Small Diameter Pipe Lining

Why line? 2013 reduction in lead levels Public health - vulnerable groups Unfeasible to replace customers pipe (80%) Outcome regulation Lining critical jigsaw price and sustainability of phosphate dosing.

Notes by Tim Evans, Technical Secretary FWR Wastewater Research & Industry Support Forum Pipe Restoration Services (PRS) is a Joint Venture of Morrison and PRT to deliver service pipe lining using epipe technology to the UK as a cost effective and sustainable solution to dissolved lead and leakage. Pipe Restoration Technologies, LLC was established in 1998. PRT is based in Las Vegas, USA, it focuses on developing product, equipment and process methods used in the business of in-place epoxy pipe lining of small diameter piping systems. Since 1998, PRT has emerged as a segment leader in the barrier coating and corrosion control industry. PRT provides specialized pipe lining technology used in the rehabilitation of piping systems and in the prevention of heavy metals, such as lead and copper, leaching from pipes into the drinking water supply. PRT services are provided in Europe, US, Canada, and Latin America. PRT holds multiple process patents with an ongoing portfolio of patents pending. PRT product lines include: epipe, minie, eliner, ACE DuraFlo, Pur PIPE. The blown in place epoxy lining was originally developed to solve pinhole leaks resulting from cuprosolvancy; the fact that it could also solve plumbosolvancy was realised later. epipe products are approved for contact with potable water in the USA, Canada, Spain, Belgium and Finland. WRAS and DWI are still in the process of approving epipe products for the UK. 9

Notes by Tim Evans, Technical Secretary FWR Wastewater Research & Industry Support Forum In Britain the current limit for lead in drinking water [at the customer s kitchen tap] is 25 µg/l but from the end of 2013 the limit will be 10 µg/l. In some areas it is difficult to achieve 25 µgpb/l whereas others are achieving 10 µgpb/l already. In terms of terminology, the communication pipe runs from the main to the customer s meter or stopcock; the service pipe runs from the meter to the start of the internal plumbing; generally the service pipe is 4x the length of the communications pipe. Since the sampling point for the drinking water regulations is the customer s tap, it is obvious that replacing the communications pipe would not answer plumbosolvancy issues. WRc has a Portfolio project on the subject CP428 Technology based solutions for lead The rheology of the resin is key. The technology is really applicable for smaller diameter pipes; it could be used up to 100mm diameter but any larger than this and the volume of air to move the resin through the pipe becomes impracticable. 10

Process

Notes by Tim Evans, Technical Secretary FWR Wastewater Research & Industry Support Forum After draining, the pipe is heated to 20-25 C. It is prepared by scouring with polyester granules which are adequate for removing scale and providing a key but not so abrasive as to damage the pipe. The gun in slide 16 is actually mixing the 2 pack epoxy resin. After the resin has been blown through the pipe leaving an approx 0.1mm coating, which probably has a life of 70 years or more. It is difficult to simulate long term stability but certainly there has been no deterioration in the 12 years that it has been deployed so far. There is a 2-stage curing process, comprising 1 hour with warm dry air followed by 1 hour with hot water. The return to service time is not more than 3 hours. Pipes can be lined through valves provided the valve is simply closed and reopened before the lining has cured. If there are several properties in a vicinity they can be lined in parallel, which reduces the on-site time per property. The cost of installation is no more than the cost of replacing the communication and the service pipe, to this can be added the opex savings of not dosing the water with phosphate and of the additional cost that imposes on wastewater treatment for phosphate removal. The cost of materials is about 30, to this would be added royalty and profit, on-site time for labour and amortisation of the equipment; if several properties are lined in parallel, with staggered starts, there would be an efficiency saving. For a water supply area with relatively few lead communication and service pipes, it would be possible to eliminate phosphate dosing for a modest capital investment. 17

The Conundrum

A section cut from a lined ½ lead pipe resting on 1mm graph paper, note the very smooth slightly rippled surface, which is a consequence of blown-in-place application
