The WDL RemoteBunker Technology, Competitive Positioning, & Customization Introduction WDL RemoteBunker focuses on having the most developed feature set of any company in the online backup space. Integrated Local & Universal Backup The WDL RemoteBunker product provides both online and local backup technology in one integrated package, being the first solution to enable customers to backup any data, to any destination, at any time. We call this Universal backup, and it gives enormous power to consumer and SMB users alike, who can then configure their backups, for example, to backup their entire computer to an external USB hard drive weekly, their My Documents folder to a network server nightly, and a very important document to the internet continuously, every time it changes. Continuous Data Protection Unlike most platforms in the online backup space, the WDL RemoteBunker Universal Backup client software solution includes support for continuous data protection of a customer's key files. Known as WDL RemoteBunkerLiveProtect, the system monitors activity on the selected files, and after detecting those files being modified, will backup the customer s data to up to six data centers instantly. Competitive note: none of WDL RemoteBunker s main competitors have the ability to watch files and detect changes. Most competitive solutions use a continuous background backup process as a simulation which increases the load on the user s machine permanently. Scheduled Backup Unless the customer chooses Continuous Data Protection, WDL RemoteBunker does not use system resources except during backups and restores. Local and off site backups can be scheduled separately. File & Folder Sharing The WDL RemoteBunker system provides end users with file and folder sharing, including sharing to persons who do not have WDL RemoteBunker accounts. Competitive note: WDL RemoteBunker s main competitors explicitly disclaim support for file & folder sharing. Multi computer Architecture (Account Portability) Being SaaS, the WDL RemoteBunker Backup system is inherently designed for use on multiple computers by the end user (although the system can limit backups to 1 or any specified number of computers). What this means in practice is that a customer need only purchase a backup account of an appropriate size, and isn t restricted by the number of computers they can then back up from. This results, in what WDL RemoteBunker calls portability, the ability to backup machine A, and immediately recover that data on machines B, C & D. Users expect that backup systems will WDL RemoteBunker You save it, we back it up offsite invisibly & automatically 3
allow restores to any computer they own. End users will also expect to be able to back up files from their desktops and notebooks, to one centralized backup account. Competitive note:wdl RemoteBunker s major competitors require a separate account or subscription for each computer. This makes immediate recovery difficult, as the user cannot simply recover their files from a secondary machine, but must purchase a second license. This is both frustrating for the user and costs the user more. 1 Unlimited Versioning WDL RemoteBunker provides fully versioned backup, and retains every version of every file that a user backs up. After the initial upload of a file, the WDL RemoteBunker backup engine calculates binary deltas, extracting only the 1 s and 0 s that have changed in a file since the last backup. Only the binary changes between file versions are transmitted. This has the side affect of creating a version tree, which allows users to roll back to any saved version of a file. Competitive note: most competitive solutions only support a limited number (usually up to 30) of versions for a given file. Archiving WDL RemoteBunker also retains files that a customer accidentally deletes off their client system. The WDL RemoteBunker system supports archiving, which is explicitly disclaimed by major competitors. Thus if a user accidentally deletes their file from their client system, WDL RemoteBunker will allow them to recover it ad infinitem. Competitive note: Most competitors automatically purge backups when a user deletes the original file from their client system, usually within 30 days. Competitors often say that retaining such data constitutes archiving, not backup. WDL RemoteBunker believes that this is very confusing to consumer and SMB users alike, and ignores the fact that a substantial cause of data loss is accidental deletion of files. Robust File & Network Support All WDL RemoteBunker s features open file backup, optional continuous data protection, network and database server backup are designed for use in enterprise and SMB environments, whilst being carefully engineered from a usability perspective to make sure that the powerful features are still usable by a consumer. Competitive note: open file backup, resumable file transferring, continuous data protection, and the ability to handle large files are all features of WDL RemoteBunker that most competitors in the consumer and SMB space do not have. No other system has the same breadth and depth of technology features as the WDL RemoteBunker system, as recently identified by PC Magazine. Multi data Center Architecture WDL RemoteBunker has ten data centers throughout the world (five in the United States, two in Europe, one in Asia and two in Australia). Not only does WDL RemoteBunker have more centers than competitors, but WDL RemoteBunker also redundantly stores data. After the initial upload to a data center, WDL RemoteBunker transmits the data to a second data center. 1 Note that more than 70% of US households that are connected to the internet have 2 or more computers. In the unlikely event of the catastrophic loss of a centerwdl RemoteBunker can redirect customers to the redundant center. Competitive note: Competitors usually have only one datacenter; or in a few cases, two. No other online backup company has a global infrastructure grid as broad as the WDL RemoteBunker data grid. The ability to store data locally is important for key markets such as the UK, the EU, and some Asian countries, particularly Japan. Immediate Access to Files via Browser or Software Users can access their data through the WDL RemoteBunker client software, or partner software; and alternatively through a web interface. Downloads are immediate and may be of any version of any file that has been saved. WDL RemoteBunker Online Backup and Locally Managed Backup Management The real cost of doing backup yourself is the cost of the continuous human management of such a system, plus the cost of replacing tapes/drives every 8 months. Keep these statistics from the HP & SCORE 2 data loss study in mind: 40% of all data loss is due to hardware failure 29% of all data loss is due to human error 13% is due to software error (corrupt files) 9% is due to theft 6% is from viruses 3% is from Hardware destruction Management i. Doing backup yourself a. Setup with a hardware solution takes time to implement i. to make sure the correct software is installed, updates/drivers for hardware devices are in place b. You ll need to have an organized system of switching and storing tapes i. A Library of tapes is required for even a minimal archival of data 1. Need to be stored in a temperature controlled environment c. You ll need to have a reliable person at each location to execute the switching/organizing of tapes d. You ll need to have someone run test restorations at least weekly to verify that the backups created are not corrupt i. These systems only verify that data has been transferred, not that it s good data ii. Restoring tapes takes time e. You ll need to be diligent in replacing the hardware involved (tapes and tape drives) to avoid hardware failure and hardware incompatibility i. Plus, the cost of the newest Tapes and Tape Drives are always at the premium rather than our flat rate service 2 Impact on Small Businesses of Natural and Man Made Disasters, Hewlett Packard Development Company, L.P., 2007 WDL RemoteBunker You save it, we back it up offsite invisibly & automatically 5
