If you would like to receive the e-newsletter prior to registration, send us an email at iss@uwinnipeg.ca GET WHAT YOU NEED Study Permits - All international students must present their original study permit to ISS upon arrival. ISS can assist you in applying for a study permit extension or other change of condition to your study permit. Health Insurance - The ISS can assist students in determining if they are eligible for Manitoba Provincial Health Care coverage and, if eligible, how to register for it. The ISS can also assist students in understanding which additional health insurance plan(s) are required during your time of study. Work Permits - ISS verifies students eligibility for Off- Campus Work Permit. In order to qualify, students must have completed at least 6 months of full-time study (at least 9 credits per term) and maintain satisfactory academic standing. Students must meet with the ISS staff for details and requirements prior to applying for the work permit. GET INVOLVED Cultural and Social Activities - Many activities are organized for international students, including iceskating, skiing, trips to the beach, hockey games, festivals, and more! Study, Work and Live in Winnipeg, Manitoba WORK On Campus - International students who have a valid study permit and are full-time status are permitted to work on campus as soon as they arrive in Canada. Work availability: The University of Winnipeg Bookstore Cafeterias and Campus Restaurants Athletic facilities Registration and administration offices Research assistants to professors Lab demonstrators Off Campus - Students who maintain full-time student status and are in good academic standing can apply for an off campus work permit. There are many job opportunities in downtown right next to The University of Winnipeg. Co-op And Internship Programs Some academic programs at the University of Winnipeg include work experience as part of the curriculum. Students who wish to participate in a co-op or internship program must apply for a work permit as well as a study permit. Work In Canada After Graduation The post-graduation work permit program is designed to provide graduating students with Canadian work experience. Students are eligible for a work permit for a period of time equal to the length of the program. If the program of study is equal or greater than two years, graduating students are eligible to apply for a three year post-graduate work permit. LIVE Free Manitoba Basic Health Care Coverage: If you are an international student who has a valid study permit issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) for a minimum of six months and also live in the province of Manitoba for a minimum of six months in a calendar year, you are eligible to receive a Manitoba Health card. Additional health care insurance purchased through The University of Winnipeg will be required for extended health care coverage specific to international students. For more information: manitoba.ca/health The Manitoba Tuition Fee Income Tax Rebate: By providing post-secondary graduates up to a 60% income tax rebate on their eligible tuition fees, the Tuition Fee Income Tax Rebate helps recent graduates like you pay for your education while living and working here in Manitoba. Living on Campus McFeetors Hall: Great West Life Student Residence McFeetors Hall offers modern, air-conditioned dorm-style units with private washroom and access to common entertainment/ lounge areas, study areas, and laundry facilities. Available room options include single and double furnished dorms. Prices start at $913 per month, or $3652 per term (Mandatory Meal plan included in listed cost). Lion s Manor Close to campus, Lion s Manor offers a cafeteria, student lounges, and on-floor laundry facilities. Choose from our furnished dorm rooms, furnished bachelor (studio) and 1-bedroom apartments, or our unfurnished bachelor (studio) and 1-bedroom apartments. Prices start at $452 per month, or $1808 per 4-month term. Balmoral Houses Balmoral houses appeal to people who enjoy a familylike environment. Each house has between four and eleven single, furnished rooms with tasteful amenities. Shared kitchen, bathroom, and laundry facilities are available on-site. Pricing for Balmoral House Rooms starts at $437 per month or $1748 per term. Homestay is a great way to share in lively and friendly discussions in English, learn about Canadian home life and culture, and improve your level of conversational English. Students have the choice of homestay or residence. Homestay Fee $675 Includes airport pick-up, private bedroom, shared bathroom, and food (monthly rate quoted*). Total $875 Total for first month fees. Months following will be $675. After 90 days, fee will be reduced to $650 per month. At first, I couldn t speak English at all, but I have a nice homestay family and they have helped me to improve my English skills Ayaka - Japan * Students in the 14-week program are placed for 90 days. $200 placement fee is charged only once, at point of application. Scholarships and Paying for University International Student Entrance Scholarship These scholarships will be awarded to international high-school students studying outside of Canada. Recipients must have a minimum admission average of A or equivalent. No application required. Students must apply for admission to the University by March 1 in order to be considered. Value: $5,000 Number: 2 Level: Undergraduate Special Entrance Scholarships These scholarships are given to international high-school students studying at a Canadian high-school or students studying abroad in a school with Canadian curriculum. To be considered, students must have a minimum 80% final grade 12 admission average. No application required. Students must apply for admission to the University by March 1 in order to be considered. Value: $800-$2,250 Number: Unlimited Level: Undergraduate After completing one year (two terms) at The University of Winnipeg, international students can apply for a wide range of undergraduate awards and scholarships for continuing students. How to Apply Take the next step in applying to one of Canada s best undergraduate universities! Begin your studies in September, January, or May. Application deadlines are generally three months before the start of classes to enable you time to obtain a Study Permit and other necessary documents.
