Life span development. Students acquire a foundation knowledge of human development in the social environment over the life span. Normal development stages and impacts of social systems on the growth of individuals in diverse populations of rural areas is emphasized. Restricted to admission to the program. Course Objectives 1. Understand how biological development influences human behavior 2. Describe the various theories that have been used to explain human development 3. Demonstrate an understanding of the major stages of identity development 4. Discuss issues facing the contemporary family in society 5. Identify the tasks and roles necessary for group leadership 6. Identify contemporary issues for community and organizational practice 7. Understand the importance of spiritual development for social work practice Required Textbook Hutchison, E. Belmont, CA: Brooks/Cole. Journal articles as assigned by professor Course Requirements 1. You are required to read the chapters or additional readings. I will test that occasionally. 2. Maintain 100% attendance during the 8 weeks of this class. 5 points will be taken away from the overall grade for each missing class. You will be given an automatic F if you miss more than 2 classes. 3. Participate in class discussions, complete silence will be noticed and addressed. 4. Submit all the assignments on time, late submissions will cost 2 point his deduction for each day late. 5. Participate in off-class online class activities as mentioned in the syllabus 6. Should be able to listen to online lectures that the instructor may sometime post. 7. Access to Internet and proficiency with computers and necessary software tools such as words, PowerPoint, Internet browsing, and sending attachments are prerequisite for this class. If you are not familiar with any of these please talk to me so that special recommendation could be made. Class Policy

2 1. Plagiarism is not accepted in this class. Ignorance of plagiarism is not an excuse. Please visit this website and integrate yourself about plagiarism. The instructor will randomly use the software turn it in to detect plagiarized text. 2. Private information that students may share with instructor will be kept confidential. 3. A grade of incomplete will be only given when the student is unable to complete course requirement for reasons beyond his or her control. A student wishing an incomplete must be passing the course, must submit a written request stating the nature of the emergency which makes the incomplete necessary. And in completing this course prevents the students from entering the next course in the sequence until the incomplete is completed. Under no circumstances and incompletely be given if the student is failing the course. 4. This course was evaluated at the end of the semester following the universities policy of evaluation. 5. No late submission will be accepted for undocumented technology breakdown. If your computer hangs or if you lose any data while submitting your assignments you should take a screenshot of the computer to suggest that you indeed tried and the computer broke down. If you had ed me the assignment then you should keep the sent items saved in the sent folder of your mailbox so that you can show me documentation. 6. During class no Facebooking/Twittering/ or use of any other social networking websites will be tolerated. If students are found to be using such websites they would be penalized with one point deduction from the Overall grade. 7. Texting on browsing Internet on your cell phone is only allowed during the break time in class. The class will take three 15 min. breaks during one class period. Students are only allowed to browse Internet or text using their mobile or computer devices during the break time. Texting is a distraction in class, so if a student found to be texting, they would be given to warnings before 2 points should be taken out of the overall grade for texting in class. If you re bored in class try asking a question. 8. If you plan to excuse yourself in the middle of the class you need to let the instructor know beforehand or writing to the instructor after leaving the class. 9. No review of draft paper will be entertained 5 days before submission date. Assignments Weekly Quizzes: Weekly take home quizzes will be administered on Desire2Learn (D2L). After completion of lectures. 8 quizzes will be given to test your daily reading preparation. Every quiz will be worth 5 points. All quiz questions will be either multiple choice or true/false. Every week quizzes will be uploaded online and students could take it between Wednesdays (4 PM) till Monday 4 P.M. Each quiz is 25 minute duration. (10X4=40) Class Presentations: Two or Three students should pair-up to conduct a class presentation on a given weekly topic. The presenters should sign up their names with the instructor and speak with the instructor during class recess about how to prepare for the class presentation. Any topic that interests you from the course outline you should pick up a presentation. Presenters need to speak with the instructor to plan their presentation content. The class presentation will be based on a content The

3 presentation is worth 5 points Twit-a-Question (less than 140 words) Twit A Question Discussion: Every week after doing the reading you are required to ask a couple of questions that shows your reflective reading of the material. You are not required to do any summary of the readings? But ask a question that came to your mind that show your reflection, you are not supposed to repeat anybody else s question, you can ask a question based on your experience with yourself, with others, with clients, on policies anything that involved human behavior. For a week s reading you are required to ask your question online on D2L before 9 AM each Tuesday for that day s class. (10X1 = 10) Paper Discussion (5 X 2 = 10) There will be 5 discussions that will be separately allocated for the construction of your final paper. These paper discussions will be used to help you form your ideas better for the paper and you will get some instant feedback from you. The point for the discussion will be allotted only when we discuss online or when you stop receiving feedback cues from me. In these discussions I will ask you to post on your topic, your method, your usage of theory, dimensions and stage approaches for your paper. Interview Transcript/Note submission (5): You are required to interview a person as a part of your final paper. Once you submit a one page summary on how the Interview went, where did you do the interview, how long did it take, and what types of notes you have taken and submit that in a drop box then you shall get the 5 points. Human Behavior Analysis Paper (30 points): You are required to conduct an indepth interview of a Human and carry out a behavioral analysis. You will conduct a clinical as well as structural analysis of that person s behaviors using the theories and dimensions described in the book. The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate your understanding of development across the lifespan through your thoughtful application of multi-disciplinary theories and approaches discussed in class. This assignment requires you to create a detailed description of a person that you interview and develop a narrative that follows your human throughout his or her life span. 1. Begin by introducing your human. Provide demographic characteristics of your human including: gender, socio-economic status background, ethnicity, cultural background, family composition, parental characteristics, physical and psychological health of family members. Remember that these demographics characteristics will impact your developing human at each stage! For example, in the pregnancy and prenatal development, discussion will include, but is not limited to: development through the trimesters; involvement of the father (however applicable); mother s emotional state; fetal development; impact of culture on pregnancy; mother s health and nutrition; reactions to birth, etc. The same application of the material to your growing human will take place for each chapter up until the death of your human. 2. Apply the psychosocial stage from each chapter to your developing human. Application includes an accurate description (brief) of the relevant crisis and the experiences of your human that impact the resolution (positive or negative or somewhere in between) of that crisis. Be sure to carry through the results of a stage s resolution in a logical manner to later stages, and explicitly describe the consequences in those later stage sections.

4 3. Apply other relevant theories and research to your human within each stage. For instance, if you are describing a toddler s gender identity development, accurately reference relevant theory or research (as described in our class text, for instance) when you describe the child s experiences and parental reactions. 4. Do not be limited to information provided in your text. Consulting the literature can only strengthen your final project. Include all references. 5. Research and apply the concept of resiliency in at least two of your stages of development: one will focus on resiliency in childhood (< 18 years old), and the second will focus on adulthood (>18 years old). For this specific integration of resiliency, you will need to reference at least 2 professional journal articles to support you work. Include your articles as an attachment to your final project submission. As always, use APA style for referencing journal articles. 6. You may find that it is very easy to write a lot of material for this project. A good rule of thumb is to write no more than two pages per stage. 7. Use headers and sub-headers to organize your work. 8. Assignments are to be written in standards APA 6 th edition style. No exceptions. This paper is due on the last day of class.
