DIVISION OF STUDENT AFFAIRS & ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT GRADUATE ASSISTANT POSITION DESCRIPTIONS Fall 2015-Spring 2016 Academic Support and Mentoring Office Contact: Kate Gold, 235-1179 This graduate assistant will be involved in ASM s flagship program, Supplemental Instruction (SI). SI offers regularly scheduled, peer-facilitated, group study sessions that are open to all students enrolled in select historically difficult courses. In the sessions, students actively engage with one another and with the material to develop critical thinking skills, organizational techniques, new approaches to learning, and ways to apply information from their classes. Students who participate in SI earn better grades in their SI supported courses, and are far less apt to receive a D, F, or withdrawal grades in these historically difficult classes. The GA would provide supervision to the student SI Leaders, assist in their training, attend and help facilitate the SI Leaders meetings, and represent SI on the UMKC campus. In addition, the GA would be responsible for gathering, analyzing, and reporting out on UMKC SI assessment outcomes. This individual must be a team player, but also able to work independently. In addition, the successful applicant must display good communication skills and show strong attention to detail. Superior computer skills are needed for this role. As well, this graduate assistant may be required to do data entry or assist with general office tasks as assigned. (no openings) This graduate assistant will be involved in student retention and academic support programs such as Supplemental Instruction, Video-based Supplemental Instruction, e-tutoring as well as involvement with the Math and Science Tutoring Center. It is also possible that this graduate assistant will be involved with the department s community outreach programs, such as JumpStart and the Kauffman Scholars Summer Program. Primarily, however, this graduate assistant will assist with the unit s e- learning and website management efforts. This individual must be a team player, but also able to work independently. In addition, the successful applicant must display good communication skills and show strong attention to detail. Superior computer skills are needed for this role. Along with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, the candidate will need web development capabilities as well as a working knowledge of learning management systems, such as Adobe Connect, Blackboard, Moodle, Wimba etc. As well, this graduate assistant may be required to do data entry or assist with general office tasks as assigned. (no openings) Admissions Office Contact: Maya Mapp, mappm@umkc.edu, 235-1210 Assist the Office of Admissions Welcome Center by serving as a liaison to the College of Arts and Sciences in the planning and execution of recruitment efforts with a special emphasis on scheduling academic appointments for prospective students participating in a weekday visit. (no openings) Specific Duties: 1. Serve as the point person for prospective undergraduate students interested in the College of Arts and Sciences by overseeing the scheduling logistics of academic appointments.

2. Communicate and build relationships with faculty, staff and advisors in the College of Arts and Sciences in order to schedule appointments and help streamline recruiting efforts. 3. Become knowledgeable about departments and majors within the College of Arts and Sciences through opportunities such as trainings and departmental meetings. 4. Serve as a substitute for College of Arts and Sciences faculty, staff or advisors if they are unavailable to meet with the student for an academic appointment. 5. Provide reports and information as requested by leadership in the Office of Admissions or in the College of Arts and Sciences. 6. Respond to emails and telephone calls from applicants, prospective students, parents, counselors and the community at large. 7. Be willing to carry out recruitment activities of the Office of Admissions as assigned which includes but is not limited to Preview Days, visit appointments, and possibly engage in off-campus recruitment activities such as counselor events. 8. Other duties as assigned by either of the Director of Admissions, Associate Director of Admissions, Welcome Center Manager or the Associate Dean in the College of Arts & Sciences. Assist the Associate Director of Admissions for Recruitment and Welcome Center Manager with recruitment functions as assigned, functioning as a member of the Recruitment team. (no openings) Specific Duties: 1. Carry out recruitment activities of the Office of Admissions as assigned. This includes but is not limited to Preview Days, visit appointments, high school visits and college fairs. 2. Work with the Welcome Center to schedule prospective students visits to campus. Coordinate group visits to campus. Assist in the coordination of UMKC Preview Days, African American and Latino Youth Days, as well as other special campus visit programs. 3. Set up and staff promotional booths, exhibits and displays at college fairs, conferences, and other public areas as assigned, distributing informational materials and answering questions as appropriate. 4. Assist the Associate Director and Welcome Center Manager with New Student and Transfer Student Orientation programs. This includes the planning, implementation and evaluation of such programs. 5. Meet with potential students and their parents who are visiting the campus as assigned, providing them with a positive experience. 6. Provide reports and information as requested by the Associate Director or Director of Admissions. 7. Assist in answering questions from callers. Serve as a resource to student recruiters. 8. Assist with the processing of Freshmen and Transfer files to include calculating GPA s, reviewing high school transcripts, high school core requirements and ACT scores, for an admission decision. 9. Transmit application files, if necessary, to appropriate academic department for review. 10. Respond to emails and telephone calls from applicants, prospective students, parents, counselors and the community at large. 11. Other duties as assigned by either of the Director of Admissions, Associate Director of Admissions, or Welcome Center Manager.

Career Services (no openings) Office Contact: Sandi Dale, 235-1636 The Career Services graduate assistant will work primarily as a career counselor helping students choose majors, determine future career directions, administer and interpret interest and personality assessments, and work with a comprehensive array of job search strategies. The graduate assistant will conduct classroom presentation and workshops, assist with orientation activities, student success seminars and other outreach activities. The graduate assistant serves as one of the leading counselors modeling professional, caring and effective career development activities to current UMKC students and UMKC alumni. At least one graduate level Career Counseling course must have been completed. Preference is also given to students who have career counseling experience and are Counseling Psychology or Higher Education majors. Duties of a Career Counseling Graduate Assistant: As a career counseling graduate assistant, you will: Provide comprehensive career counseling services to students, staff, alumni, and/or community members Administer and interpret career related inventories including the Strong Interest Inventory, Myers Briggs Type Indicator, the 16 Personality Factor, the California Psychological Inventory and Strengths Quest. Support clients in resume development, cover letter skills, job search strategies, networking, and interview preparation Assist staff in development, collaboration, implementation, marketing, and/or evaluation of career-related student programming Serve as a representative of Career Services on campus at student orientations, career fairs, and informational fairs Participate in career-related workshops and community outreach programs, both on and off campus Continue to build strong professional relationships with all campus partners including students, faculty, staff, parents, and community organizations Note: These duties are not all inclusive and may change and/or new duties may be added due to changing student and staff needs. Coaching Program Contact: Cynthia Fails, 235-1136 Bloch Scholars Graduate Assistant- (no openings) This graduate assistant will be involved in the UMKC Coaching Program. Individuals applying for this position should have an interest in working with students in their first year of college, mentoring, and leading trainings and workshops. This position will require the successful candidate to assist the Coaching Program Coordinator in the day-to-day operations thus they must be a team player, but also able to work independently. In addition, the successful applicant must display good communication skills, and show strong attention to detail. Good computer skills are also needed - Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint a plus. Graduate assistant may be required to do data entry or assist with general office tasks in a communal office setting. The Graduate Assistant will be the primary contact of the Bloch Scholars Program. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Serving as a Lead Coach for the Peer Coaching Program Facilitating training workshops for Peer Coaches

Holding regular one-on one meetings with current Bloch Scholars enrolled at UMKC Developing an assessment plan to gage areas of improvement for current Scholars in the program Identifying and Coordinating a formal process for the office to recognize student success throughout the academic year Collaborating with Staff of the Coaching Program, Bloch Foundation and other Bloch Scholars serving institutions to further support each Scholar Conducting phone check-ins with freshmen students Developing a tracking system to monitor the progress of Academic Check-In meetings with the following groups: o Bloch Scholars o A Cohort of Peer Coaches o Walk-in Undergraduate Students Additional Tasks and Responsibilities for all positions include: Assisting with reports that track the progress of Bloch Scholars Developing the Bloch Scholars Alumni Engagement Network Managing the planning of the annual Bloch Scholars Graduation Reception Other duties as assigned Kauffman Scholars Graduate Assistant- (no openings) This graduate assistant will be involved in the UMKC Coaching Program. Assisting with the advising of student organizations under MSOC or NPHC Assisting the Assistant Dean, Assistant Director, Coordinator and Administrative Assistant on special projects and committees Other duties as assigned International Student Affairs Office (no openings) Office Contact: Marcie Barajas Munoz, 235-6234 This graduate assistant position will work with the international student admissions officers and international student advisors, assisting primarily with data-related priorities and report generation, orientation and programming events. Will also perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications: Must be a graduate international student attending UMKC who will have at least one year of study remaining at UMKC. Must have excellent technology/computer skills. Multicultural Student Affairs Office Contact: Keichanda Dees-Burnett, 235-5628 Graduate Assistant (no openings) in this highly competitive 10-month position is an integral part of the Multicultural Student Affairs team. MSA Graduate Assistants are directly involved in the daily operations of Multicultural Student Affairs and the African American History and Culture House. Qualifications include excellent administrative, planning, organizational, communication (verbal and written), ability to demonstrate strong attention to detail and computer skills. Candidates must be team-oriented, have initiative, be self-motivated and exceed expectations. Preference will be given to candidates who are interested in pursuing a career in Higher Education or other related fields, and have student leadership experience. The African American History and Culture House is open extended hours for student organization meetings and events and these assistantship positions may involve working some evenings and some Saturdays during the year. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, working outside of regular hours to cover student and community events, attending most Multicultural Student Affairs and African American History & Culture House events, interacting and assisting students, planning activities and events, co-advising at least one minority student organization and other duties as assigned. The Graduate Assistant will be the primary coordinator of all traditional programming and services offered through the office. Responsibilities include but not limited to: Serving as the initial contact person and coordinate all MSA volunteer recruitment programs such as African American and Latino Youth Days, Campus Preview Days, Tour Presentations and Roo Fairs Serve as a non-academic advisor to students through the MSA Academic Check-In program with the following groups: o Show Me Success Scholars o MSOC student leaders o Financial Aid-S.A.P. Students Developing an assessment plan to gage areas of improvement for each program Coordinate, recruit and host the Show Me Success Program Coordinate and host the Academic Success workshops addressing topics pertaining to retention and success Coordinate the planning and implementation of the Multicultural Graduate Reception Partner with the Counseling Center to coordinate the Wind Down Wednesdays for Mind, Body and Health awareness

Develop, plan and implement a series of programs related to various aspects of diversity Assist with the formal presentation of Diversity workshops including A&S 100 presentations Assist with providing coverage for student meetings and events on evenings and weekends at the African American History & Culture House Identify and Coordinate a formal process for the office to recognize student success throughout the academic year Additional Tasks and Responsibilities for all positions include: Assisting with the advising of student organizations under MSOC or NPHC Assisting the Assistant Dean, Assistant Director, Coordinator and Administrative Assistant on special projects and committees Other duties as assigned Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (no openings) Office Contact: Scott Laurent, 235-5696, laurentr@umkc.edu This graduate assistant will work as part of The Office of Services for Students with Disabilities in providing support services to UMKC students with disabilities. This person will be responsible for the case management of students with a variety of disabilities. Responsibilities include resource referral, academic and personal coaching, student engagement, and outreach programming. The successful candidate will have knowledge of higher education and/or experience working with individuals with disabilities. They must have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and perspectives. They must be able to communicate diplomatically, clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing. They should have the ability to problem solve and take appropriate steps when issues arise. This individual must be a team player, but also able to work independently. The ability to maintain confidentiality is essential. Good computer skills are also needed. These specialty areas may include LGBTQIA Programs & Services, Union Programming Board, Student Organizations, Fraternity and Sorority Affairs, OSI Campus Programming, or Service Engagement and Learning. Responsibilities and time commitment may include but are not limited to: Office of Student Involvement (20%) 1. Coordinate Founders Week (October) and Court Warming (February). 2. Provide support for College Panhellenic Council Recruitment. 3. Participate in Roos Give Back (Saturday in August). 4. Primary alternate for OSI Front Desk Coverage. 5. 6. Work assigned extended hours and opening coverage for OSI (bi-weekly). 7. Coordinate promotion and tabling for OSI in the Student Union and on campus. 8. Assist with Late Night Breakfast (May) and Good Morning Roos (Jan & Feb). 9. Assist with implementation of the OSI Leadership Summit (April). OSI Campus Programming (40 %) 1. Coordinate Welcome Week schedule 2. Assist with the organization of UMKC Family Weekend (September) 3. Coordinate UMKC Founders Week (October) programming; collaborate with campus and community constituents to enhance campus traditions and programs. 4. Assist with the management of RooGroups (events, form submissions, travel requests) and student organization requests for funding. 2. Assist with the management and implementation of funding initiatives for student organizations. a. Funding Workshops/Learning Modules for Fall and Spring semesters. b. Facilitate mandatory funding workshops for student organizations. c. Assist with the P-card (Procurement Card) processes for student organizations. 3. Facilitate Student Organization Leadership Development (SOLD) Workshops. a. Assist with the logistics and planning of the Student Organization Advisor Luncheon (spring semester) and the UMKC Student Leadership Conference (fall semester). 4. Provide support for general student organization tasks a. Assist with the logistics and planning of all Student Organization Expos (and Get Involved). b. Selection of organization spaces in the spring semester. c. Provide support for student organization programming and communication.

Residential Life Office Contact: Katie Garey, 235-5891 Working title- Assistant Residential Life Coordinator (one open position) Graduate assistant position assists in the supervision of up to 13 Resident Assistants or Apartment Resident Assistants. The graduate assistant aids the Residential Life Coordinator with educational and social programming, discipline, and total hall administration. This position requires a bachelor s degree and one-year experience living/working in residence hall or student apartments. This is a 12-month live-in position. Salary is $750 per month with education fee remission for three credit hours per semester, partially furnished apartment, and meal plan. He/she reports to the Residential Life Coordinator. Residential Life is a part of the Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Division. Graduate programs are available in higher education administration, counseling/psychology and many other areas through the Ph.D. level. Some specific responsibilities include: Staff Supervision and Student Conduct Hire, train, and supervise student staff Advise the Residence Hall Council Perform judicial/conduct functions Adjudicate conduct infractions or refer to the Associate Director or the Director of Residential Life Programmatic Initiatives for Residents Implement educational, academic, social, recreational programs Execute leadership training for staff, Residence Hall Council officers, general student population Develop in-service trainings for staff Facilities Oversight Manage Residential Life facilities for summer conferences in collaboration with Conference Coordinator, including all check-ins/outs and on-site facility issues Counsel and/or refer students with academic, social, behavioral, psychological concerns/problems. This assistant will be expected to serve in a lead student development role, with direct mentorship to student leaders in the 250+ student organizations. This assistant will be expected to assist the operation in the administration of all non-student activity. Specific duties will include fielding daily inquiries concerning event and activity space, relating policy and procedure to interested user groups, processing approval requests and additional requests as assigned, and confirming daily activity in the spaces. Additional duties will include the full support of the Summer Conference Program and guests. This role will be directly mentored by the Conference Coordinator. Specific duties will include direct oversight of the Student Union Welcome Desk, the administration of the One Card Office and Operations Staff student employee program, mentorship responsibility for the Roo Paws student committee, and evaluation measures for each facet of the student personnel program. Case Managers will work in collaboration with Peer Mentors, the ASD, and other Student Services personnel to manage an early alert/early intervention system, assist students in their definition and attainment of their personal, academic, and career goals. Further, Case Managers will help students gain the basic skills needed to register for appropriate course work and foster student success. Duties Manage early alerts/early intervention system, i.e. Case Managers will receive early alert feedback from faculty and/or staff, contact the students, and refer appropriately. Provide developmental advising to students. Assist students in gaining basic skills needed for the registration process. Collaborate with the ASD and Peer Mentors to manage a caseload that induces student success and retention. Communicate and coordinate with ASD, Peer Mentors, students, and other members of the student success team.
