LOCAL WORK ENVIRONMENT The Department of Cardiology at Austin Health is committed to providing quality and compassionate care to patients with all forms of heart disease. The department has a strong clinical, teaching and research focus. The inpatient clinical service is located at the Austin Hospital and comprises a ward facility (Ward 5 East) with 30 dedicated cardiac and thoracic beds, including 6 cardiac critical care beds. Outpatient clinics are conducted at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital. A state-of-the-art diagnostic area (5 North) adjacent to the ward supports the cardiac catheterisation laboratories and non-invasive laboratories. A day recovery area contains 12 monitored beds for patients undergoing elective day procedures. Strong links exist with the Department of Cardiac Surgery at Austin Health. 1
The Electrophysiology Service Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating the clinical service for patients undergoing electrophysiology procedures and device implants throughout the continuum of care in the inpatient and outpatient environment. The position is located at the Austin campus. 3. POSITION OBJECTIVE The Electrophysiology Service Coordinator will work within the multidisciplinary team to deliver expert clinical management of Cardiology patients who require electrophysiology procedures and/ or device implants from access to the facility, procedural expertise, patient discharge and patient follow-up in the outpatient setting. 4. POSITION REQUIREMENTS Position specific Perform the duties of this position efficiently to the standards of the Department of Cardiology. Co-ordinate and communicate daily management and discharge plans for all inpatients in the heart rhythm management service with the aim of achieving the best patient outcomes. This process involves a multi-disciplinary approach. Foster strong communication links between the patient, patient s family, multidisciplinary health care team and external agencies. Coordinate and assist cardiology booking staff to maintain an effective preadmission process for patients undergoing heart rhythm management procedures that ensures appropriate screening of potential pre-procedural and discharge problems. Assessing patients prior to their admission by; Ensuring diagnostic tests such as Echo, CT scan have been performed and results are available Required blood test results are available Management of anti arrhythmic therapy according to clinical guidelines in consultation with medical staff. Management of anticoagulation therapy according to clinical guidelines in consultation with medical staff. Assume a clinical leadership role in the procedural environment, providing expert advice, guidance and support to the multidisciplinary team and patient. Assessing patients post procedure and prior to discharge to ensure that patients have received the appropriate discharge instructions and medication regime according to clinical guidelines in consultation with the medical staff. Provide phone support for patients at home and to GP s in relation to EP and pacing procedures, workup and follow-up. Coordinate the Database for the Heart Rhythm management service. Organise the EP and pacing support for cases from Medical Device companies and assist in providing technical expertise during electrophysiology procedures and device implants when appropriate Initiate quality improvement in the patient care continuum by drawing upon data analysis and best practice guidelines. 2
Assist the cardiology secretaries and pacing technologists with appropriate scheduling of outpatient appointments for the pacing clinic and heart rhythm management procedures. Facilitate expedited outpatient appointments for selected patients in consultation with medical staff. Develop / update patient education material in line with Austin Health Best Practice and Patient Education Network guidelines and evaluate such with regards to usage and effectiveness. Work closely with all cardiology areas in initiating, developing, implementing and evaluating quality activities to assist with the improvement of clinical performance and current practice. Participate in relevant committee processes, attend relevant meetings and prepare and submit reports as required. Participate in the emergency incident response activities, as defined within the Emergency Response Manual, as and when required, at the direction of management. 5. KEY SELECTION CRITERIA Essential for Performance of the Position Cardiac Technologist with relevant NASPE and/ or CEPEA certification* and/ or a Registered Nurse, Division 1, with a Cardiac/ Critical Care post graduate qualification with the relevant NASPE and/or CEPEA certification. * Previous clinical procedural experience in the cardiac catheterisation laboratory environment (minimum of 2 years). Experience in service/ outpatient clinic coordination. Highly developed leadership skills. Demonstrated high level communication skills written and verbal Commitment to high standards of patient care Demonstrated knowledge of professional standards, legal and ethical requirements Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team Advanced problem solving skills.
