THE MOSTLY 1900 IRREGULAR NEWSLETTER #19 MAY 2001 Publisher -Editor: Joost A. Gompels, P.O.Box 100 Tybee Island, GA 31328-0100 Phone (912) 786-0949, fax (912) 786-6072, e-mail: Joostg@aol.com; Technical Editor: Henry Wessells III, 800 North Valley Rd., Paoli, PA 19301 Phone 610 644 5181 fax 610 644 2036 This publication is produced and circulated privately and solely for the benefit and enjoyment of owners and admirers of Alfa Romeo cars of the 1900 genre. The purpose includes the cultivation of an accurate register of North American 1900 cars, provision of a clearing house for the exchange of thoughts, questions, information and needs. Coypright may apply to quoted sources. THE MOSTLY can be contacted at addresses shown above. Millennium quote. LIFE WORKS OUT OK FOR THOSE PEOPLE LIVING AND WORKING WITH ALFA s. Martin Swig Publisher s Bit It is pleasing to have reached the point where the register is to be published. Hopefully readers will hail this event as overdue. Two extracts are presented: a) by model b) the NAR Communications Directory Other sorts are available upon request It is necessary to comment on the communications directory. It is presented as a working document that your Registrar uses. We expect this will be found useful and we hope it fosters owner interaction. Listed are some prospective owners, some past owners who wish to continue and, we hope, are prospective too. Also included are some suppliers and vendors who share our enthusiasm and last but not least some fellow enthusiasts under no particular category. An entry ZZZZ??? may intrigue you. If you guessed it means dunno you were exactly right and the zzz-s are there to ensure it lists at the end. The car is thought to be in the US according to Peter M. Is there someone who can help identify its whereabouts and owner? You will note that there are several gaps and omissions. These are neither accidental nor deliberate. We wish there were none. If you can fill in some of the blanks please do so at once and earn our eternal gratitude. The NA Register is always work in progress. If we have erred in recording any information we crave forgiveness and beg correction. Phone, fax, email, or snailmail but please do it at once. To minimize any abuse for commercial purposes, we have restricted the mailing of this issue to owners only, with the exception of Sra. Ruocco, the Registro Touring, and John DeBoer. Your comments and suggestions will be more than welcome. Editor s bit Light duty is being pulled this month as the issue is almost fully taken up with extracts from the 41 page register. Register One of the earliest SSZ cars *01747* has been listed for several years in the International Register as an unidentified survivor. It surfaced recently for sale in Hemmings, and it s provenance is being studied. Another *01747* is known to exist as a replica SSZ on a 1900 Berlina chassis! A mystery spider of beautiful proportions and a 3000CM/Disco type nose, with Spanish plates, has turned Mostly #19 May 2001 1

up in Italy. Its provenance is also under review. Technical The 1900 Cylinder Head By Carter Hendricks In the last Mostly Conrad Stevenson wrote how to replace the 1900 cylinder head with that from the later 102 series 2000. He repeated the idea that the 2000 heads have the later, lighter, simpler valvetrain with shim and bucket tappets instead of the heavy pre-war unique but typical Alfa threaded valve stem assemblies. The 2000 parts are later, but most of the rest is open to elaboration. For now, let me just talk about weight. One of the advantages which Conrad and I have is that we actually get to see and feel the parts. I was surprised when I first held in my hands the light, simple 1900 valvetrain. This morning I again weighed a typical used 102 and 1900 intake valve assembly: used parts, maybe not design weight, but close enough: Part 102 1900 grams grams Valve 123 109 Follower 70 24+39=63 Keepers 33 0 Shim? 0 Total 226+ 163 The 1900 springs are just a little heavier than the 102. Half the difference is about 5 grams. Weighing parts seems silly, but the false idea that the 1900 valve train was heavy is just another mistake in the popular Alfa Romeo history. Thanks Carter. We look forward to additional comments from others. Tom Shaughnessy sent us some notes on the costs of his restoration still in progress. Tom owns Ghia *01837* ex Symbolic and we imagined it was in fine shape. Tom reports as follows: metal shop straightening $14000, bumpers $5000, paint shop $3000, metal shop $2500 to fix a defect (noticeable only to me ), back to the paint shop $5000, metal shop for chrome fittings and fitting $4200 and now it is in the paint shop again, $?. Tom thinks there are many readers with little idea about how much it costs to do it right and that although it is an Alfa (and not one of his several important 50 s Ferraris, Ed.) I happen to like my goofyoneoff car and felt it worthy of a first class restoration. Tom says he wants to encourage others to do it right and not to stand for short cuts. We agree. Thanks Tom. But, we would add that if pockets are shallow, one can equally appreciate seeing a good driver being produced provided there are no shortcuts in any of the mechanical work done. Podium Hail to the final 6 entrants of Alfa 1900 s in the Cal. Mille. Dave Sydorick sent us some exciting pictures of the group. I cannot recall seeing that many 1900 s photographed in one place, and each looking most attractive. Dave noted that all Alfa 1900 s performed flawlessly, thus confirming again that a 1900 properly restored and properly used (which means regularly) is a very reliable piece of machinery. Let s try for a dozen next year, if Martin can stand it. For sale We regret to report that Bill Trosten passed away in March. In his estate is his interesting T-4 *10023* for sale by his brother Leonard. Call for details if interested. Mostly #19 May 2001 2
