The course in Medical Microbiology and Immunology includes Bacteriology, Mycology, Virology, Immunology and Cell and Molecular Biology with major emphasis on their role in the management, control and prevention of human diseases. The Masters programme in Microbiology and immunology is taught in very few Universities in East Africa, and Tanzania in particular. This has lead to shortage of microbiologists not only in teaching universities, but also in hospitals and research centres. The Master of Medicine programme in Microbiology and Immunology at UDOM is a three years programme, which is organized into six semesters. Each academic year is made of 6

44 teaching weeks with two 22 weeks semesters (inclusive of two examination weeks). The MMed Pathology programme has been designed to train qualified medical officers to become Histopathologists capable of doing diagnostic histopathology work and autopsy for both medical and forensic use.
