014 Training and Employment Opportunities in the Biopharma Industry In association with

Employment Opportunities What are the Job Opportunities in the Biopharma Industry? The strong flow of investment into Ireland from biopharmaceutical companies is due to our flexible workforce and dedicated training programs, such as those available in NIBRT which develop specific skills required in the biopharma industry. Barry O Leary, CEO, IDA Ireland The biopharmaceutical industry is a critical component of the Irish economy generating exports of 55 billion in 2011 (50% of national total), 3 billion in taxes and with a total employment of 60,000. The industry provides a wide range of excellent employment opportunities across all levels for operators, technicians, engineers, analysts, graduates, administration, management and support staff. In addition, graduates from NIBRT s Springboard courses are well positioned for opportunities in the related pharma, medical devices and food science industries. The biopharma industry has seen significant recent job announcements including: May 2014 50 jobs BioMarin expands its Dublin hub April 2014 270 jobs Ethicon Biosurgery Ireland invests in Limerick April 2014 200 jobs Alexion unveils future expansion plans in Dublin April 2014 100 jobs Recruitment campaign from Eli Lilly in Kinsale, Co Cork Feb 2014 50 jobs Jazz Pharmaceuticals breaks ground on new facility in Athlone Jan 2014 40 jobs BioMarin launch of manufacturing operations in Cork Dec 2013 300 jobs Regeneron establishes world class facility in Limerick We have recently employed graduates of the NIBRT biopharma Springboard programme. A key challenge to MSD as we started up our site in Carlow was to recruit candidates with the required skillsets to work in a highly regulated biopharmaceutical environment. This course offered a range of modules to give candidates a broad knowledge of the biopharmaceutical industry and the processes involved in a cleanroom environment. The extensive sessions in NIBRT s impressive training facility reinforced the theory and gave the candidates the practical skills we required. David McGrath, Training Lead, MSD Ireland (Carlow) NIBRT Page 1

Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton TD, NIBRT Springboard student Doireann Flynn and Dr Reg Shaw NIBRT CEO at NIBRT s Careers in Biopharma event. Graduate Testimonials Paul D Arcy (now with Mylan) I come from a construction background so I didn t really have the technical background in this area. The biopharmaceutical industry is a thriving sector and I knew that this is where I wanted to work. I wanted to challenge myself so I enrolled on one of NIBRT s biopharma Springboard programmes. I believe the training and extensive career coaching I received helped me secure this role. Helen O Leary (now with a Biopharmaceutical Company based in Dublin) I had 20 years previous experience in the pharmaceutical industry but needed to up-skill to enter the biopharmaceutical industry. I saw NIBRT advertised in our local newspaper and felt this course offered me the opportunity to update my skills while gaining a recognized qualification. The NIBRT Springboard course provided me with a strong foundation in biopharmaceutical technology while also giving me hands on practical experience of new processes and practices within the industry. I was also able to work on and improve my CV and interview skills which gave me confidence in looking for employment. This was a real benefit in helping to obtain my current job. I would definitely recommend the course to anyone - either looking to enter the industry or intending to up-skill. NIBRT is a fantastic training facility. Michael I. Millerick Ph.D. (now with Genzyme) I am currently working as a Quality Technical Analyst at Genzyme Waterford and I am responsible for introducing new Quality processes for new drug products coming on site. I came from an academic background, being awarded a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Trinity College Dublin, but wanted to make a move toward industry R&D. I found that I lacked the GMP focus required for industry roles. I enrolled in one of NIBRT s Biopharma and Healthcare courses, as NIBRT has a very good reputation with all the major biopharmaceutical companies in Ireland and they are recognised as one of the most advanced training sites in Ireland for the biopharmaceutical industry. I found the course helped me make the cultural transition from academia to industry and prepared me for my current role. Additionally, the extensive career coaching helped me succeed in the interview process. I highly recommend NIBRT to help you achieve your career goals.
