Prof. Albert Hofman, MD, PhD Scientific Director, Netherlands Institute for Health Sciences Having worked as a Lab researcher in Colombia, I wanted to broaden my research scope and I knew epidemiology was one of the main areas I needed to learn if I want to make a big contribution to the research on complex diseases. The courses and training at NIHES have completely fulfilled my expectations and helped me acquire the ability to cope with scientific problems and challenges. Paula K. Bautista Niño, MSc NIHES MSc in Health Sciences - Specialisation Epidemiology
OUR MASTER OF SCIENCE PROGRAMMES We offer a range of Master of Science (MSc) programmes in quantitative medicine and the health sciences. These include one-year and two-year programmes: One year full-time or two-year part-time programme in Health Sciences, two-year full time programme in Health Sciences, two-year full-time in Clinical Research. Roughly half of the curriculum is dedicated to courses and the other half to research. By combining compulsory programme-specific courses and elective courses, you can tailor your programme to your interests and professional needs. OPPORTUNITIES FOR BACHELOR S GRADUATES If you lack research experience, but already have a Bachelor s degree in a discipline related to clinical medicine and public health, take a look at our two-year, full-time MSc programme Health Sciences, with specialisations in Epidemiology, Clinical Epidemiology, Genetic Epidemiology, Public Health and Health Economics. OPPORTUNITIES FOR MASTER GRADUATES AND HEALTH PROFESSIONALS If you have research experience and at least a Master s degree in a discipline related to clinical medicine and public health, see our one-year, full-time Master of Science programme in Health Sciences. It has specialisations in Epidemiology, Clinical Epidemiology, Genetic Epidemiology, Public Health, and Pharmaco-epidemiology. If you wish to combine your studies with work, you might consider attending the one-year programme part-time. You could then spread the curriculum over two years, according to an individual planning. In the case of Epidemiology, Clinical Epidemiology and Genetic Epidemiology, you can also choose to follow the Summer School Programme. This allows you to spread your courses over three consecutive Erasmus Summer Programmes plus two winter/ spring sessions and subsequent elective periods. SHORT COURSES Year-round, we offer short courses at three levels (basic, intermediate and advanced) in specific areas of quantitative medical, clinical and public health research. While some courses have special requirements, most are open to anyone with a good working knowledge of English. Check out our website for up-to-date details of our application and admission procedures as well as the application deadlines. NIHES publications have been cited twice as much as the world average of publications in the same research domain. ERASMUS SUMMER PROGRAMME Each year, the Erasmus Summer Programme provides international students and professionals with an invaluable opportunity to spend three weeks in Holland, bringing themselves right up to date in the health sciences. In just three weeks, the Erasmus Summer Programme provides 30 courses on state-of-the-art biomedical topics. Each course is designed to fully satisfy the needs of students with a specific interest, such as clinical medicine, general practice, public health, epidemiology, genetics or biostatistics. WWW.ERASMUSSUMMERPROGRAMME.NL ERASMUS WINTER PROGRAMME Also taught by leading international experts, the Erasmus Winter Programme emphasizes the understanding of principles and methods of clinical research. This programme not only focuses on the basics common to all research in clinical medicine, but also provides advanced courses for those particularly interested in clinical trials, in drug safety research, and in decision making in clinical medicine. It also includes various courses in biostatistics. WWW.ERASMUSWINTERPROGRAMME.NL With a background in medicine I always hoped I could expand my knowledge in the field of epidemiology and research. The moment I got the opportunity to participate in the NIHES Master of Health Sciences specializing in Clinical Epidemiology during my PhD, I didn t hesitate at all! The scientific programs, with experts in the field, professionally guided me through my research training. They provided me with the many tools that are required in a future career in research. And now, having finished my master, I can truly declare the NIHES in Rotterdam is the scientific (epi) centre of the world! John O.
