Career opportunities trainee program
Career Opportunuties FMC offers a variety of different career opportunities within a wide range of disciplines and professions. Product knowledge and system understanding combined with a learning attitude and a respect for what each person brings to the table, is vital to almost everything we do. Then, we can do great things together. FMC Value Chain We maintain long term customer relations in order to promote and sell our products and services. Customers often request a field study, either as a result of marketing activities or on own initiative. Based on field study report and customer requirements we tender for projects. If contracted, the project goes to project administration who will mobilize key personnel to run and manage the new project. Now system engineering takes place, detailing system set-up of what has been sold. In the various product departments project engineers are allocated for project engineering, detailing the scope of supply. Based on released scope of supply we procure and supply materials from a pre-qualified supply chain. After manufacture, assembly and system tests the subsea system is handed over to customer. We finally mobilize installable equipment and tools and execute customer support offshore operations. DEFINISION: The value chain comprises the entire work process from purchase of raw materials until we supply end user with goods and services through life of field. The primary goal in the entire value chain is service to our customers. Name: Tore Faanes Age: 48 Place of residence: Kongsberg Present position in FMC: System Engineering Employee since: 1995 The combination of technical challenges and management of skilled employees gives me a lot of energy. Working in a global company brings me in contact with colleagues and customers from different cultures. In this environment I learn a lot, every day. FMC system engineering services are available to support the development of large and complex systems, where unique knowledge of field architecture and component design makes a significant impact on cost and reliability. 6 As a child I lived and grew up close to what was then NTH (NTNU) in Trondheim. In fact, I looked down on campus from my room. I was fascinated by the university environment and the students having great fun all over the city. This, combined with my interest in technology and structured problem-solving, directed me into engineering. I have a Master degree in Electro / Cybernetics from NTNU and one year of Business Administration from Buskerud University College. I have also attended several management training programs. My first job after graduation was developing and installing software for Dynamic Positioning systems on vessels. I gradually moved into project management and department management and came to FMC as a group leader in the Control System Department in 95. At present, my title is System Engineering and as such I manage a department of 120 employees and consultants. Main focus is to ensure engineering deliverables are on time, on budget and meet customers expectations. FMC is expanding rapidly, and there are numerous possibilities to find new challenges all the time both in Norway and abroad. Even though I find my present job very exiting I can still see a lot of other challenging and interesting things to do in the future within FMC Technologies. 7
Name: Kristin Kjenaas Age: 31 Place of residence: Svene Present position in FMC: Group Leader Employee since: 1997 I m married with 2 children. FMC offers great opportunities even though family and children at present are my number one priority. An FMC subsea tree is an assembly of valves that feature required barrier functions between reservoir and environment. FMC has successfully delivered more than 1 200 subsea trees for more than 250 global prohjects. 8 I was interested in the Petroleum business, and wanted to work in Kongsberg. Therefore, in between studies, I had part time engagements at FMC, summers included. I knew quite a lot about the company, I knew a few people and a little bit about the products. I have a Bachelor s degree from the University of Stavanger in Petroleum Technology, where I specialized in drilling and general petroleum technology. I started out in 1997 assisting field development engineers with tenderand field study activities. I was then allocated on to the Gullfaks Phase 2 first in the studyphase, later also in tendering and when FMC was awarded the contract, I continued on the project itself. In 2000 I changed department to Completion and Workover, and took on position as Lead Engineer for Gullfaks Phase 2. Last year I started my current job as a Group Leader in CWO. I have to decide whether I want to work with technology or continue my administrative career. There are so many possibilities here at FMC Technologies, but I think that I have already made up my mind. I find leadership and human resources very challenging. At the same time, I realize that I could not have done what I do today without my technical experience. 9
Name: Bjørn Wennberg Age: 57 Place of residence: Hokksund Present position in FMC: Lead Engineer Employee since: 1996 You have to be robust in this business, there is pressure everywhere. The TMI department is constantly developing, so there are a lot of new things to learn all the time. Here, you have the opportunity to influence your own career development within a wide range of products and job positions. HSE friendly design is one of our main concerns. The protection structure is vital to secure overtrawlable equpiment, especially important in coastal environments. I had an uncle who was an engineer, and looked up to him. In addition to this, I have always been fascinated by mechanical devices and things like engines for example. Wanted to know how they worked, stripped them down and put them together again. In a way I think it was given to start on a technical university. I attended the Kongsberg Technical University and hold a Bachelor s degree in Mechanical and Production engineering. It was a coincidence that I started in the oil business, and my first job was in 1973 at the former Nyland s Verksted in Oslo. There, I worked as a designer in the oil rig equipment section. I have been working as a designer both for other companies and as my own employer for about 20 years. In 1996 I sold my company and started to work as a designer here in the TMI department. In 1999 I took on my current position as Lead engineer in technical design. I would like to work at FMC for the rest of my career, because this company is future oriented and the level of technology is so high. If I get the chance, I could also be interested in working outside Norway for a while. I can not think of any better place to be than here with FMC. 10 11
Name: Tone Fehn Age: 26 Place of residence: Porsgrunn Present position in FMC: Project Engineer Employee since: June 2006 The people I work with in my group are very important to me. They are very skilled with a lot of experience, and you are always welcome to ask questions. There is always someone around who knows the answer. This is so reassuring to know, both for me and, I guess, all new employees. FMC Control Systems operate and monitor subsea trees, manifolds, pipeline terminations and subsea process equipment. The various systems are designed to operate trees as close as 3 miles and up to 90 miles from topside facilities. Actually, it all started when I was about 10 years old and saw the movie Honey, I shrunk the kids! I thought to myself I would also make things like that! Since then, I have had an interest for the technical field. I have a Master degree in Cybernetics at NTNU in Trondheim, with a specialization within Dedicated Computer Systems. I have also spent a year at Tokyo Institute of Technology, studying subjects within Robotics. In addition to this, I have had an Internship and taken courses in Entrepreneurship at Fudan University in Shanghai. I have just started as a Project Engineer at Instrumentation and Topside Electrical, and I am working with electro hydraulic control systems. My main responsibility is the Subsea Control Unit, which monitors and controls our subsea installations. First, I want to become more experienced and become more familiar with the entire Subsea System. Then I would like to work either with R&D or business development. At FMC you get the opportunity to work within a longe range of fields, and meet with a lot of very competent and skilled people. These are the main reasons why I chose FMC Technologies as my employer. 12 13
Name: Marit Opheim Age: 34 Place of residence: Kongsberg Present position in FMC: Delivery Employee since: June 2006 In my job, it is essential to be orderly and to have an overview. In addition to this, I need to make sure my subcontractors deliver on time, and also that the quality is right. In short, a delivery manager operates in the field so to say. It is a somewhat exposed position. FMC manifolds are designed to direct the flow from multiple individual wells into multiple production flowline headers. They can operate for up to 25 years at water depths to 10 000 feet, working pressures to 15 000 PSI and temperatures to 350 degrees. I was in Lebanon, and was advised to apply for the Norwegian Army technical school. To get paid while being under education seemed to be a wise thing to do. I got my Engineering degree in the army and hold a bachelor s degree in engineering. Later, I took a part time course in project management. For the time being, I am delivery responsible for TMI-products for Total s Moho Bilondo Project in Congo. This means full cost and budget control. I see myself as a project manager in the future, but before I can take on such a position, I need to learn more about the different products here at FMC. My leadership experience from the army proves very useful here, especially when it comes to how groups and people work together. The company is expanding rapidly, and there are so many nice people giving me all kind of assistance when I ask for it, so I hope one day I will get my chance. 14 15
