Have you thought of getting a university degree Extended Education ACCESS Programs

University of Manitoba Access Program (UMAP) Access Programs are located in the new Aboriginal House on campus. Our focus is on you the student and we are committed to your success in whatever career path you choose. We know that our support, combined with the determination of our students, make dreams come true. UMAP students may pursue any program of study which leads to a degree or diploma at the University of Manitoba. Applicants must submit two applications: one to the University of Manitoba and one to the Access Programs. Students must qualify for regular University entrance or be mature students. Mature students are 21 years of age or older and are admissible to University 1. After successfully completing a minimum number of credit hours, students may transfer to the faculty of their choice. Access Programs include: University of Manitoba Access Program (UMAP), including Education Access Program (EAP) Health Careers Access Program (HCAP), including Nursing Professional Health Program (PHP) Any resident of Manitoba may apply. Preference is given to Aboriginal people (Status, Non-Status, Metis, Inuit), residents of Northern Manitoba, and low income earners. The Access Programs offer unique supportive wholistic programming in the areas of academic and personal counselling, limited financial support, course instruction, orientation program, tutoring and advocacy for anyone who has not had an opportunity to attend University because of social, economic or academic reasons. Managing parenting and university at the same time often seemed impossible. If it were not for the U of M Access Programs and staff, I feel that I would not have been as successful in my studies. I owe them a huge thanks! - Shanolyn Maytwayashing Access student (far left)

Michael s smile is a good indication of his future and success with Access... Access Programs provided me with two of the most important tools needed for university - the physical and spiritual guidance to succeed at the university level. They not only showed me the path to campus buildings and resources, they provided me with writing and study tutors to improve my marks and a counselor when I needed help with family and personal issues. Through Access I made friends, volunteered and had opportunities to be a part of amazing events, and even met Buffy Ste. Marie! Without Access, every small hurdle could have easily added up to a brick wall, but with their support, I was able to focus on my studies and get one step closer to achieving my dream. Meegwetch Access! - Michael Dori Access student

Jessica originates from Cranberry Portage and will be graduating from the Faculty of Law. She gives high marks to her experience in the Access Program. Nothing can fully prepare you for your individual experience in university. It is your own hard work, conviction, and determination that will navigate your success. As an Access student, you have the support to assert yourself, and persevere. What greater motivation is there, than knowing that you have your community and nation behind you? For me, the Access Programs solidified the reality that a student from the North can pursue her dream. Jessica Marcellais Law student Orientation is your first introduction to the University of Manitoba. You ll meet other students, get a sense of campus life and learn skills that will help you throughout your education.

Allison grew up in Cross Lake, MB... I am now in my fourth year of study in the Faculty of Social Work. Being a student and mother of three children, I do not think I would have got this far in university without the help of the Access Programs. Their support has helped me to balance my home and school life; they helped me academically and emotionally. Moreover, the staff and students at the Access Programs became my family. This team of staff and students helped me to achieve and accomplish my dreams. Allison Mckay Social Work student Making the decision to pursue a law degree sounded unrealistic at my age, but with the support of the Access Programs and their staff, I have the confidence needed to make my dream a reality. Thank you, Access. Thank you for helping me to believe in myself. R. Skip Gagnon Access Student

Kyle s enthusiastic smile is a good reference for his future... Upon becoming a single parent, I realized I needed to do more with my life and decided to attend University. As I began university I lacked confidence in my abilities to succeed. It was also very challenging to balance my family responsibilities and my academic studies. However, with the guidance of the Access Programs academic advisors and student counselors, I was able to overcome my struggles and succeed. As a result, I have been accepted into the BSW program and am working towards achieving my educational goal of becoming a social worker. Kyle McClintock Social Work student I grew up in St. Ambroise, Manitoba. For the past four years, Access Programs has been there for me. I am so thankful for everything they have done to help ensure that I graduate with my Bachelor of Social Work degree. Thank you for your support and encouragement!! Channing Lavallee Social Work student

Wade is a graduate of the Faculty of Education and is a role model, giving back to the community. University is something I have spent my whole life preparing for, as he talks about what has brought him here from the tiny northern community of Vogar, 70 people strong. I want to be a high school teacher. My Mom is a teacher, and at home we often spoke about learning. Teaching means I will go home happy, says Wade with an infectious smile. I enjoy coming to the classroom. The environment is brimming with fun and it feels comfortable. If you want to teach, university is part of that goal. You have to have that in your mind when you come here. New knowledge instills pride and makes you feel good. You will belong with many others walking the same road. It is ok to be scared, he emphasizes. It is the hardest and yet most fulfilling time of your life. It is about responsibility, accountability, success and appreciation. The Education Access Program gives you opportunities you don t get at home. These opportunities are easy to use, there is the support and care there for you, especially in the tough times. In my small community, I didn t have any role models outside of my family. He pauses reflectively. You can become a role model. That is a goal for some students. I think it is a goal for me. Wade Houle Graduate, Education student

Leonard is thrilled to be a part of the University of Manitoba... I am looking forward to applying my degrees and going into the schools and teaching Senior Years Physical Education and Geography. Having completed the B.Ed. program, I feel confident and prepared to go out and teach my own class. - Leonard Woitowicz Graduate (far left) Phys. Ed 06/ B.Ed. 08
