POSITION SUMMARY Briefly describe the role of the position within the department and college. The Residence Life Coordinator (RLC) is responsible for the administration of the Residence Life Program within Housing and Residence Life, including but not limited to community development, programming, student learning initiatives and supervision of the student staff (RA/SSM and RHA). B. REQUIRED DEGREES, LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, CREDENTIALS 1. Minimum education level required and the number of years of relevant experience required for the duties of this position. Bachelor's degree required. Three years experience, and a Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, or Counseling strongly preferred. 2. Budget decisions involving student programming funds. Recruitment, selection, and training decisions for the student staff. Offer basic counseling and make referrals to other resources and offices on campus. Emergency response and management decisions regarding security and safety of Housing students and buildings. Interpret the Housing Terms and Conditions for students/parents. Interpret the Student Housing Handbook through communicating and enforcing polices and procedures. Recognize student staff and student needs and make decisions on appropriate response and resources to best assist. 3. JOB FUNCTIONS REFERENCE ID JOB FUNCTIONS FREQUENCY ANNUAL PERCENT OF TIME 1 SUPERVISION Supervise the Residence Life staff including Senior Resident Advisors, Resident Advisors, and Student Success Mentors. Educate the student staff about the goals and expectations of Housing and Residence Life through regularly scheduled meetings individually and as a team. Encourage student staff to embrace the mission and vision of Housing and Residence Life in their daily duties. 2 Facilitate relationships and disseminate information to residential students. Gather feedback from residents, student staff, staff/faculty, and guests about the quality of life on campus. Work to ensure a safe and secure environment free from any inappropriate behavior or safety issues. 3 Maintain frequent and open communication with students and departmental staff. Provide regular feedback, including annual performance appraisals to student staff and monitor progress with staff goals and expectations. 4 Ensure compliance with FERPA through training and supervision of the staff; uphold and role model a high standard of confidentiality. 5 Be approachable and accessible to Residence Life student staff. Assist with the daily operations of student staff duties, including but not limited to: addressing roommate conflicts, documenting facilities related issues, offering advice and making referrals to other campus resources when needed. Uphold Housing goals to ensure that residential students are safe and comfortable in their living environment and have the ability to be successful students at Oregon Tech. 40
4 6 In conjunction with the Director, plan, prepare, and implement staff recruitment and selection processes. In conjunction with the Director, plan, prepare and implement fall workshop (training) for Residence Life staff, Residence Life staff in-service training throughout the academic year, and staff pre-service training during the spring term. Training should prepare the staff to accurately and appropriately fulfill their job responsibilties and meet the needs of the students they serve. 7 PROGRAMMING 20 Facilitate program planning, activities and projects for on campus students providing opportunties for recreational, social and learning within Housing. Ensure the student staff host programs each quarter that meet the needs of the residents and fulfill the programming requirements by overseeing the planning and preparation of each staff and RHA hosted program. Track the annual programming efforts for the Residence Life staff and RHA. 8 Assist student staff in the planning, preparation and execution Quarterly of Housing sponsored community service events including the annual Haunted House, Giving Tree, Easter Egg Scramble, and Hootie's Hillish 5K. Solicit student involvment in each program to teach the importance of giving back to the community and to strengthen ties to the community. 9 Solicit, select and plan for opening week Residence Life Annually activities in coordination with New Wings Registration and Orientation. Provide on campus students opportunities to meet other residents. This includes planning for FYE Pre-Flight and the TOP Bridge program in conjunction with the Director and TOP staff. 10 ADVISING 15 Develop a sense of community among Residence Life staff and residents that fosters positive interpersonal relationships. 11 Serve as the advisor to the Residence Hall Association (RHA) by assisting with goal setting, budgeting, officer elections/selections, leadership development and training. Provide leadership development opportunities through meetings, advising sessions and training opportunities. Oversee RHA programming efforts and the RHA budgets from Residence Life and from ASOIT. 12 STUDENT ISSUES Assist student staff in dealing with issues involving residents, which may include, but is not limited to: homesickness, academic difficulties, physical or emotional health problems, suicidal thinking, disruptive behavior, vandalism, noise, and roommate conflicts, etc. 20
5 13 Know and utilize referral channels and emergency procedures to respond to on campus emergencies and student crises. Respond to incidents after hours per the on-call schedule. Know and understand Housing policies and procedures as well as Campus policies and procedures to educate residents who don't understand or whose behavior is unacceptable. Confront and document inappropriate behaviors from staff and students as witnessed. 14 Serve in an "on-call" role to respond to on campus crises which occur outside the normal business hours. 15 Work with other campus departments to address student issues (e.g., Student Health, Dean of Students, Student Success Center etc.) 16 Coordinate the Housing conduct process. Serve as the inital hearing officer, meeting with students who may have violated the Housing Contract Terms and Conditions and/or the Student Housing Handbook. Determine responsibility and impose educational sanctions as appropriate to prompt changes in behavior and hold student accountable for his/her actions and behaviors. 17 MISC Assist with the development and implementation of departmental mission and goals by attending and participating in weekly staff meetings and quarterly retreats to discuss short and long term departmental goals. 18 Represent Housing and Residence Life on campus committees as assigned. 19 Participate in all opening/closing events. Instruct Residence Life staff of their responsiblities and procedures. Answer questions about damages/charges as needed. 20 Work with the summer housing and conference program by assisting with staff hiring, training, scheduling. Work with representatives of the conference group to ensure needs are met and conferences adhere to their agreements. Communicate effectively with professional and student Housing staff Understanding student development theory in order to advise individual students and student groups in Housing. Ensure groups represent the Housing & Residence Life and OIT professionally and appropriately in their activities. Oversee and make final approval of any expenditures from Housing and/or ASOIT line items associated with the Residence Hall Association. 1-6, Knowledge of crisis management and referral skills and use of campus and community resources. Be aware of current issues and experiences of residential students. Ability to offer resources and advice to students in times of need Approve any expenditure from the line items within the Housing budget that pertain to programming (floor/community, all hall and RHA line items, and community service based projects and programs).
