended University, in original or certified copy; EU applicants can upload their Diploma supplement or a self-certification with the list of exams. To proceed with the enrollment, you will be also required to submit a legalized and officially translated version of your qualification and the Declaration of Value or the Diploma Supplement. c. Curriculum Vitae ac Studiorum (European format); d. Certificate or other documentation of English proficiency at B2 level or above if held; e. Statement of purpose (max 1.5/2 pages); f. Application form (attached); g. For foreign and non-eu citizens: copy of a valid visa or residence permit if already held.
