Assess the role of the professional nurse in supporting veterans health, education and research COURSE DESCRIPTION MAIN CONFERENCE The purpose of this national annual conference, JOINING FORCES TO RESTORE LIVES: Nursing Education and Research in Veterans Health, is to support a comprehensive national initiative to include education about issues specific to veteran s health and advances in research into the nursing curriculum to better prepare nurses to care for military veterans and their families. The dynamic role of nursing professionals spanning nursing executives, scientists, researchers, educators, advanced practice nurses and registered nurses will engage in an educational forum specifically designed to provide current relevant core content to support veterans returning from war or deployment which face a variety of physical and psychological health care needs including: traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, suicidal ideation, homelessness, sexual trauma and substance abuse. A $100 cancellation fee will be assessed to cover administrative costs. There are no refunds for noshows or for cancellations received after October 1st, 2013; however, substitutions are welcome without penalty. USF Health reserves the right to cancel this activity due to unforeseen circumstances. In the event of such cancellation, only the registration fee will be returned to the registrant. USF Health will not be responsible for travel expenses incurred by the participant in case of cancellation. Fees include the course content, syllabus, certificate of attendance and food and beverage functions. No registration will be confirmed without full payment. Steele, United States Marine Corps (Retired), Associate Vice President for Veterans Research, University of South Florida and Executive Director of Military Partnerships, USF World Lieutenant General Martin R. Steele enlisted in the Marine Corps in January 1965, and rose from private to three-star general, serving three tours of duty on two continents, and culminated his military career as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Plans, Policies, and Operations at Headquarters, US Marine Corps, in Washington, DC in August of 1999. A decorated combat veteran with 34-1/2 years of service, General Steele is a recognized expert in the integration of all elements of national power and has broad experience in establishing and managing cutting edge strategic policies and programs. SPEAKER: Edward J. Hickling, PsyD Clinical Psychologist, Capital Psychological Associate Edward J. Hickling, PsyD is an internationally known psychologist, author and lecturer specializing in the area of post trauma disorders and psychological treatments. Dr. Hickling is a master therapist, having practiced for over 30 years. He has held numerous positions at Veterans Administration Medical Centers and Hospitals around the country. COURSE DESCRIPTION In addition, the Pre-Conference course Transforming Tragedy: Finding Growth Following Life s Traumas will be held on Sunday, October 20th, which summarizes the causes and treatment of adverse reactions to traumatic events in directly applicable ways. This knowledge adds novel applications to treatment that can be used immediately in one s clinical care with trauma survivors, such as returning veterans, community survivors of traumatic events, including rape, physical assault, community disasters and the other tragic events that occur in the lives of our patients. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to: Gain an understanding of the common features in current evidenced based psychological treatments for post traumatic disorders Integrate findings from resilience and post traumatic growth literature into practical treatment considerations Learn how to provide personal narrative interventions in a flexible, evidence influenced fashion Gain practical application of relaxation and mindfulness techniques Apply common elements of cognitive changes and exposure based treatment in a personalized, flexible fashion while remaining true to current evidenced treatments ACCREDITATION NURSES: USF Health is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation.
