This is how you solve burning problems on forklift trucks and construction machines
With fire-fighting systems from KIDDE DEUGRA Fires spread more quickly than you think Commercial vehicles are in use for many hours at a time, sometime even round the clock. That means that many components reach high temperatures. The temperatures of items such as turbochargers or exhaust systems are above the ignition temperatures of many combustible materials. There is a high risk that the vehicle may catch fire. A technical defect is often the cause of the damage if, for instance, diesel or lubricant comes into contact with hot machine parts and catches fire. Even without any technical defects, fires can start more quickly than you might imagine. Vehicles that are used, particularly in companies that work with flammable goods, pose a high fire risk. Flammable dusts can become deposited within the vehicles and can easily catch light on hot surfaces. Often the fire starts only some time after the vehicle has been switched off because the engine had become overheated. What is particularly dangerous is that discovery of the fire is then a matter of pure chance. If a fire starts in the engine compartment, it is generally not discovered until too late. The restricted supply of oxygen is insufficient to allow the fire to spread rapidly. By the time the fire is discovered, the critical flash-over condition has been reached. Opening the engine compartment cover abruptly supplies plentiful oxygen to the oxygen-starved fire which can generally then no longer be extinguished using hand-held extinguishers.
Fixed on-board fire alarm and extinguishing systems act instantaneously, thus providing the best safety coverage. KIDDE DEUGRA systems consist of two modules: the alarm and triggering system and the extinguishing system. Our systems are designed so that a fire which starts in the engine compartment is automatically and directly extinguished. Because the system is linked directly to the battery, the automatic system is always available when the vehicle is in use, and even when it is stationary and unoccupied. The extinguishing system can however also be activated by the manual trigger switch on the control module, or optionally by an external manual trigger switch. The alarm and triggering system. A typical alarm and triggering system from KIDDE DEUGRA consists of a control module with a manual emergency switch (2) and detectors (4), with additional external manual trigger switches (1) as required. The extinguishing system. The extinguishing system consists of an extinguishing cylinder which incorporates an igniter body (3) and the extinguishing pipe (5) which is routed according to the application. The extinguishing agent is sprayed out extremely quickly via a perforated extinguishing pipe or powder nozzles. This is how it works. Within seconds after the outbreak of fire the pre-set alarm temperature is reached and the fire alarm-feedback switches the contact. The fire signal is processed in the control module and leads to activation of the igniter body, which in turn abruptly opens the valve on the extinguishing cylinder the extinguishing agent is propelled via the extinguishing pipe into the area to be protected. The systems are particularly easy to maintain. The extinguishing cylinders are refillable and even the fire alarm feedback switches are generally re-usable after a fire, without having to be reconditioned. The extinguishing cylinder. The size and number of extinguishing cylinders and also the type of extinguishing agent used depend on the relevant vehicle and the use to which it is put. Extinguishing cylinders from KIDDE DEUGRA are made of highquality annealed chromium molybdenumsteel. In addition, the inner surfaces are passivated against corrosion, using a special passivation technique. Thus you can rely on the longest possible working life of the pressure vessels. Our valves have been specially developed for fire-fighting applications. They are characterised by very short response times. For fire-fighting at the best time The optional manual trigger switch permits the fire-fighting system to be triggered from the ground, as an alternative to automatic triggering. The control module with manual emergency switch and comprehensive diagnostic functions is at the heart of the fire-fighting system. The igniter body opens the extinguishing cylinder valve extremely quickly. 1 2 3 3 4 2 1 The fire alarm feedback switches detect any fire quickly and reliably. 4 5
Different applications require different fire-fighting concepts. KIDDE DEUGRA offers tailor-made systems so that we can always offer exactly the right options for fire-fighting. Plus points switching off the engine In the event of fire the control module can optionally be programmed to switch the engine off. This prevents the extinguishing agent being expelled from the engine compartment by the power of the fan. The extinguishing agent can be discharged into a concentrated area and thus achieve the optimum effect. In addition, this stops the in-feed of oxygen and the addition of further combustible materials. Plus point for delaying the engine shutdown. For fire-fighting it is generally best to shut the engine down as quickly as possible and extinguish the fire. Depending on the application it may however be necessary that the vehicle remains driveable, either to leave a hazard area or to put down a load. Therefore the KIDDE DEUGRA control module has the option of a programmable engine switch-off delay for perfect adaptation to the requirements of the operating environment. Plus point manual triggering. Depending on the application it may be desirable that the fire is merely detected, and the actual extinguishing is performed manually by the operating personnel. With KIDDE DEUGRA systems, this too is no problem. Plus point two-shot system. A fire is reliably fought by quick detection and short response times. Due to external conditions and continued presence of the cause of the fire, it is possible a fire may re-ignite or a new fire arise. We therefore offer the option of equipping the fire fighting system with a further extinguishing cylinder which can be triggered automatically or manually after a delay period. Very good: two independent fire alarms and extinguishing areas. Do you operate large construction machines with separate engine compartments? We have a solution for that too: the division into two independent fire alarm and extinguishing areas, each with its own extinguishing cylinder. The best way is simply to ask for concrete advice without obligation from the KIDDE DEUGRA fire-fighting experts, based on your requirements. Optimally matched to your operating conditions Optionally the system can be operated in straight manual triggering mode. If required, the engine can be switched off before extinguishing is performed. Optionally the shutting down of the engine can be delayed, for instance to allow the vehicle to drive out of a hazard area. Redundant structuring of fire-fighting as a two-shot system.
C Temperature Fire-fighting is cost suppression. A commercial vehicle fire which generates smoke is detected relatively quickly and the fire brigade is on scene within minutes to extinguish the fire. The time between the fire starting, its discovery and extinguishing determines the extent of the damage. This ranges from high material losses through costs due to lack of availability, loss of business and increased insurance premiums and onto injuries to personnel. Adjacent goods and the building must be protected lest the fire spreads to them. Ignition and starting fire Flashover The only way to minimise damage and high losses is to achieve very quick detection and immediate extinguishing of the fire as soon as it starts. KIDDE DEUGRA offers you solutions based on our extensive technical experience gathered over the course of more than 50 years of successful fire-fighting. fully established fire subsiding fire Time Valuables that should be continually protected by fire-fighting systems from KIDDE DEUGRA. We have exactly the right solution for every commercial vehicle.
