A year after winning its first conference crown in 50 years, the Golden Bears have a lot of new faces on this year s squad with a freshman class that was ranked No. 17 by Rivals.com. Junior guard Jorge Gutierrez is the only returning starter from last year. Gutierrez will take over where Jerome Randle left off as the team s new point guard. A member of the Pac-10 All-Defensive team last year, he averaged 5.5 ppg and 3.0 rpg. The Bears will pride themselves on their defense this season, and Gutierrez is no stranger to that. In his first two seasons at Cal, Gutierrez has collected 55 career steals. He will get help on the veteran leadership side from senior center Markhuri Sanders-Frison and junior forward Harper Kamp, who is returning this season after sitting out all of last year recovering from knee surgery. As a sophomore in 08-09, Kamp contributed 3.8 ppg and 3.2 rpg, primarily as a reserve. Sanders-Frison is back after putting in a tremendous offseason workout regimen that saw him lose 10 pounds. He started 10 games, chipping in 3.3 ppg and 3.0 rpg last year after transferring from South Plains College. Cal has won 38 of its last 40 nonconference home games, including the last 19 in a row. In his first two years at the helm for the Bears, head coach Mike Montgomery has amassed a 31-3 record at Haas. The Bears went 15-1 at home a year ago, with the lone defeat coming in overtime against UCLA. Among the new faces for the Bears is freshman guard Allen Crabbe out of Price High School in Los Angeles. In last Wednesday s 30-point exhibition victory over Sonoma State, Crabbe paced the Bears with 22 points. The 2010 California Gatorade Player of the Year and Parade All-American shot 4-for-4 from three-point distance and 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Fellow freshman guard, Gary Franklin chipped in 17 points, going 3-for-10 from behind the arc. A four-time Pac-10 Coach of the Year and recipient of a John R. Wooden "Legends of Coaching" Lifetime Achievement Award, Montgomery brought a proven record of success to Berkeley, and has collected 20 postseason appearances, claimed five conference championships and reached the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament. Montgomery enters the 2010-11 season with a 593-266 (.690) record at the college level, a mark that places him sixth in victories among active coaches at the Division I level. He was 393-167 (.702) over 18 years at Stanford from 1987-2004 and 154-77 (.667) during the previous eight seasons at Montana. Overall, 27 of his 28 teams have posted winning records. In his first season coaching the Bears, Montgomery took a team that was predicted to come in eighth in the Pac-10 preseason media poll and guided Cal to a third-place finish in the conference. Montgomery also helped Jerome Randle and Patrick Christopher earn All-Pac-10 first-team honors. Under Montgomery's guidance, Randle won Pac-10 Player of the Year honors in 2010. While coaching at Stanford, Montgomery garnered an assortment of honors, including the prestigious John R. Wooden "Legends of Coaching" Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. The Long Beach, Calif., native was tabbed the Sports Illustrated National Coach of the Year in 2000 and the Naismith and Basketball Times Coach of the year in '04. In addition, he has been honored as the Pac-10 Coach of the Year in 1999, 2000, 2003 and 2004. Montgomery received the John R. Wooden "Legends of Coaching" Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004, following Dean Smith of North Carolina (1999), Mike Krzyzewski of Duke (2000), Lute Olson of Arizona (2001), Denny Crum of Louisville (2002) and Roy Williams of Kansas (2003). The award recognizes coaches who exemplify Coach Wooden's high standards of coaching success and personal accolades. Three student-athletes under Montgomery's tutelage have been named Wooden All-Americans (Todd Lichti in 1989, Mark Madsen in 2000 and Casey Jacobsen in 2001). While Stanford advanced to the 1998 NCAA Final Four, its 2000-01 team is also recognized as one of the best in Cardinal history. Montgomery guided the Cardinal to a 31-3 record, a third straight Pac-10 title and a spot the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. During the year, Stanford set or tied 13 Pac-10 and school records, including team marks for wins (31) and scoring average (83.2). The Cardinal led the nation in field goal percentage (51.1%) and ranked in the top eight in the country in six statistical categories. Freshman guard Allen Crabbe paced Cal with 22 points, shooting 6-for-7 from the field, 4-for-4 from behind the arc and 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. Crabbe also posted three rebounds and an assist for the game. Junior guard Jorge Gutierrez also had a strong showing on the evening for the Bears, posting 11 points, six assists and three rebounds. The game marked the first time since the 2008-2009 season that junior forward Harper Kamp was on the court after missing last season recovering from knee surgery. He finished the game with ten points, seven rebounds and two assists in 19 minutes of action. Cal Inks David Kravish for 2011-12 Season The Bears signed 6-9, 210-pound forward David Kravish out of Lee's Summit, Mo., to a National Letter of Intent on Nov. 10. Kravish, who was named a First-Team All-Conference selection as a junior, is a candidate for the Kansas City Player of the Year award, according to numerous members of the local media in Kansas City. Through his sophomore and junior seasons (30 games), Kravish is averaging just under 10 points per game and is shooting 72.5 percent from the charity stripe. He also has 185 rebounds and 47 blocks to his credit. Kravish has been regarded as an agile player who attacks the offensive glass hard and is always going to the rim with his quick leaping ability, long arms and good hands. He is a solid free throw shooter and is capable of knocking down the high post jump shots. Cal's Nonconference Success at Haas Pavilion With a 7-0 record in Haas Pavilion last year, Cal has now won 38 of its last 40 nonconference home games, including the last 19 in a row. Cal went 15-1 for the entire 2009-10 season at Haas Pavilion, with the one loss coming against UCLA in overtime. In 2008-09, the Bears were 9-0 in Berkeley against teams outside the Pac-10. Looking back further, Cal was 8-1 outside the conference at home in 2007-08 and 6-1 in 2006-07. Bears Picked Seventh in Pac-10 Preseason Poll The Bears were slated to finish seventh in the Pac-10 Preseason Media Poll that was announced on Oct. 28. Cal garnered 151 votes. Defending Pac-10 Tournament champion Washington gathered 33 first-place votes to earn the favorite status. Arizona collected one of the two remaining first-place votes and follows Washington in the poll. UCLA picked up the other first-place vote and is slotted third. Arizona State was picked fourth, followed by Washington State (fifth) and USC (sixth). Rounding out the preseason poll, Oregon State came in eighth, Stanford ninth and Oregon 10th. New Bears Have Big Shoes to Fill The majority of the key players from last season s Pac-10 championship squad graduated last spring Jerome Randle, Patrick Christopher, Theo Robertson and Jamal Boykin. This season s returners, except for Harper Kamp who redshirted last year, accounted for 12.0 percent of the team s points in 2009-10, while last year s big four seniors boasted 75.0 percent of the total points. To help fill the large void, Cal has rearmed in 2010-11 with a freshman class that was ranked No. 17 by Rivals.com and No. 24 by ESPN. Cal Brings in Top-20 Recruiting Class Cal s incoming freshman class was ranked No. 17 by Rivals.com and No. 24 by ESPN. Leading the way is guard Allen Crabbe out of Price HS in Los Angeles, who was named the 2010 California Gatorade Player of the Year and Parade All-American. Among Cal s other standout recruits is Gary Franklin (Mater Dei HS), whom ESPN listed as the No. 66 recruit in the nation. One of the most sought-after guards in the West a year ago, the 6-2 CIF Player of the Year poured in 17.4 ppg as a senior. Two other freshman join the squad from the Los Angeles area forward Richard Solomon and Justin Cobbs, a transfer from Minnesota who attended Bishop Montgomery HS. Solomon was a high school teammate of Crabbe s and was rated the No. 20 power forward in the nation by Rivals.com. One of the Bears later signings, Emerson Murray from Vancouver, British Columbia, played on the Canadian Junior National team this past summer and was regarded by Hoopstars Canada as the second-best backcourt prospect in Canada. Alex Rossi is a natural shooter who is also known for his defensive abilities. He is the fifth recent Cal recruit to come from the Chicago area (Winnetka, Ill.).

Pac-12 Schedule Rotation Model Revealed Last week, the Pac-10 announced its 10-year schedule rotation model for the Pac-12 Conference beginning next season. As in previous years, the conference schedule is comprised of 18 games for each institution and will maintain the travel partner in a nondivisional format. The annual schedule will include games against an institution's traditional rival both home and away. In addition, each institution will play six other opponents both home and away (for two consecutive years), and four opponents on a single-game basis - two at home and two away. The single-play opponents will rotate every two years. Therefore, Cal s single-play opponents for 2011-12 and 2012-13 will be Washington, Washington State, Arizona and Arizona State. The Golden Bears will play Washington and Washington State on the road, while welcoming Arizona and Arizona State to Haas Pavilion next season.
