Peer-reviewed Health Paper Health Paper Instructions Worth 30 points in Three Stages - Please look at our weekly calendar for Due Dates Instructions: In your 1-2 page paper describing the health peer-review article you read YOU MUST CLEARLY STATE YOUR SOURCE - TITLE OF ARTICLE, AUTHOR, JOURNAL AND YEAR at the beginning of your paper on the front page. Steps to Find Your Peer-Reviewed Health Article: 1. Go to the www.lavc.edy website. 2. Click on the Library link on the LAVC Home Page 3. Click on Electronic Resources (either on or off campus) 4. Click on Gale InfoTrac 5. Either click on Health Reference Academic as a useful database to find your Peer-Reviewed research health article or find another database in the long list provided that interests you (as long as it is related to health). 6. When you get into a database, input some keywords for a health article (i.e. diabetes or cancer or fitness). If you want to find a more specific article do an advanced search type in a few words like cancer AND treatments available. 7. Also define your search by putting limits on you search like Peer-Review Full-Text articles. You don't want only an abstract or a review. You are looking for the full research article that includes the abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion conclusion. The article you find should be about 3000-6000 words or about 4-8 pages in length. Check with me if you find an article but you are not sure if it is right for this assignment. 8. Finding an article can take some time so start this paper now. You can also go to the LAVC library where one of the librarians would be happy to help you. And they are fast! So if you are getting no where on your own - ASK FOR HELP! You will be surprised how much easier more efficient you are if you ask for help. Criteria for your Peer-Review Health Research Article: 1. Find a recent (within the last 3-5 years) peer-reviewed health article to review. You will need to read the article you choose, take notes then outline the highlights of the article in a 1-2 page typed paper using the following guidelines. 2. Begin your paper by introducing yourself your major or educational interest. 3. Then, introduce your article by providing a brief description/definition of your health topic. Share the highlights of the article, the trend, the movement, etc. as it applies. Assume your reader has no knowledge of the health topic/article you have chosen. Start with a basic introduction an interesting fact or statistic to interest your audience. 4. Explain why your health article provides information that is useful to you perhaps also useful to your audience. Describe the population that might benefit from knowing this information. If your article is regarding a disease or injury are there prevention tips that are provided. Are there any risk factors that pertain to this injury or illness. Are these risk factors controllable or uncontrollable? 5. Please spell check your typed paper for any grammar or syntax errors. You should have at least one other person read your paper give you feedback. The writing center at Los Angeles Valley College is also available in the Humanities building near the Admissions building if you need feedback or any help with writing your paper. They would love to help you it doesn t take long to get a few

corrections on a 1-2 page paper. Check to see if you need an appointment. Remember, you should never submit your first draft!
