Generation Future: Emission-free electric driving. Driving a vehicle on plug-in energy is tremendous fun and so the popularity of electric drive systems continues to grow. Many of the models of our brands Mercedes-Benz, smart, Fuso and Freightliner already run on electricity. Fully electric and eco-friendly. With the broadest range of alternative drive systems around, for both passenger cars and commercial vehicles, Daimler is truly setting the pace when it comes to emission-free driving. www.daimler.com www.daimler.mobi

MESSAGES 5 As we slide into 2013, the economic challenges we faced last year remain with us. The international trading environment remains a difficult place but, as always, the opportunities are there for the right companies with the right products. And despite the allure of the developing markets, Germany, the second most important export market for UK companies and our second largest source of inward investment, will remain inextricably linked to economic growth at home. Our Government is more determined than ever to keep trade and investment at the heart of its work. Indeed our Prime Minister David Cameron has set us a clear and ambitious aim to double exports to 1tr and to double the level of inward investment into the UK by 2020. The driving force behind this will be the work of UK Trade and Investment, an organisation you know well. But this is not just about one department, this is about the work of the whole of Government. This means Ministers from every department supporting UK business while abroad our Foreign Secretary William Hague s launch of the new Fourth Generation Range Rover in Berlin last year being a great example. This means our Ambassadors and other diplomatic staff around the world supporting business wherever we can. In 2012, both my Embassy and Residence were put to use more than ever before for this purpose we launched the new Jaguar, supported the new James Bond film as well as, among others, helping security companies, pharmaceutical analytics companies and British Telecom in their role as Olympic sponsors. I expect this to continue in the coming year as more companies realise the value of working closely with the Foreign Office to support their endeavours overseas and we use the considerable outreach of our Embassy network to send the message to the German business community that the UK is open for business. Simon McDonald CMG, HM Ambassador, Berlin But in order to meet these ambitious targets, the effort needs to come from more than just Government. We are increasingly looking to work with partners both at home and overseas to help British business succeed and encourage overseas investors to look to the UK. These partners include organisations like the CBI, it includes organisations such as banks and consultancy firms and it certainly includes chambers of commerce. There is a lot of work being done to ensure the UK colleagues are joining up better with chambers and we are being asked to do the same here too. Fortunately we already have a strong chamber in Germany and a strong relationship with that chamber. I know many of you know, and have worked successfully with, Malcolm Scott, Dan Rutstein, Paul Heardman and their UKTI teams and I would urge more of the same in 2013. I know there are joint events already in the planning, I know there are contacts already being shared and I know that BCCG members always stand ready to help us promote positive messages about the UK economy. But that doesn t mean there isn t more than can we do together UKTI and the Chamber are two organisations with a shared objective and a central role in the commercial relationship between our countries. I am glad to see the Chamber thriving and I am keen that we maintain our close working relationship in 2013. Simon McDonald CMG, HM Ambassador, Berlin LOOK OUT THIS YEAR ACROSS GERMANY FOR THE GREAT MINI. Over the 12 months you will see this vehicle, a perfect example of a UK export which is also the result of a German investment, at events in all 16 Länder. It will be at Trade Fairs, visiting British companies and German investors, carrying celebrities, attending sporting events and being pictured at Germany s iconic sights. It s touring the country to promote GREAT, a global campaign to showcase the very best of what Britain has to offer. The aim is to encourage the world to visit, study and do business with the UK

6 MESSAGES Dear Members and Friends of BCCG, The year 2012 was another year of continuing euro crisis. Despite this economically difficult environment, growth of BCCG membership was positive, with over 146 new members, including 6 new sustaining members. We are grateful for this development which shows further interest in the BCCG network. The overall outlook for 2013 has also improved recently, as the effects of some political decisions are resulting in better economic data in some European countries. In 2012, the BCCG regional committees and our management team organised many high-quality networking events, especially conferences in Berlin, Cologne, Dresden, Hamburg, Frankfurt, London, Düsseldorf, Munich and Stuttgart, as well as our successful AGM in Stuttgart. We are grateful to all for their contributions. Norbert Strohschen, President This issue of the BCCG Yearbook 2013 / 2014 contains the updated lists of BCCG members and various articles relating to Europe and the future of the Euro, Federal Bonds, special barriers in Germany for Intragroup Financing, effects of agreement on tariffs to the temporary employment, the Opel Ampera and such high-calibre regional events as the HR Conference in Cologne, the Gala Dinner in Düsseldorf with Lord Green of Hurstpierpoint, the Real Estate Conference with Dr. h.c. Wolfgang Clement in Berlin and the Symposium in Dresden with Greg Hands, M.P. The BCCG Yearbook 2013 is also available as an interactive version on the members exclusive access pages on the BCCG website. All advertisements are also listed on our website for interactive viewing. The year 2013 will mark the 30th anniversary of the BCCG Foundation, our independent organisation supporting student exchange between the UK and Germany. We would like to take this opportunity to kindly ask all our readers to contribute to the foundation with any amount they can afford. Also, we thank all honorary committee members of the foundation for their continued support. To find out more about the BCCG Foundation and the scholarships granted in 2012, please read pages 16 to 22. Andreas Meyer-Schwickerath, Director This yearbook also contains yet again a number of articles from notable members such as the Regional Committee Berlin/Brandenburg, Simon und Partner, Oppenhoff und Partner, I. K. Hofmann GmbH, Adam Opel AG, the Regional Committee NRW, Dr. Windel und Partner GmbH, OLSWANG Germany LLP, Die Welt and ROXEM assets gmbh. We are grateful for all contributions by our members, as they provide our members and readers with interesting topics. The BCCG newsletter will be published in two editions, the next issue being due in May and the autumn edition in November 2013. These publications will also be available in an interactive electronic format (flip book) on the BCCG website. In addition, the BCCG e-news Update will continue to be a main source of communication with almost 4,000 personal addressees of our members, cooperating partners and guests. It offers invitations to events, special information about our members and it provides interesting advertising opportunities at low cost for members. 2013 will also see further development for the BCCG, especially with our main Conference and AGM in Dresden (16th May), and some more interesting conferences, e.g. in Hamburg, Berlin, Düsseldorf, London, Munich and Stuttgart. We would like to to thank all our members and sponsoring partners, as well as our honorary committees very much for their personal contribution and support in helping us to achieve our goals and to strengthen the growing BCCG network. Norbert Strohschen, President Andreas Meyer-Schwickerath, Director
