DUTCHAM S RIO ADVISORY BOARD CREATED The is active on a nationwide basis. This is shown by the involvement of companies in initiatives such as the yearly Trade Award, the services supplied to many individual companies, and the presence of member-companies throughout the country. For example, Dutcham counts on fifty-two member companies with their own offices in the city of Rio de Janeiro. A listing of these can be found on www.dutcham.com.br / www.dutcham.nl. Especially in the Oil & Gas and Naval Construction industries, many Dutch companies were assisted by Dutcham and its member companies in setting up shop in Rio. This having said, time seemed ripe to "top off" the aforementioned package of services with some social events / network gatherings. To enhance the aforementioned initiatives in Rio, it was decided to create a special local Advisory Board for Rio de Janeiro. As is the case with Dutcham s Advisory Board in The Netherlands, it will greatly influence decisions about what to develop and how, locally. The composition of this Board will follow the priority order indicated by Dutcham s ranking system: Membership is by companies rather than physical individuals, whereby preference is given to the ranking of involvement of these member companies with Chamber initiatives. In the measurement of that involvement, both financial and non-financial contributions are contemplated, ranging from membership fees to editorial contributions and the providence of guest-speakers and similar. This mechanism expresses gratefulness to the contributions received, as well as it provides transparency, credibility, and dynamics in its organizational setup. The ranking for 2013 based on 2012 can be found on the web-site www.dutcham.com.br / www.dutcham.nl. Representatives from Dutcham s member companies gathered in Rio de Janeiro on Friday April the 19th at the premises of IBEF (Instituto Brasileiro de Executivos de 01
Finanças), for a meeting lead by Dutcham President Mr. Thomas Lagemann and presence of it s Vice-President Mr. José Paulo Alves Pequeno end its Managing Director Mr. Hans Mulder. Dutcham s Rio Advisory Board will assist in the further local enhancement of existing Dutcham s initiatives, such as: i) The providence of editorial material for Dutcham s Business Bulletin, ii) The providence of ideas and guest-speakers for Dutcham s Technical Seminars in The Netherlands, iii) Editorial chapters for Dutcham s "Kompas" Guide for foreign investors, iv) The gathering of candidates and active participation in the Dutcham Trade Award competition, v) Assistance in the reception of individual or collective visits, and in the further local enhancement of Dutcham initiatives to be developed, such as i) The "Sustainability Prize" that is being created, and ii) The development of local network gatherings. In the latter, the concept and format was left fully open for suggestions. Thereupon and after the exchange of ideas about feasibility, it was decided to create a luncheon meeting with guest speaker in a central location for about 75 people on Wednesday August 14. 02
ONE CENTURY OF SHELL IN BRAZIL What started as a small warehouse keeping stock of fuels and lubricants on the Ilha do Governador in the Bahia de Guanabara of Rio de Janeiro in 1913, developed into a deep-sea oil drilling operation and the local market leader in bio-fuels. This history was illustrated with photos by nobody less than one Brazil s most famous actresses, Ms. Fernando Montenegro, during SHELL s top-class celebration party in the Copacabana Palace Hotel on Thursday April the 18th. Dutcham was represented on the party by its President Mr. Thomas Lagemann and its Managing Director Mr. Hans Mulder. Among the surprises were live performances by Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso - (see photo) UNILEVER INVESTS IN TOMATOS It acquired the company Predilecta, the third biggest tomato processing plant in Brazil, located in the city of Pato de Minas (MG), which will receive R$ 20 million for refor m and amplification. NEW YORK HIRES ARCADIS TO EVALUATE OPTIONS TO MANAGE FLOODING ARCADIS has been hired by the New York Economic Development Corporation (NY EDC) to study various alternatives for flood risk reduction in Lower Manhattan and other areas vulnerable to flooding due to sea level rise and future severe weather events. ARCADIS is conducting quantitative analyses of computer models simulating a variety of scenarios 03
including theoretical storms, and high tide and sea level rise as far into the future as 2050. A variety of approaches could be considered including engineered structures like sea walls, smart levees, and storm surge barriers, and measures that work with nature like wetlands restoration, salt ponds and beach nourishment. Additionally, methods for strengthening the city's infrastructure and critical buildings to provide for severe weather resiliency are explored as part of the studies conducted. ESCHER IN TAPESTRY Whom attended Dutcham s Business Borrel cocktail on March 19 in the Golden Tulip Belas Artes Hotel may have noticed that the swimming pool area, already beautiful by itself, was decorated with tapestry reproducing art by M.C. Escher. (see photos).
