Revision Preparation: Safety Mgr Authority: Presient Issuing Dept: Safety Page: Page 1 of 11 Purpose is committe to proviing a safe an healthy working environment for all employees. Musculoskeletal isorers (MSD) account for a majority of reporte injuries an we must minimize the risk an incience of MSDs. To achieve this goal, s each worksite to establish an maintain a MSD, Lifting an Hanling Loas Program with the following elements: Ongoing training of management, supervisors, an employees (incluing new hires) on MSD awareness hazars an control measures Training of specialize staff (esignate Representative, JHSC members) on MSD hazar assessment an control measures Tracking of MSD statistics MSD hazar ientification an assessment (see MSD Hazar Ientification form) Control of MSD hazars through the application of engineering an/or aministrative controls Proactively integrating ergonomics principles into workplace esign an work techniques A realization that personal protective equipment may only be use as a substitute for engineering or aministrative controls if it is use in circumstances in which those controls are not practicable. Key Responsibilities Safety Manager Develops local Lifting an Hanling Loas Programs for all worksites in accorance with this proceure an ensures all employees are aware of the ments of the local Lifting an Hanling Loas Program. Communicate, promote an support the MSD, Lifting an Hanling Loas Program. Conuct MSD training sessions an/or provie MSD training materials. Maintain recors of MSD training that they provie in a manner that supports accuracy an ease of access for monitoring purposes. Monitor corrective actions taken as ientifie on incient reports. Support supervisors an the worksite JHSC in the Lifting an Hanling Loas Program process. Assist in the investigation of MSD incients to aress injury hazars. Bring to the attention of management any MSD hazars ientifie uring their investigations, auits or inspections. Ensure istribution an awareness of MSD Hazar Ientification Forms. Provie input into purchasing specifications for new tools, equipment an furniture as neee to reuce MSD hazars. Provie input into the evelopment of safe work proceures to reuce MSD hazars. Revision Preparation: Safety Mgr Authority: Presient Issuing Dept: Safety Page: Page 2 of 11 Worksite Manager Responsible for the implementation an maintenance of the Lifting an Hanling Loas Program for their facility an ensuring all assets are mae available for compliance with the proceure. He or she will also: Ensure that all worksite epartments implement an maintain the provisions of the Lifting an Hanling Loas Program. Seek regular reports to ensure that their worksite is in compliance with the Lifting an Hanling Loas Program. Manual lifting equipment such as ollies, han trucks, lift-assist evices, jacks, carts, hoists must be provie for employees. Other engineering controls such as conveyors, lift tables, an work station esign shoul be consiere. Use of provie manual lifting equipment by employees must be enforce. Employees Shall atten all MSD relate training for the task they are performing. Practice MSD prevention strategies as per MSD training. Comply with safe work proceures. Correctly use the equipment provie by, accoring to manufacturers recommenations. Report to the supervisor any unsafe acts, unsafe tasks, unsafe conitions or equipment problems that create MSD hazars. Report any MSD incients to the supervisor an cooperate in the investigation process. Proceure Worksite Assessment Before manual lifting is performe, a hazar assessment must be complete. The assessment must consier size, bulk, an weight of the object(s), if mechanical lifting equipment is, if two-man lift is, whether vision is obscure while carrying an the walking surface an path where the object is to be carrie. The assessment shall also inclue: Use of the MSD Hazar Ientification form containe within this proceure Physical Demans o Neck Back Shouler Wrist o Han o Knee Ankle/ o Feet Force Require an Working Distance Uncontrolle copy if printe. Work Postures o Is the back is curve too much or in a stoope position? o Is the back is twiste uring movements? o Is the neck bent or twiste? o Are the arms away from the boy? o Are the wrists flexe, extene or pinche positions? Repetitive Use of Similar Muscles o Do employees perform movements over an over in the same way Static Muscle Use an Duration o Do employees hol any of the above work postures for > 20 sec.? o Stan for long perios with their knees locke? o Stan in one position without moving or stretching? Contact Stress o Do employees put localize pressure on any part of their boy? Work Space Layout an Conitions o Are there working heights, reaches in workspace, equipment, tool esign, storage conitions, etc., that cause or contribute to employees experiencing any of the physical emans risk factors? o Also consier seating, floor surfaces, the characteristics of objects hanle, incluing size an shape, loa conition an weight istribution, an container as well as tool an equipment hanles. Organization of Work o Are there work processes, monotonous job tasks, work recovery cycles, task variability, work rate, machine pace tasks or peak activity emans that cause or contribute to rushing, frustration, fatigue or other visible signs of stress? Environmental Conitions o Are employees expose to poor lighting, vibration, col or hot air/win/water? Work Controls must ensure base on the assessment, implement control measures to eliminate, minimize or reuce, so far as is reasonably practicable, the risk of musculoskeletal injury to the worker. Revision Preparation: Safety Mgr Authority: Presient Issuing Dept: Safety Page: Page 4 of 11 Hanling Heavy or Awkwar Loas will take all practicable means to aapt the heavy or awkwar loas to facilitate lifting, holing or transporting by workers or to otherwise minimize the manual hanling. Those inclue: Where use of lifting equipment is impractical or not possible, two man lifts must be use. All loas carrie on hancarts shall be secure. All awkwar type loas shall be secure to prevent tippage. Aitional methos inclue: o reucing the weight of the loa by iviing it into two or more manageable loas o increasing the weight of the loa so that no worker can hanle it an therefore mechanical assistance is o reucing the capacity of the container o reucing the istance the loa must be hel away from the boy by reucing the size of the packaging o proviing han hols o team lift the object with two or more workers o improve the layout of the work process to minimize the nee to move materials o reorganize the work metho(s) to eliminate or reuce repeate hanling of the same object o rotate workers to jobs with light or no manual hanling o use mobile storage racks to avoi unnecessary loaing an unloaing. Incients an Injuries If an employee reports symptoms of a MSI will: Musculoskeletal injuries cause by improper lifting must be investigate an ocumente. Incorporation of investigation finings into work proceures must be accomplishe to prevent future injuries. Injuries must be recore an reporte as by 29 CFR Part 1904. Review & Upating Lifting an Hanling Loas Program Supervision must perioically evaluate work areas an employees' work techniques to assess the potential for an prevention of injuries. New operations shoul be evaluate to engineer out hazars before work processes are implemente. Training shall ensure that a worker who may be expose to the possibility of musculoskeletal injury is traine in specific measures to eliminate or reuce that possibility. Our training shall inclue: General principles of ergonomics, Uncontrolle copy if printe. Vali on ay of printing only. Printe on: 26 April 2012 2:28 PM 2010
