March 13, 2013 BMS-ANed spring meeting 2013: Biometry Award winners workshop During the Spring Meeting 2012 of BMS-ANed in Wageningen Dr. Jelle Goeman was awarded by the president of BMS-ANed the Biometry Award 2012 for his paper: Goeman J.J. and Solari A. (2011). Multiple Testing for Exploratory Research. Statistical Science Volume 26, Number 4, 584-597 On March 13, 2013 Dr. Jelle Goeman organized the BMS-ANed spring meeting: Biometry Award winner workshop in Leiden. Theme: Multiple testing for exploratory research Number of interested participants: around 50 Speakers: - Jenny Barrett (University of Leeds) - David Elston (Biomathematics & Statistics Scotland) - Kristel Van Steen (University of Liège) - Jelle Goeman (Leiden University Medical Center) - Aldo Solari (University of Milano-Bicocca) - Yudi Pawitan (Karolinska Institutet) September 2, 2013. PSDM event: Risk-based Monitoring: opportunities and challenges in clinical development Organized by the PSDM working group and hosted by Astellas, Leiden, The Netherlands. Speakers: - Andy Lawton (Global Head of Data Management, Boehringer Ingelheim Ltd, United Kingdom) - Frederic Hlavac (Global Studies Manager, F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd, Switzerland) - Hein Fennema (Director Late Development Statistics, MSD, The Netherlands) November 29, 2013 BMS-ANed-PSDM Fall Meeting, Leiden The annual Fall meeting of biostatisticians, united in BMS-ANed, was dedicated to the Future of Biostatistics. On Friday afternoon 29 November, a large crowd of some 90 biostatisticians came to the LUMC in Leiden to find out what the future had in store for them. President Jeanine Houwing welcomed the participants on behalf of BMS-ANed and the PSDM (Pharmaceutische Statistiek en Data Management) sectie to Leiden. The two keynote speakers, Egbert Biesheuvel (MSD, Chair PSDM) and Piet Daas (CBS), spoke each about the new challenges and opportunities in pharmaceutical statistics and official statistics, respectively, for instance as a result of ubiquitous data. After the break there was a lively debate on the shared future of statistics and biostatistics between the participants of the meeting and 3

six representatives of various statistical communities. Fred van Eeuwijk (Wageningen UR) represented Agricultural Statistics, Paul Eijlers (Erasmus MC) the chemometricians, Hendriek Boshuizen (RIVM) shared the point of view of statistics with the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, Paul Koopman (Abbott Laboratories) spoke about the quality control represented by the Biostatisticians Registry in the Netherlands, Nynke Krol gave a refreshing view from the Young Statisticians and Ronald Brand (Leiden University Medical Center) made the connection between biostatistics and data management. Among the many interesting contributions to the day two points stood out: in order for biostatistics to remain relevant in a highly data-driven future, it will need to embrace the methodological changes that are currently driven more by computer science. On the other hand, a successful future will need the informed and model-driven approaches from biostatisticians rooted both in the methodological as well as in the biomedical application field in order to make real use of these methodological changes in a meaningful way. BMS-ANed participated in the organisation of the 4th Channel Network Conference The 4th Channel Network Conference was held on Wednesday 3rd July 2013 to Friday 5th July 2013. This conference was hosted at the University of St Andrews. Talk slides are available for British and Irish Region Biometric Society members and for those you attended the conference at http://bir.biometricsociety.org/events/channelnetworkconference. Annual General Meeting 2013 The Annual General Meeting of BMS-ANed took place on July 4, 2013 in St. Andrews (UK). The minutes of the assembly are available on www.bms-aned.nl. The number of interested participants was 15. Agenda: 1. Opening 2. Agenda 3. Minutes previous general meeting dd. December 19, 2012 4. Announcements 5. Annual report 2012 BMS/ANed 6. Financial report 2012 ANed 7. Board replacements. 8. Working Groups, including register of biostatisticians 9. Any other business 10.
