Gifted Education Services Students are referred for assessment for Middle School gifted education services during the second semester of each school year for enrollment in gifted education services the following school year. Students new to the district may be referred upon enrollment and will be assessed within sixty days of enrollment. BBHMS Booklet {2

Language Arts Criteria Grade Six (students entering grade 6) A score of 120 or higher on an Ohio Department of Education approved school abilities test* administered within the previous 24 months. A score of 95% or higher on a selected* Ohio Department of Education approved fifth grade reading test. Grade Seven (students entering grade 7) Students successfully completing the sixth grade advanced Language Arts class move up into the seventh grade advanced language arts class. Additional students may be referred for inclusion in the seventh grade advanced Language Arts class. Criteria for new placement in the seventh grade advanced Language Arts class are: A score of 120 or higher on an Ohio Department of Education approved school abilities test* administered within the previous 24 months. A score of 95% or higher on a selected* Ohio Department of Education approved current Grade reading test of 95% or higher. Grade Eight (students entering grade 8) Students successfully completing the seventh grade advanced Language Arts class move up into the eighth grade advanced Language Arts class. Additional students may be referred for inclusion in the eighth grade advanced Language Arts class. Criteria for new placements in the eighth grade advanced Language Arts class are: A score of 120 or higher on an Ohio Department of Education approved school abilities test* administered within the previous 24 months. A score of 95% or higher on a selected* Ohio Department of Education approved current reading test. BBHMS Booklet {3

Math Criteria Academic Math Sequence 6th grade academic Math - Book 1 7th grade academic Math - Book 2 8th grade academic Math - Book 3 Grade Six Completion of 6th grade math in 5th grade OR A score of 95% or higher on a selected * Ohio Department of Education approved fifth grade math test. Students will be given a list of concepts to study from the 6th grade math course. A post-test will be given in May at Central School. Students who score 89% or lower will be able to retest in August at the Middle School. Students must score 90% on the test in order to take the accelerated math course. **No student may skip 7th grade Math and go directly into 8th grade Math. Opportunities to accelerate in Math throughout 7th and 8th Grade Once the student completes 7th grade math, students that achieve a 92% overall average (4 quarter grades and the end of course exam) will have the opportunity to be enrolled in a compacted math course that would cover 8th grade Math and Algebra I. Science Criteria Brecksville-Broadview Heights Middle School offers an accelerated Science class for seventh grade students who meet the placement criteria. Students complete the compacted seventh and eighth grade Science curriculum in one year. Half of the students who qualify begin the year in seventh grade Science, while the other half begin the year in eighth grade Science. At the end of the first semester, the students will rotate to the other section. This configuration allows accelerated science students the opportunity to take Honors Physical Science for high school credit during their eighth grade year. Grade 7 Grade 6 standardized achievement test score in Math of 95% and above. Grade 6 standardized achievement test score in Science of 95% and above. Advanced OAA score in grade 5 science **No exceptions Higher level mathematics is necessary for the Honors science program. BBHMS Booklet {5

The Honors Physical Science & Honors Geometry courses are taken for high school credit, weighted and will count in the High School GPA. They will also be reflected in the Middle School GPA. Selected Standardized Tests Approved by the Ohio Department of Education The Brecksville-Broadview Heights School District uses the following testing instruments to identify students as gifted and to identify students for gifted education services. Otis Lennon School Ability test, 8th Edition Iowa Test of Basic Skills Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT), Form 6 Stanford 10 Achievement Test Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children 4th Edition Woodcock-Johnson Note: The Brecksville-Broadview Heights School District uses the STAR Enterprise tests to screen students for possible gifted student identification. STAR Enterprise instruments are NOT used to identify students for gifted education services. BBHMS Booklet {7
